shouldn't there be a light somewhere on the dash/steering column so you see it it disarms? THis happened to me, my immobiliser was bumped and had a loose connection. Everything you described was exactly the same.

This light is also used to override the immobiliser manually

Ok, i went out and closed the landy up and immobilised it all worked as normal but the red light on the dash is blinking alot faster than normal, where from here :(

I presume we are talking 130 Defender TD5 here? In which case I would be surprised if an immobiliser problem stopped it from cranking. It would be more likely to start and then stop.

It sounds more like a starter motor problem to me. Have a look at the cables connecting to the starter solenoid, and I would also be carefully checking engine/transmission earths.

Cheers,

Lionel

Grab a hammer ...
Crawl under the car and give the starter motor a couple of Tap's / hit's

This will jog the internal connections .... and give you 1 last start

Natt,

This might be off the wall, but my 04 130 Td5 has had a series of ignition switch issues. Its comes down to the construction of the switch unit at the back of the ignition switch/steering lock assembly. Basically at the end is a set of contacts that the key will rotate, through the LOCK, OFF, ACC, IGN and START positions. Intermittantly, the start switch would flick back to ACC, so engine would shut down...

It totally crapped out in January...pulled it apart and chucked the spring (thats the key return bit after starting), and saved $$$ from getting a new for the time being. Just have to remember to reset key to IGN to save the starter motor.

Easy to check....four phillips screws that hold the instrument panel. Then move panel out of way and look at back of switch for anything loose.

Apologies if it isn't this, but it is work checking. Starter solenoids also crap out, but you should hear a clicking noise when you try to crank.

If things remain quiet when you try to start, it likely to be 1) dead battery - enough to power dash lights but not starter (try jumping) 2) a wiggly amps issue - switches, connectors, relays, and broken wires.

Good luck

Natt,

Can you be a bit more specific about where you are there might be a an Aulroian in the vicinity that can go around to have a look.

If you have an mobile auto elec on the job we will be keen to find out what the problem was.

Cheers

Thanks again to all, ended up being a yellow relay box just above the fuses near the gear shift, i think there are 5 in that area, i did check all connections and tapped the starter
