abs, tcs lights staying on when driving
signs of oil leaking on the brake backing plates of the rear brakes.
oil leaks from transfer case, engine, transmission and diffs.
vibration from engine at idle in gear when stationary.
vibration between 90 and 115 kms hr.
vibration at 2250 rpm when free reving and while driving
universal joints in the front and rear prop shafts have been replaced with servicable ones. ie grease nipples in all unis.
cracks in rear rubber coupling where rear shaft bolts to the rear diff
inside drivers door where the hinges are isnt cracked when the door is opened as wide as it will go
chips in the windscreen
all switches inside the car work ie. windows, fuel release and so on.
check for the car leaning to the right or sagging on the drivers side.
check that the trans shifts smoothly and the torque convertor locks at about 80 km hr
check low range works.
if it has sls suspension that it works
coolant looks like coolant and not mud.
service history
and so on. Hope i didnt scare you but i would check most of these things on an car i buy.

What's with this one? Mine did it when I bought it, but seems to have stopped after I took the car on a long drive (600k day after I bought it).

Generaly this is a sign of engine and or gearbox mounts sagged. If its gone away after a long drive possibly the exhaust mounts. I say this because once the exhaust mounts get hot they soften up slightly. Also maybe the exhaust moved during the long drive.
Either way if the vibration is gone then be happy.:)

I bought a 2001 TD5 6 months ago and really luv it. This site is the best source of info I have seen anywhere. I read for weeks on what to look for before parting with the $$. A few items to look for that I have found -
warping in the exhaust manifold, apparently they all do it but it is not expensive to get fixed.
Centre diff lock - check it has the internals so you can get it activated if required.
have the oil pump bolt checked
wiring loom is very efficient at moving oil into the ECU - check this.
Service history - mine had books and also every receipt ever spent on it and showed the trans had been serviced regularly.
engine mounts do get soft - mine has one that could be replaced
oil leaks - i have been lucky and have none, or not since I dropped the sump to fix the oil pump bolt
MAF - a good clean pays dividends
EGU - use one of the blocking kits available and you will notic the difference.
chipped
I was getting terrible economy initially but when I did a few of the above it improved dramatically and is now better than my sons Hilux
still learning daily about mine and as stated, read this site and you will be much better prepared for the experience of owning one.

The easiest way to check if it is the engine mounts, is to put a jack under the sump, get someone to sit in the car and start it, then slowly jack the sump up abit. If the viabration goes with the some of the engines weight on the jack then the mounts have gone..
You can also get under the car, and the engine mounts have a hole in the centre of the base, if the rubber from the inside of the mount housing is touching or protruding the hole, then the mount is no good.

vibration between 90 and 115 kms hr.
I know this is an old thread but I'm curious what this is about? Universals? If so, which ones?
check that the trans shifts smoothly and the torque convertor locks at about 80 km hr
Is that a TD5 only thing? And how do you check that it's locked? I guess punching the gas might show it.
