Guys
Where is the chassis number on a 2a?
I thought it was behind the rear left spring hanger but I can't find it..I'm concerned I have painted chassis and covered it up which will be annoying when going to blue slip

Should be on the chassis above the rear spring hanger on the left side Lou. Methinks you may have painted over it.;)

er, buff it with a flapper/sanding disc...you don't want to grind the number away altogether

On chassis with significant surface rusting you frequently only get parts of numbers but enough to reveal the entire number, helpful if you also have the ID plate on the firewall.
In your case DB the paint makes it a little more awkward, first look at a narrow angle to see if you can see impressions of the numbers then wire brush first then file in that area.

What about rubbing the area with emery cloth until the numbers are exposed?
The numbers themselves can be chased with an engraving tool to clean the paint out if needed and deepen the impression,

Hi,
It is normally on the right front leaf hanger (the triangle shaped part) where the bushing is located. At least there is mine

The right front spring hanger is only true of Land Rovers assembled in the U.K. Australian assembled (series) Land Rovers after the series 1 have their chassis numbers on the left hand rear spring shackle chassis bracket and my South African assembled SIIB has it's chassis number on the LEFT front spring hanger.
