You ever wonder why companies dont want to ship to you in Australia?
I work for Lucky8 a USA Land Rover Off Road store and we have been sending parts to you guys in Australia for years with out an issue.
An Australian customer purchased a snorkel and we sent him an email stating the shipping was going to be $150 extra and asked if he wanted cancel the order.
This is the Email we received this morning.
Hey Justin,
You must honour the agreement that was made when I completed the purchase from your website. It's illegal to increase the costs at this stage of the transaction. If your organisation made a mistake, the mistake is yours.
I hope that this transaction will be pleasant from now on. It is not my intention to make it ugly. However, you must know that if you do not honour the agreed quote for the unit price and shipping and handling fees, that I will receive legal advice, and contact PayPal, 4WD forums, etc about this matter and your handling of it, until justice is served.
Sincerely,
XXXXXXX
I did not know what to say to this, and just refunded his money.

Have funds been transferred and accepted for the originally quoted price?
If not I believe (through minimal internet research and no actual legal knowledge) it just an 'invitation to treat' so you can tell him to FO.
However, if funds have been accepted (for example) by an online purchasing system you may be liable to supply. I think the acceptance of funds is the point at which the contract is formed.

i'm a pretty reasonable bloke if and you could show it was an oversight than i would pay the extra........
i'm assuming the purchase was made due to considerable saving to buying the same product here in OZ
plenty of members on here have given your company a good report

The site doesn't appear to calculate shipping to here automatically - you put the goods through the cart, checkout via paypal and then like paddocks and most other OS suppliers they email the final shipping price. At least this has been my experience. Pretty simple and efficient.
BTW the AULRO witness protection system was rather quick:angel:. Had dinner with a bloke from Sydney last night and you should've seen the performance over a closed mussel:D.

It was not an Over site. He ordered it when we were closed over the internet. No emails no phone calls. Just ordered it. When we sent the email saying hey this is a big box and is expensive to ship would you like to pay for shipping or cancel the order we got that email with all the threats.
We are a US company that dose not offer shipping to anywhere out side the US on our site.

The client says "when I completed the transaction from your website". This implies he had already paid the issued invoice - is that correct?
A little later you say "we refunded his money" again implying he had already paid.
Did the transaction state or imply that the $ were for a delivered item?
I work for a company that issues quotes to a clients. If a client accepts a quote then we stick to it even if something that we hadnt counted on occurs and if that was clearly in scope.
If the unforseen issue is clearly out of scope ie not specifically included in the job to be done then we feel comfortable asking the client for more $ for that item.
If the invoice $ included delivery and if the client had already paid then you have an ethical obligation to stand by the price you quoted him - this would be a no-brainer.
Edit: Have just read other responses you have made. If your site clearly states that the price included US delivery then you are clear - you should have said to him "Sure, we'll stick to that price. What mainland US address would you like that sent to sir?"

I just tried your site out and it does give the impression that shipping is already calculated and then it transfers you to Paypal.
However, its pretty obvious that the shipping amount is too cheap for shipping a big item to Australia.
Maybe the site should be enhanced to ask for a shipping address before it tries to calculate the shipping or complete the checkout process.

Hey - don't assume we are all the same, and we won't assume all yanks (seppos?) are the same :D ;)
I think you guys have done pretty well out of AU sales - this seems an isolated case (and the guy seems like a ***** - hope he isn't a member here).
Conversely, when I was working in Europe I called a US company to place and order, and was flatly told "we don't sell outside of the US" - then he hung up on me.

While the customer wasn't very courteous, your world-wide accessible website does seem to say there is a flat shipping rate with no intimation that it isn't a worldwide shipping rate. North Americans have a reputation for forgetting there is a world past their borders sometimes too. The door swings both ways.

i just went through the process and added an item 'snorkle' to my basket quite clearly states
Shipping Comments:Please call or email for an accurate shipping quote.
seems like a no brainer to me that i would contact them for a quote, i would have no problems paying for freight
sounds to me not only is this member being a cheep arse he also wants to screw a supplier that seems to be looking after the rest of us in aus

Unfortunately I've heard (seen ?) this happen a few times on a couple of different forums.
Everytime it's someone that knew what they were doing and were just scamming the individual (or in this case, international company)
Its left a nasty taste in a few peoples mouths of Australians.

Yeah, having looked around the site its pretty blatant that its a US site, with US shipping, and US phone numbers.
Its not as if the postage was quoted to Aus incorrectly.
Refund it and forget about it.
Interesting that the 'name and shame' apparently goes for random first names too! Bizarre!

There is no inference on the website that AUS shipping is included, there's no online storefor int shipments, there's no int shipping costs page so the only way for him to have a price is to contact Justin and get a quote.
Unfortunately, given the nature of the vendor, it's going to be a LR owner. What an assclown. Even if you've processed payment you can refund at discretion, just as they can claim a return for refund/exchange/credit. I'd be making a list for the wall with his name on the top.
I'm only sorry I didn't see it before it was edited, otherwise I'm sure some of us would be less than pleased for them making it harder for us.

Normally I would have moved on, But the " im going to post this on forums threat" Just got under my skin.I wouldn't worry too much about it.
AULRO has a No Name and Shame policy where we don't allow disgruntled customers to post their gripe with a vendor (any vendor). If the mods find one, which we do pretty quickly the post or entire thread are removed.
As Inc says there are plenty of gripe forums out there ("Not Good Enough" being one) AULRO is not the place to do it.
What I will bitch about the the US Government restricting exports of technology, particularly obsolete military technology, when numerous other countries, Greece, Israel etc are more than happy to sell us stuff they bought from you'se guys.

Do you sell 35-spline Dana 60 detroits, 4.56:1 and numerically higher? I can't find them listed on your site, but thought I would ask...

I can vouch for that scenario. I ordered some Paintball gear from The States in December and the hoops I had to jump through for a $35 item were not worth the effort. I ended up paying $80 from an Australian vendor for the convenience.

I've had bad experiences with several overseas sellers. I hasten to add I have had far more good experiences. Some of them exceptional.
I'll continue to buy from overseas (and locally, of course).

Unfortunately the fallout from scammers like this comes back at the rest of us.Businesses see things like this happen and suddenly it isn't worth all the hassle to send stuff here.Having bought a few things off Justin,I have always found the transactions to be easy and upfront.I always look at the price on the web page and then call on the phone to check shipping costs, never had a problem, and my last parcel only arrived last week.
It is becoming more and more common for overseas companies not shipping here unfortunately, moreso from the UK,but also from the U.S. and also common for many companies, not answering emails or voicemail messages, which probably has something to do with not wanting to deal here.

For my own interest as I buy a lot of engineering supplies from the USA, who were you going to use to ship this item? USPS or one of the rip-off private couriers. I refuse to use FedEx ever again. Quite simply, they are far too expensive.
What is the weight and dimensions of the parcel. I assume a snorkel is not heavy but the dimensions could put it into an expensive bracket.
clubagreenie
3rd March 2011, 09:22 AM
Pretty sure a snorkel will come in as a cubic shipment due to over size dimensions in at least one plane. I think Justin uses USPS pre paid boxes which are very economical. Fixed price for box to max set weight. So you either order to fill the box or hope you diff (heaviest most compact thing I can think of) is under weight for the box limit.
Although that tyrerack uses Fedex and is quite reasonable, but that could come down to qty of shipping.

I use USPS International Priority Flat Rate Boxes for almost everything. Weight limit is 20 lbs. Seventy pounds is the weight limit on USPS for parcels. I have had a Muncie gearbox shipped from Florida by USPS that was broken down into two parcels to get inside the weight limit. It weighed 94 lbs. in one piece. Cost for the two was US$712 against US$940 in one piece by a courier. I can't remember who gave the quote.
As to FedEx, I suppose it come down to what you call reasonable.
