thought I would get this thread started after the other day I done a few things to my 2010 puma and while I was at it I wondered what others have done so far or thought about doing???
I cleaned the air filter out and im certain that it went a tad better once I done it so now I'm looking at other things such as straight of the bottom of the turbo there is a polution box (cat converter you could say) I am considering replacing it with a 3" straight through piece straight of the bottom of the turbo... Also thinking about freeing up the terribly small and restrictive looking intake line from air box to snorkel with a larger diameter pipe... And then look into chip or tune and intercooler upgrade and then see what the puma can do :)

There are a few mods available re chipping etc, Tombie2 (TRT) / B.A.S. are the best starting points to find out more.

Don't go too overboard, you don't want broken drivetain components etc, diffs and trans etc aren't too strong if you want to start ramming 450 to 500Nm through them:o

Roughly how much for a chip you reckon ? Is there chips like how the td5's had different levels of power output ? (i heard someone say there once was a chip made for the td5 that was 250kw is this true?)
Speaking of drivetrain strength in the 6speed is 6th gear the weakest like how 5th gear on the R380 is the weakest or is 5th and 6th both weak?
Wish the pumas had sailsburys still :(

I would hazard a guess at yes as they recommend you dont tow in 6th

Hey C.h.i.e.f,

I have removed the original factory ducting from the air intake / snorkel and replaced it with Pirtek 3" marine exhaust tube (Flexible high heat rubber tubing with an internal wire spring, to stop collapse and maintain internal diameter from suction and bending). Use the original PUMA connector to air box and use Sika-Flex to glue it all together

Two benefits -

1/ Now 100% water tight between air box and top of snorkel (Original PUMA ducting is only slip together and is NOT air/water tight).

2/ Now non restrictive air flow between snorkel and air box ( Original PUMA ducting has sharp angles, different shapes and in some places is down to about 20mm. Not an expert, but this has to restrict ability for smooth consistent air flow to be obtained)

Performance is improved at higher revs and the loud suction noise has been reduced.
Cheers

That sounds like a good idea ! Im pretty curious about this exhaust also

My Mate a couple of doors up has got 2008 Ford Transit tray back, (Same motor and gear box as the Puma).

He is roof tiler and the Transit has clocked up 165,000K's already.

The Transit hauls well over 1.5t of tiles and other gear in the tray every day and regularly tows a bogie trailer full of waste tiles etc, weighing over 2.5t.

He burns up and down the F-3 in 6th every day - no prob's.

Not going to get involved with the debate about the diff's, but you can count on the motor and box to do the hard yards without a prob :D.

Yeah im not to worried about the engine and box more about the diff which is already stuffed :(

Done a trip the other day in the puma and done a fuel consumption test and came out with a figure that does not seem correct since it was sitting on the speed limiter for long periods but came out with a figure of 8.7L per 100klm 61L/531klm's?

i come up with 11.5L/100km

assuming my maths is correct that is

250kw.....Lol No!!

I either get 11.5L or 8.7L by my maths depending on what way I divide the 2 figures! Either way its good economy compared to other 4x4's of the same size :)

c.h.i.e.f,
You are going 8.7Km on each Ltr
You will use 11.5Ltr to go 100Km.

I am getting similar figures. At best 10.5 at legal speed limits on highway.

Yeah thought that might have been a fib ! I have been told by a good source that when he chipped, upgraded intercoolers, different exhaust and some other things that he does and plant the foot all 4 wheels would break traction on tar:o

CHIEF,

Check out the British website intercooler fabrication specialists (http://www.allisport.com/) if your interested in performance on Pumas and Td5's for that matter.

These guys have to lower their defenders to keep them on the track and they've been featured in magazines like LRW, LRO and LR Monthly. They do mapping to remove the limiter and boost power to insane levels. It started with replacement inter-coolers and it has grown to a massive business in the UK. Drop them an e-mail and they'll give you all the info regarding chips, airflow and the rest.

Being the UK they obviously have unlimited access to replacement and after market mechanical bits to replace those that will give under the new strains!

You can probably tow all right in top gear in a Puma just as my 03 Defender 130 ute Td5 tows heavy loads easily in 5th. Until you get to about 140,000 kms and find the gearbox bearings have worn out and all need to be replaced. One thing that LR don't tell you. Yes the vehicle can tow and carry the most in its class. But not for very long.

Yeah my mate also mentioned its great power but he is forever replacing gearboxes mainly due to pulling heavy loads with no effort in 5th gear eventually flogs it out :o

he was refering to the td5's sorry! My puma is far from that but he wants to dyno it before we do the mods to it and then after it :)

Sorry to sound negative but you can't blame a vehicle for breaking when it's abused, there isn't to my knowledge any vehicle that can do prolonged towing in top gear without damage.5th gear is called overdrive for relaxed cruising and better economy, sixth if it's a Puma and it's there for that reason and that reason only. Hello i have a 2008 130 2.4 we have a slide on camper it get along great on the Hwy but the hills forget it, Am looking at putting a Power chip in they say 30% more performance and Torque and better Throttle Response just after a bit more power with the camper on. What are people Thoughts on this, As i had a V8 ute with lots of power
Thanks Chris

I would not be using any "generic" chip.
A "specific" remap of your ECU is the way to go by someone like B.A.S. or Alive,...heaps of stuff on here about this stuff.

NON issue. R380 the fith gear was sitting outside the box, lack of oil was the issue. Not so with the new box. all clusters are inside.
