Treads

So here's a poll to resolve the longest standing argument in our household
Dumb poll, I know; but I'd be interested to know how many people like each of the these.
For reference:
Vertical Ducks

I would say it depends entirely on how they are to be cooked....

I've never cooked a duck vertically, only horizontally.
So I'll vote horizontal, although I prefer the attitude of the verticals.

I always preferred Daffy ducks.

One should always "Plucka Duck" before cooking.

But if one needs a tarpaulin, this type of duck might be of interest:

Notwithstanding all the prior humorous posts :D :D,
and assuming you are referring to domestic use, it all depends whether you are wanting the birds as pets, for eggs, or for meat
the indian runners (the tall & skinny ones) are lighter and said to be good for all purposes
the rouens/mallards (green head-dress) are said to be good as meat birds
dullbird could be on the money with the pekin duck as a two-way bet
...... & now I'd better (d)uck off :)

At enrolment at Mac Uni they warn you do not approach the ducks under any circumstances as they will attack. Of course there's always one assclown or drunkard on the way back from a party who has to test the theory. Good thing theres a hospital on site now.

Mmmm duck !
Horizontal ducks are better looking.
Vertical ducks are better when stuffed and used as bowling pins.

Indian Runners make excellent pets and are amazingly helpful if you have gardens. They forage virtually non-stop for insects, snails, etc. Rouens have the greatest amount of breast meat. Some breeders reached extremes breeding Rouens for maximum meat to the point that the poor buggers were unable to walk when full grown.
Geese are good watchdogs, can be very agressive particularly when the gaggle has goslings, and are a terrific Christmas dinner. Very traditional Danish "Julemad", roast goose with braised red cabbage an caramelised potatoes.

I did an animal behaviour assignment on wood ducks once.... a long time ago in a previous life. All about agressions correlation in a mother protecting a brood of ducklings etc. I did a lot of it while drinking beer sitting in a chair beside the lake at Qld Uni - that's a civilized way to learn !

G'day Folks :)
Interesting thread this, as, just this morning we had a pair of wood ducks (Maned Geese) in our dog kennel yard this morning complete with a gaggle of 9 goslings,so for about an hour or so we shepherded them from one yard into the main yard yards have chain wire fencing, and then tried to get them all out the side gate into the paddock (dam paddock) but some of the little fella's were just too tired to do the lot in one go, so, everyone camped under the Hibiscus bushes for a while, then off out the side gate, our older border collie bitch did a very good job of working them out of the dog yard, slowly working then dropping all on command, she has never been trained to work stock, but looked disappointed when the left the house yard headed for the dam.
That video of the goose with the goslings being blown about looked like she was a Maned Goose, they roost at night high in trees, but are a ground breeder/nester.
cheers

If yopu are referring the Mac Uni in Sydney, the hospital doesn't have a casualty dept. so it might be a long wait for attention! :D
It's also expensive. My 5-day stay cost me just under $13K just for the room.

Many years ago my father was doing research on those ducks,& i think also swans at that lake at the Qld uni,& i remember they found many didn't have feet, they recon the eels were biting them off.
As for horizontal or verticle, when our Springer Spaniel is after them they go horizontal very quickly.
The best one is horizontal roasted in the oven.
