130 REAR END QUEARY

Happy new year all

just recieved an interesting phone call from a mate on posting to ACT from Darwin, All Ova on the forum.
Called me from Kings Canyon asking about the oil leaking from the rear axle of his 130. He has recently gone for the Maxi Drive axel/cap upgrade to his 130, now I have the same on mine but it came with and have had no need to pull apart so have no idea about the oiul leak.
I take it that the diff oil lubricates the wheel bearings and that the silicone seal he has lost is the problem? Now how serious is this given he is where he is? can he top up and limp it along, also he has fitted an airlocker to the rear - any special diff oil requirments ie LSD etc?

There are quite a few places oil can leak on the rear axle, is it a Sals? what year is the 130? If it is leaking from a crack in the housing etc he is quite possibly in serious trouble, but a hub seal onto brake disc, or a pinion seal leak he can top up and get out of there, providing the leaks arent caused by failed wheel bearings, or a failed pinion bearing.

thanks for the prompt reply, he is leaking onto the brake caliper and apparently there was selastic type material sealing the axle cap which has come off.
Said that the leak is minor but as he had all of the work done just prior to leaving darwin he was a bit worried. I have this selastic under my axle caps as well but mine has never caused any dramas. Oh and it is an 01 model 130.
I will pass your number onto him when I speak to him in the morning - never ceases to amaze me how willing to help people on this forum are.
