View Full Version : Missing Gearbox Mount?

Was crawling around underneath the truck this morning checking driveline slack and noticed this.

Now cut my legs off and call me Shorty but to me this looks like there should be a bush supporting the gearbox in the gap. Hole in the bracket lines up with the thread in the box..the only thing missing is what I would expect to be a rubber bush and a bolt to bring it all together. Or is this just another Defender "quirk"?

Ive found out something about it...

ITs an aux mount for when you change the gearbox mounts...

slide a bolt into it, drop on a washer wind on a nut, screw it up into the box then wind the nut down the bolt and it holds the gearbox in place while you change the mounts.

Looks like you finally crawled under the Puma for a good look ;)

Now can you explain why it is so clean under there?

How is the friggin rain, will it ever stop?

I recon that mount is for when the ZF option comes in with the update model;)

yeah cause theres something that belongs in a deefer.... an auto..

Im stunned enough to learn one of two things from this.

1. Ford thought far enough ahead and decided to make something thats a routine repair easy for the owner

OR

2. Ford had no faith in their workmanship on the Tcase or the mounts so made it easy for the mechanics to do warranty work.

Got that right!!!! We were going to Glasshouse to put the D through its paces but a waste and dangerous in this weather. Looks like it has set in for the long haul unfortunately.

I am afraid I find it difficult to believe that Land Rover would spend several dollars per vehicle to cast a mount into the gearbox, set up a drill press to drill and thread the mount and fabricate a mount on the crossmember for the convenience of warranty or mechanic work.( especially since the threding of the gearbox mount would not be necessary for that purpose)

AFAIK they or any other car maker would not spend money for that purpose.

I believe (based on 20 years in the industry) that they designed the mount to be used but for some reason decided not to use it, most probably NVH. ( or maybe it had unforseen effects on some other component found only in late testing)

Someone out of warranty fit a suitable mount there and see what it does.

the mount point is in the gearbox because its there in the casing to start with the 6 speed box is not a landy only box.

the additional bit thats in the cross member I suspect was originally put in to mount the box as it would be in the transit van BUT... its not up to having the dynamic weight of the Tcase hanging from the box imposed upon it. what pooches me is why its still there after 2 years of production

Spoke to the dealer out of interrest. they noticed it on the first Puma they got and quiried it with LR

"Land Rover has come back to us only stating that there is no bush for this mount. It also shows nothing on the parts schematic."
