View Full Version : scary moment... wondering what could it be?

Hi Guys

Had a very brown pant moment on the way back from Augusta in the deefer the other day... cruising along just under 100kph.. the boat in tow 4 people on board and a shed load of stuff on board making us fairly heavy.. boat is a 6m tinny (cbin style) on a dual axle trailer probably weighing all up about 1.5t and over 3.5m height.. by the way it was a close to 40deg day

anyway the defender had seemed to be struggling a bit (i assumed as we were going into heavy winds) up the hills etc.. but we were loaded so could forgive it.. when suddenly along the new mandurah bypass... temp guage flicked up, engine lost power for a second and then all came back to normal... rapidly plugged the nanocom in and temp was showing 110deg.. slowed down to 85-90 and the temp wouldnt drop below 107... even though it felt like it was easily cruising... so we needed some fuel... so pulled in to mandurah.. where the temp came down to 100 after about 5-6k's of 60kph driving..

checked for errors and there were 3, driver demand error, turbo over boost error and a overboost has occured error. after filling up, restarting the engine and clearing the errors... the journey back at 90-95kph resulted in engine temps of around 95-98 much lower than before...

so my question is... could the errors have caused the engine to remap or do 'something' that resulted in maybe lower power requiring me to use more fuel to get the same result therefore increasing temperature?

by the way the defender chewed through the fuel on the trip.... so something isnt right... 650k's to a tank... 120L ish... although i can attribute a little of that to leakage as my breather pipe on the LR tank seems to have split... joy!

finally... watching the egr modulator % it seems that for some reason the modulator wants to pump lots of crap back into the engine as its pretty much open at 16% or 40% most of the while... which i guess will also give me some issues? including maybe heating issues over long periods...

Cooling system seems to be ok having been flushed and recoolanted in the last year..

any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Steve, sounds like you've got one o' them 'new fangled' computer operated Deefers??

well , each to his own.....mine don't have 'electronic any-thing' and I love it for that....:D

However, basically sounds to me that the vehicle was a tad 'overloaded' ??

Watching a 4WD Action vid a while back about 'towing' and the suggestion was that you 'stay out of top gear' (when towing).......whether its 5th...in my case...or probably 6th in your case ???

Reason being that 'top gear' in most vehicles is an 'overdrive' gear...designed for 'easy highway cruising'..... and NOT for towing/carrying 'heavy loads'.

with heavy loads, dropping down a gear will also help your fuel economy to a degree and put a lot less strain on the driveline.

Too, HOT weather..........heavy load.......strong headwinds....uphill........just drop down a cog or two..........??? after all you've only got a 2.5 litre donk in there pulling all that weight and it's probably 'stretching the friendship' to ask that much of it ??

"Driver demand error" 'bout says it all !! :D

ps// your fuel consumption WILL go up when heavily loaded depending on the conditions and terrain

Steve, what model year is your Puma?

I just came back from my LR stealer, and the mechanic was telling me that on pre-MY09 Pumas, one of the metal clips in the turbo setup fails to close (or was it open?) when it is very hot.

Lost of Puma owners who live in hot areas in SA have experienced this sudden loss of power on very hot days.

He checked the hose and told me I have the revised one - apparently the original version had a ceramic ring around the metal plaque. In the revised version LR removed that creamic part.

May be related to your issue?

As for the EGR, BAS in the UK has developed a remap which keeps the EGR shut at all times :)

sorry guys critical info missing... its a 2002 td5, chipped by tombie and pulls these loads normally without issue... i have never had to drop a gear pulling the boat as in reality its not a heavy tow load... 4th would be painful to tow in as 5th in the td5 is fairly low/high geared (hi revving)

as for fuel consumption... we have done a similar tow to jurien minus 2 passengers.. and returned 14l/100k's the boat also had its full canopy on then too...

i think as i have been saying a while... the egr needs to go on the disco and deefer..

now... does that change the answers :)

sorry bout that...

EGR blank off kit may be a start, cheap & easy to do,your EGR may be playing up.

+1^100

remove that p.o.s EGR, and also replace your middle silencer box with a freeflow one.

2400 km - must be a big doorstep!!!
You are closer than us Perth-dwellers.

well... doorstep of a big house maybe!

Yeah i have PM'd him to see if he is still doing them as i know he is busy with other things now... and his website seems to have gone walkabouts...

now i just have to wait a couple of weeks for the busy man to reply :D

The EGR sticking would explain it... as i get gradual heat increase.. caused by continuous cooling of exhast gas by the EGR cooler... loss of power.. high fuel usage... and then suddenly for no reason its running great again!

only issue i have now is a slipping clutch....

Joy!

There's a bloke on Ebay selling a kit with a VDO boost gague all taped and ready to go. A bit pricey at $250 (?)

I liked the bost gague as it goes 0 to 15 PSI so realy easy to read

So you run your boost too low or like your guage to sit on the stops??? Pumas, TD5s, 300Tdis and factory 4BD1Ts all run >15 psi max standard. I have a 0-30 psi boost guage.

Havent been back to the post in a few days. I thought that the TD5's ran under 15 psi boost?

I remember reading ~22psi on here. All modern diesels I am aware of run >15psi.

the cutout will come in around 19.7psi IIRC and thats gauge pressure (nanocom - atmospheric)

interestingly this weekend i towed similar load and the boat to mandurah and the temp didnt get above 95deg....

something has to be amiss... and i suspect the egr quite badly....
