Newbie question.
I would like to put some sunraiser style rims on my 2A. What size would I go for to make a swop from standard rims.
Also the Gal brightwork all aroung the Landy is old and tarnished, has anybody got a good remady to perk them up.
Regards

I've just bought a Series IIA with Sunraysia style rims on but I don't pick it up until Thursday morning so it'll be a few days till I can tell you what's fitted. Maybe someone else will have been along to help you before then.

Scotch Brite (the green scruber things) and water brings the Gal bits up nicely.

Hi Ron.
The tyres on the S2A I bought the other day are 31/10.5x15" but I haven't managed to get home in daylight to see if I can see the actual rim dimensions. At the moment I'm assuming they're 15x7 rims but they may well be 15x8. I'll let you know when I get a look in daylight in the weekend, as under torchlight I have not found the wheel sizes stamped on the rim outsides. I suspect I'll have to take a wheel off and check the inside.
I do know that the bonnet spare is a 7.50x16" and it looks like the wheel will be a 16x7. I'll try and confirm that for you too. The circumference and rolling diameter of the two different tyres are basically the same so no real issue with either sized tyre.
Cheers

Series wheels are as follows; SWB 5"x16"
                                          LWB 5 1/2"x16"
7.50x16 tyre have a nominal diameter of 32" depending on the manufacturer, 31/10.5x15" have a nominal diameter of 30" so do not mix them on your car! A series landy will steer and drive much better on the 7.50x16 tyres and the steering is much lighter.
Series 11 & 11A FC have 6x16" wheels with a greater offset than normal, Same as the S111 one ton. English LWB rims have a greater offset too.
Discovery steel wheels are 7x16"

Be aware that there are many different sunrayser style rims with different offsets. I bought a 2A 88 with 3 different rim offsets (tossed them) and they differed by 30mm or so.

Discovery steel wheels are 7x16"Just to clarify:
Forward control rims are 6 1/2" and there are only SIIa and SIIb forward controls no Series II.

There is also a 4 1/2" rim on the 1948 model Land Rover and are identified by the lack of markings on the outside and also the different position of the valve stem.
The different offset sunraysia rims are usually the Range Rover and the Series Land Rover offsets - there are also differing width sunraysia rims.

thanks for this post Diana I reckon this might help me to identify some of the many series rims I have

if any of your rims have ANR1534 stamped on them they'll be the 127/130 rims
that's the only one i know as i bought a set to put on my 88"

I haven't updated the digramme lately as there are two variants of 130 rim. The early type used on the 120/127/130 is displayed however there is a later type with a positive offset. Then there is the Wolf rims and the tubeless rims.
The Defender rims are easily identified by the D> makers mark and the fact that the 6.5" rims have a broad flat about 2.5" wide, where the series FC rims have a broad flat that is 3" wide.
Once I have confirmed the rims against the numbers I will modify the diagramme.

I did some measurements this weekend on one of my Series 2A 15" Sunraysia rims and the 16" Land Rover wheel mounted on the bonnet as a spare. Plenty of photo's to explain how I did this and wrapping up with a question as to how to determine the actual offset. There's also a bit of a question about the contradiction I have on the rim numbering when looking at Diana's post.
I started with the Sunraysia rim. I used the tape measure only to get a straight edge between the bead protector edges across the wheel. The rule then measures the distance between the wheel at the stud holes and the tape.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1016.jpg
So the front, or outside, of the Sunraysia rim measured at 98mm.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1017.jpg
Same done on the back, or inside of the rim ...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1018.jpg
... produced a measurement of 122mm.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1019.jpg
Now, my understanding of "rim offset" is that it is a measurement of the distance away from the centre of the rim from the mounting flange of the rim. So the width of the rim in this case is 98+122=220mm and therefore the centre is 220/2=110mm. The offset is therefore 110-98=12mm.
Now, onto the Landy rim.
Same process for the measurements reveal 27mm for the outside ...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1020.jpg
... and 129mm for the inside.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1021.jpg
Same calculations then to determine the offset at 51mm. I'm picking that my measurements of the Landy rim might be out a bit due to the thickness of the rim flange and the "upturned edge" at the perimeter of the stud holes. if I don't assume this then I end up with a rim just over 6" wide whereas I'm pretty sure it should be either a 5.5" or 6.5" rim on a Landy. So if I allow a few extra mm for the flange thickness and the upturned edge I can stretch my imagination to say it's a 6.5" rim.
This is where things get a little interesting though. I made that assumption to suit Diana's information earlier in this thread. The problem is that the number stamped on the rim is quite different to the numbers in Diana's list for anything but a 5" SWB.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1022.jpg
Maybe this is because the rim is Australian made:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/01/1023.jpg
So now I'm not really sure about what offset I'm supposed to have if I'm to revert back to standard Land Rover sized rims. Anyone care to comment on my process and findings?
Any Perth-ites with a Series 2 or 3 Landy want to do some playing and measuring of their wheels? If nothing else, I'd love to know how a 109" drives with standard sized wheels.
Cheers
