Can anyone identify the overdrive fitted here, purely from inspection of the knob?

It has On<->Overdrive<->Off written on the top of the knob.

Thanks, Peter

Crawl underneath and take a pic of the overdrive unit. They are very easy to ID from the casing.

Sounds like it is a Toro overdrive. I have one in the shed, looks similar in appearance to a fairey unit.

That selector looks nothing like the one my Toro had.

That selector looks nothing like the one my Toro had.But it looks exceptionally like the knob of the Fairey overdrives.

However there is no way of knowing if someone has been mixing and matching selectors or ODs.

I was going to ask how did you arrive at that conclusion but others have beaten me too it.

Can't agree more - but I did suggest that the "knob" appears exceptionally ...

the only thing i can tell for sure is that my Fairey O/D has a proper hex head drain plug, whereas that one looks to have a tapered plug

it'll probably be best if you lift the centre seatbox cover out and look in there to see if there's any writing cast in (name), if there's not then you are left with removing the O/D and looking at the clutch sleeve splines

Fairey splines are quite fine and fragile looking and are still obtainable (although expensive), Toro clutch sleeve has quite chunky teeth and parts are VERY difficult to find

It has been a while since I sold my Toro, however IRC it has a much larger sump and 3 well defined ribs. Looks like a fairey to me, though I am sure someone else can confirm.

Pretty sure my Fairey has the same on the knob.
It's too late to go crawling under the car but will check tomorrow at work.
I've got the original wooden box and manual at work.

Cheers,

Peter

And here's the picture. A minor difficulty when I found a toolbox bolted under the centre cover, but it came out easily enough.

So it turns out to be a Fairey after all.

that doesn't look like it's had the oil level checked in several millennia :o

And the same would be true for the gearbox, transfer box, diffs, and swivels.

However, I checked the engine oil and there's some in there :)
