I think it would be interesting to see where your motoring adventures started out - so what was your first car?
Was it a Landy or did you not get your hands on a Land Rover until later in life?
My first car - a used '94 Mitsubishi Magna. Sarcastically referred to as 'Prestige'...If you think a Landy leaks oil, you've never driven a Magna :p
I was a student and had little money, don't judge me :)

An LJ Torana, 1300cc, manual. Cost me $1300, ran for a week and the engine blew. Dad came to the rescue with another $1300 loan for the repairs. After that the only real issue was the gear stick literally coming up, out of the box when selecting reverse. Reverse required a pull up but the allow screw cap that held the stick in was had it.
I hated that car.

1979 HZ Kingswood sedan. It was a sky coloured light blue with a white roof. It was big and roomy with a front bench seat which had the folding arm rest in the middle (gosh I loved that) and that horrible vinyl covering which was horrible in the summer.
Most importantly the boot could fit a few eskies and a double swag.

A 1968 Mazda 1200 4 door sedan ... $500 + replace head gasket. It was built like a tank!
That car took me everywhere (yes, offroad as well), I drove it like I stole it, ran it on Shell A numerous times, treated it with contempt, and it just kept going & going & going ... I think it served me well for about 5 years before I finally killed it (another head gasket! :) )
... I even managed to wear out a brand new set of radials in 4000 miles! ... with rotation!
God I loved that car!

third hand '91 Corolla sedan known as the rock'n'rolla because of its orsum tape deck that could make the number plates rattle after I loosened the screws. It was given to me by my gf-at-the-time's parents so I they didn't have to drive their daughter around. It easily outlasted the relationship.
Ended up giving it to someone on the forum for what I paid for it once I had bought my two Landies.

Well it was Dad's but the first one I drove regularly was a XB Falcon Ute. I LOVED that thing.
Then dad figured (the opposite of how your thinking would be today I'd reckon) that with my newly acquired licence I;d be wanting to drive all my mates around.
He sold the XB (I still miss it) and bought a Datsun 180B Aaaaarrrrggghhhh. In baby poo yellow and everything.
I mean I coukd fit a lot fo beer in the boot, but the XB had that covered hands down... and you could sleep in it after the beer was drunk !
The first car I owned was actually a motorbike.
Then an EB Falcon (nothing special).
Then a 110 Defender Ute
Then a Range Rover Vogue LSE

My first car was a Triumph Dolomite Sprint with a 2 litre and twin 45 webbers. It had 4.1 gears and lsd with a mild cam and the 4spd overdrive gearbox.God that was fun to drive :D I use to club race it and then drive it to work the next day.The paint was crap on it with primer on parts of the car but it just added to the character. The best thing was beating the 5.0 holdens. They couldnt believe they were beaten by a 4 cylinder. It was quick for a naturally aspirated 4.I took it to Calder once for a club meet down the quarter mile and it did a 14.9.
I ended up selling the motor and gearbox and doing a rover V8 conversion in to it.I never finished it and then sold it to my brother. It now has a 4.0 litre Rover injected motor in it.And boy does that thing go:twisted:

First car was at age 16, a 1965 Beetle. More rust than metal in the body. Had my licence for 18 odd years and owned over 50 cars and bikes in that time (used to be able to name them all) everything from a Mini Moke to a Landcruiser Troopie to a Peugeot convertible, now my series 3 landy.
When I first went for my learners I knocked back a landy because it was too big.

First car was a Subaru Brumby. Bought it with about 30 000km on the clock and sold it with well over 200 000km. The only vehicle I have ever owned that didn't need to be towed at some stage. Ultra reliable even though it copped an absolute hiding (7200 rpm...).

My first car was a Rover 90, the style with the rear hinged rear doors.Walnut dashboard and leather upholstery and a Laycock de Normanville[ I think] overdrive that worked on all forward gears. When the engine wasn't running you could press a button on the dash and read the oil level in the sump via the fuel gauge. Very clever.Cost me $80 at the time and very little expense in repairs/ maintainence.Sold it to my brother when I bought an MGA 1500.Then I fell for series 2 LWB Landrovers and the rot set in.Still driving a 130 extra cab from 2000.Pretty good truck.Cheers, 130man.

My first car was a ****box Holden Camira JB model and in a auto  Maybe a bad thing to admit but I got it given to me (wouldn't have bought one) by the old man. Used more oil than fuel but got me from A to B and on impoverish apprentice wages was good enough. Even after the head gasket went I couldn't give it away (rang the wreckers and said you could have it and they said 'no thanks, we have enough of those POS here already' and laughed :D:D) so I drove it to the tip and it died a horrible death, bloody awful vehicle and a insult to cars in general
Had Rangies and a Discovery ever since, in order-

76 Rangie 2 door- 'Sahara'
90 Rangie Vogue SE 3.9- The 'Vog'
88 Rangie 5 speed manual- The 'Dunga'

75 Rangie 2 door (sold on minus engine and gearbox)

I may be wrong on the year but I think it was a 1952 Ford Anglia tourer, I was 14 at the time. My old man and I overhauled the engine, the old bearing scrapers and blue, side valves ect and I part traded it at 17 for a Falcon XK when I got my licence. Withwhat I have spent on cars since I could own a small country I think, but its been fun.

My vehicle ownership has been pretty varied, although I have over the years stuck with one or two brands, but I still firmly believe that one has to sample the lot before a balanced decision can be made.
During my army years I grew to love the capabilities of the little Land Rovers in use (S2s and S2as) and having been involved in early comparator trials I found that there simply was nothing that went near them in their early years.
But I started off my car ownership career buying my first car before I had a licence and learnt to drive in the ample paddocks around Adelong in NSW. in an old
1) Chev National Ute (It cost me 5 quid)
2) '39 Vauxhall GL/GY sedan. (Had a bedford 6 cyl motor and chev/body- first real road drivable car I owned)
3) 56 Morris Isis (Took me from Melbourne to Townsville a couple of times over the years in my army years - gave it to a mate for 10 quid when I was posted O/S)

4) 64 Falcon XM sedan (Just home from Vietnam and paid cash for it)

and that brings me to now:
17) Ford Ranger crew cab diesel 4x4 ute
There are a few other Land Rovers that I have collected on the way at various times but the cars listed have been my daily drivers over the years.

FJ holden ute, paid $50, eventually had joey box, F100 diff with dual wheels and if I remember right the tyres were from a Ford Galaxie.never registered, used as a shooting wagon and mercifully blown to smithereens in Mad Max 2.
first registered car was a new VG Valiant manual with the "hot" 185hp engine, later added charger E38 cam and head, holly 500, and perfromance exhaust system, destroyed everything in its day bar the phase 111 falcons. it was unoficially clocked at 138mph

like stevo,
i thought the question was
'what was your first car':o
presuming that the question meant first drivable, owned and driven legally,:p
my first was a 1949 , empire maroon vanguard
which was a wonderful pommy creation which was capable of 100 mph and also able to rough it over terrain that would make many land rover owners proud of having traversed [probably had more ground clearance than the first landy], 4 cylinder,[128 cubic inches - i think, just a bit smaller than a holden grey motor, the ferguson tractor engine and many triumph sports cars] 16 inch wheels, 4 door, right hand gearshift.
capable of causing the police to take notice on the odd occasion,
and the only make of car to ever overtake my dad in his 21/2 riley.

so the question is how many people here can truly say they have never owned anything but a LR ;)
I learned to drive in mums 1993 S1 Disco V8 Rossignol, and that fuelled the everlasting love of Landys...that was a consideration when I bought my D1 300TDi.
Like someone mentioned earlier, having experiences with different brands, etc is great, as it gives perspective. You were just lucky to pick the right stuff from the onset! :p My mates and a lot of other people in the industry treat me as a BMW expert, which is fair considering I've owned a few, did my apprenticeship n time with tools on them, plus have moved into various positions for the company. That doesn't mean I'd break my neck to have another one though (unless it's an E12...shameless plug for another one btw!).
Eventually I'll sell the Jeep and get a Defender, and keep the driveway exclusively for Landys...but that won't be happening for a while! Hehe!

Hehe!
a mate of mine has 3 2002's 2 of them are TII's...and he bought an old 520 for $1....he loves them...really wants an early m3 4cyl to drop in his standard 2002 :D

1971 Haflinger with a BMW bike 1000cc engine in it. Horsepower increased from 27 to 75 & top speed from 47 to 70mph. Couldn't quite figure what to do about the brakes though. It was awsome in the sand with all the power & with 185 x 13 tyres deflated to 10psi.

I purchased a share in a "Ford Popular" with three mates, cost us 3 pounds each and I think we were about 14 years old at the time. We bought it off the local vicar, got a mates dad to drive it into their farm paddock, where we thrashed the pants off it and wrecked it :D We then made a timber creation on it and it looked like something from a Mad Max movie. Looking back it was a bit of a shame as it was the vicar's pride and joy

Argh the good old seventies! Those were the days...
My first car, at age fifteen, when I got my license was a '55' Chevy, I must admit while I loved the old girl I never got it going so spent most nights just sitting in it listening to the radio, that was followed by a 47 Chevy Fleetmaster which was driveable after tracked down and fitted a Blueflame 6 cylinder in it. Then I turned to the dark side and started building and collecting old Fords.
My favourite at the tender age of 18 was another car I built up from a wreck a 1958 Ford Custom 300 4 door sedan (In NZ they were called a Goldflash because of the gold coloured trim on the rear mudguards). I brought it with no engine, no brakes, no gearbox and no seats. I fitted a Y block 272 cui V8 with a rear factory interceptor 312 four barrel inlet manifold and a 650 cfm Holly along with headers that turned into lake pipes. It was jacked up back and front a whole heap, that much so that it would make a D1 with a 2" lift and 33's look like a low rider, you could crawl under the car from back to front without touching anything underneath apart from the diff housing. Speaking of that I had the standard 9" diff housing chromed and made at work a set of 4"x2" box section wheely bars which I also had chromed . I also fitted a 4 speed Top Loader gearbox to it and a tiny 12", from memory, racing steering wheel which meant that it was nearly impossible to steer at anything under 20 mph as it also had 8" mags back and front with 10" low profile T/A radials fitted to the front and much taller T/A's fitted on the rear. As per normal in those days it was painted undercoat grey.
The only thing it was missing was a set of fluffy dice and then it would have looked really cool cruising down Queen St in Auckland on a friday night. ;)
It all went down hill from there when I brought a baby blue Morris 1100... :(
cheers,
Terry

Which variant of the 520? I had the pre-TU model, with the old-school everything (was the first 150 in Australia/Asia), and was a genuine import. It even had the M10 engine and chassis unmolested.
I'm interested in obtaining another E12, and would like to hear about any leads, but being raped ain't part of the program...they're worth nada on the market...it's purely an enthusiasts scene atm. ;) Let me know if the E12 is dispendable, or else I keep looking for an S1/S2 Landy. :p

Learned to drive when I was 9 years old, in Mum's EH Holden S/Wagon.
First car I owned was a XR Ford Falcon wagon that had seen better days long before I bought it. Naturally I wasted money on fixing it... and re-painting it the same "Loden Green" as the EH...
Second car was a '67 Toyota Crown, 2.3 litre 6 cylinder manual with o/drive, with a fully re-con'd engine, as honest country dealers used to do back then.
Took me over the (unsealed) Nullabor in grand style, through SA, NSW to Queensland, then back down to VIC and back home. Kept it for several years and it *never* broke down. Introduced me to the value of full CHASSIS...
Averaged better than 26 mpg overall, which included racing an XY Falcon across the Nullabor in South Oz. I won the dirt, he won the rest...
Biggest mistake was to trade it in on a HX/HZ Holden 4.2 litre V-8. Total piece of ..... It took me across to Victoria in sheer agony...whoever designed the seats and control positioning has a weird shape.
The front seats were worse than anything Land Rover could possibly produce and in a year I'd traded it . Insulted me with 14 to 17 mpg, even with a Holley 350.
#4 the VW Passat. - But the seats were comfortable, it held the road like nothing on earth, shook itself to pieces on the Nullabor, and the engine survived 110 to 150km/h which I had to do to keep the temp gauge needle in sight, never mind going past the 'red'! - Well, it WAS over 50 degrees that day...
Did an engine re-con after I got back, the first an only time I've done the full-house re-build. That engine had done over 400,000 km when I sold it. Averaged around 33 mpg.
#5 CM Chrylser Valiant 4.0 litre 'Lean Burn' System. Did a great job of burning up petrol, though in fairness, a bit better than the Holden. Great in a straight line, lethal on the bendy bits, but it was nice to drive in summer with an air-con capable of freezing Lucifer's Lounge-room. Was fantastic driving to SA, reading speed limit signs in MPH, bitumen literally melting ... and we froze.
About 17 to 21 mpg.
#6 Is a boring Jap import sedan, Mazda Capella (626) on 100% LPG. It simply goes with no fuss or drama. But does is silently and reliably...Wife's car. A "Keeper" which still does 24 to 25 mpg on LPG.
#7 Mazda 'Bongo' van, 4WD diesel import. Brilliant but another half litre would have made it perfect. Practised my Bio-diesel recipes on this poor unfortunate... Nevertheless, only the (locally fitted) immobiliser ever let me down. - On a railway crossing....
#8 the Pajero, 1989 diesel, 2.5 Turbo. Had a hard life before I got it, previous owner had an interesting cam installed,,,, went Very Quick ! (for a diesel...) Another keeper, especially after having the engine totally re-con'd, including the Injection Pump. Got adequate legroom front AND rear... Better than most newer and bigger 4WD's.
Just keeps on giving 24 to 26 mpg...
#9 was the late model Toyota Crown. Literally destined for the crusher, I took pity on it in the wrecker's yard... and it was mine for nix. :-)
Despite being long past its use-by date, it drove the best of ANY vehicle before or since... and EVERYTHING worked, except the rear air-conditioner. Best rear seat legroom of all, and all doors opened almost ar right-angles... Even the back seat was electrically operated, and could be over-ridden from the front.
Eldest son lusted after it...and after 6 months he kidnapped it, and kept it for the last 12 months of its life...
#10 is Insanity... The 94 Range Rover Vogue SE (now with working EAS)
In my defense, it only had 140K (original) on it, and it drove Very Nicely...
I console myself with the hope that this is THE best 4WD off-road vehicle in the world... because its proving to be unreliable ON the road, and even parked in my car-port which it refuses to mark as its personal territory.......
- Was'nt there a factory re-call of Landies that did'nt leak large amounts of oil ?
This latest has the potential for the most fun off-road.. but the Crowns and Mazdas have proven the more reliable...
James from Perth.

My first car was a 1953 FJ Ute, bought it from Belmont wreckers for $25, but my first legal car (ie) registered and I had a licence:D
1963 EH Holden Hydra-matic Sedan with the 149, payed $50 for it off a mates father who was selling it to Belmont wreckers, I asked if I could buy it and he said yes, it was in immaculate condition, well until I wrote it off:(
I got into bike after that, so cars took a backseat once I got my licence, I still had the odd car here and there, but bikes were and still are my passion, it all started with a mates Honda SL100, learning to ride on this when I was 13(same time I had the FJ Ute;)

1960something Hillman Hunter. Bought it for $500 bucks off some elderly people my mum knew, paid it off with my Austudy every fortnight!
Painted the Red Hot Chili Peppers logo (asterisk) on the roof - then of course denied all knowledge of the artwork's origin when I sold it later on. :p Added a 2x100w power amp, massive graphic EQ with night rider LED scanning (awesome!) and converted the rear footwells into speaker enclosures (passengers had to sit cross legged on the rear seat). Added a plastic fern on rear shelf (named Kevin i think).
The car ran on nothing.. $5 would last me weeks! (bought a lot more fuel then too!). The poor old girl died through neglect (and ignorance). There was an unlabeled orange light on the dash that kept coming on. Turns out that was the oil pressure warning. (I swear.. you think THAT would be labeled!) So i melted the big-ends and got towed home! Replaced the engine and sold for $300. Great 1st car!! :-)

Wooooow that was high tech back then!! Went like a proverbial shower and made 270hp at the rear wheels but got 50L/100km driving it like a granny, ate tyres diffs and gearboxes until guts from a Starion went in but it always got me home. Died at least 6 times in my driveway 2 of those seized after it cooled. Sad day when I stripped it for parts. Man that car went hard.....

First car was a 1981 2 Door rangie with nicely worked 3.5 V8
Was so much fun to rev it out till people winced coz they thought it would blow, then punch another 1500rpm and laugh.....
Something about the old two door rangies, Spen King and the rover gurus at the time got so much right so early on. So many later vehicles really owe their success to the early design teams of the range rover. Have to say, set up right a two door will out handle all the modern stuff too. Spose every time they get heavier its harder for them to go fast round bends. Took some technique behind the wheel....Of course dont chicken out mid corner unless your prepared for some lift off oversteer :)
Loved it, fantasize about having another, thought at one point id never own a diesel, but afraid the practicalities of a 300tdi 110 have finally converted me......for now.

I started with a 1971 KE20 Corolla, a cast-off because it had extensive rust and needed a new body. I brought it back to life and used it like a Land Rover until I eventually got one. I did heaps to that car, including beefing up the rear springs to the point where it almost became the world's only 1-ton Corolla! Then it, too, rusted out. Crossing flooded creeks in it probably didn't help.
There are times I miss it, usually as the fuel guage approaches E, but the actual cost of a fill is the same - 45L. But I couldn't really go back. I sold the Corolla to a fellow who pulled out the motor and 5 speed for a Suzuki, which I
think is still going now, nine years on.
Along the way there have also been abortive attempts to rebuild an FC Holden ute, and another (66 model if I recall) swb 2a.

Having read a few previous posts about 71Corolla's, HT Holdens and so on makes me realise that I'm getting on in years.
My first car was a 1927 Baby Austin 7, very small and basic. 2 wheel brakes and very direct steering (1.7 turns lock to lock) which made for interesting driving, especially as the wheel base was identical to the steel tram lines in Perth at the time.
Since then (1957) I've lost count of what I've owned, but at least 25, including a number of england's finest; Series 2, Series 2A, 2x Series 3, 2x RR Classics and a D2.
At my age I expect that the D2 and my current Ser3 will see me out(financially at least).

My first was a Holden FJ ute. I have lost count how many cars I have had but some notables are;
Mini Cooper S
Valiant Charger
Falcon XB GT coupe.(I wish I still had it) I sold this to get a deposit on a house. It would probably now be worth more than a house.
My foray into 4X4 started with an FJ 40 Landcruiser. When the kids arrived I needed something with rear seats. I had always liked RR but at the time were unaffordable. I spent about two years without a 4x4 when a cheap 83 4 door came my way. Had this for about 11 years and then got my current Disco.

1959 Toyota landcruiser tray
Then lots of volvo's and small BMC cars. I still see my cruiser and volvo. Both in Geelong rotting away. Poor old 164 manual.
Nicest car I've owned!!!! In my eyes the Saab GM900 convertible. It was a pleasure to drive. Toughest. 1977 thunderbird. It's waiting on it's new bigblock to be built
