View Full Version : D2 Horn buttons

My (careless) D2 has lost one of the plastic horn buttons from the steering wheel. I offended her with the application of duct tape to hold in the spring and metal plate.
I thought these must be a pop-out/push-in easily replaceable item, but I am informed that these come as part of a kit including airbag and sundry....at considerable expense. The duct tape gets to stay for the moment!
Has anyone else had this problem?

There's a US seller on Ebay with some aftermarket buttons ! About $40US/pair I think it was.
Buttons have been specially made to solve your problem. Noticed them the other day. CRA Custom Rover something maybe ?

if you can find it, its easily fixed - mine has stayed together for 2 years. Cut a piece of rubber from a thong that will slide down the centre of the spring and is 3-4 mm longer. silicone each end, attach plastic horn button, bingo. Good as a bought one.

I thought I saw in microcat the set of two buttons that came with just the wiring etc for both sides. Wasn't listed with the airbag assy. Was looking as one of the clips on my RH button has broken off and if not careful ever now and then it pops out. Don't have microcat on me at the moment sorry.

You can get the genuine part from brit-car.co.uk for about 45-50.

You bloody ripper!
I've been searching for a new right hand button, with success, but couldn't justify the expense.
I had thought of doing something similar to this and bought a pencil eraser to hack up in preparation before I'd even read this thread.
I'll be doing this on Australia day with a beer in hand. (as long as the missus doesn't drag me out shopping or anything lame like that.)
Cheers

Yet another known problem on the D2 list of problems.

Sure is Mick. I had a crack at the horn buttone this morning.
One precision cut pencil eraser and a bit of silicon was all it took to do the job. It sits and feels exactly like the button that wasn't broken. Not bad for a couple of bucks worth of materials.
Next!

I drilled a hole just above the broken bayonet fitting and inserted a tiny split pin. the split pin head locks the button in place the same as the bayonet would. Only problem if temp drops to around 0 deg horn goes off. Woke me up twice last winter at around 4.00am. I trimed a bit of the pins legs off and it hasnt happend since.

Surely wreckers will sell you a button for less than $40? My D2 buttons kept popping out when it got really hot. I used a heat gun to (very carefully) warm the legs up and splay them an extra 1 mm each. Then used a file to slightly sharpen the wee ledge on the legs and with the steering wheel nice and hot at midday, wrestle the buttons back in. No further problems for almost a year now.

One of my buttons is stuck solid. In the raised position, but can't press down.
Any good tips for safe removal without causing too much damage?
It's prob been super-glued in to stop it falling out by a previous "careful" owner!!

Cheers,
There are four retaining clips on the button. One on each corner. The clips eare on the top end edge and the bottom edge respectively. If you get a thin flat blade of some decription, you should be able to pop the button out. Careful though, they can become bittle.
Let us know how you go. It's an easy fix once it's all out.
