Puma drivers,
My Puma makes a 2-3s beep after its EGR self-cleaning cycle after engine shutdown. It has done so since Day 1, and I thought this was normal.
But on another forum it seems I am one of the few experiencing this. I have told my stealer about this, and I can assure you they will say 'This is normal' in 4 days' time when I go get the car. So I would like some numbers to prove to them that it is NOT normal, hence this poll.
Please will you submit your answer to this poll?
Thanks a mil!

Gary from AliveTuning said this:
I am sure the noise you're hearing is from the electronic servo that controls the vanes on the turbo.
Most modern fuel injected cars have an electic stepper motor to control idle speed, which also make this noise. Anyone ever played with servos on a radio controlled car? These also make a similar sound.
Since the noise these make is quite high frequency, people with hearing loss (age related?) may not be able to hear it.
Regards,
Gary.

If this noise can only be heard by people with no hearing loss then those numbers are looking pretty scary:
85% of all defender drivers suffer from hearing loss!

Got the landy back - they say it's normal.
For those of you with hearing, err, challenges, the beep should be audible on this video I just recorded with my phone

Listened to the video several times and can't hear a beep.
I can hear a clunk or loud clicking sound just after engine stops - is this what you call a beep?

No, the 'clunk' is the EGR self-cleaning cycle aka the 'chuka-chuka' noise. This occurs 5 times in a row, then there's a beep. It's faint on the video, not the best quality since it was taken with my phone.
It could be one of those sounds that older people cannot hear?

Yes, I get that. No beep, so at 67 and too many years working in a noisy environment, I guess is why I can't hear the beep.
So the chances are that my Puma does have a beep. Next time I am with some young people I will see if they can hear it.

I think I can just hear a noise on the recording albeit that it was recorded on a mobile phone and delivered by way of a compressed sound file through the speakers on my computer.
I can't hear a noise from mine....because usually I'm not that close or at the time a car has driven by or a plane has flown over or I am old.
Can I ask the obvious question?
If the machine makes this noise (or doesn't) should I be worried and are there other noises that I can (or can't) hear that I should be listening for?
The way I see it I have five choices:
Consult an audiologist with regards to my hearing loss.
Consult a young and competant Land Rover mechanic to find out if the noises are within normal parameters.
Consult a psychologist for my developing neurosis.
Sell the Defender.
Get on with life knowing that I'm getting old and my hearing is deteriorating, the Defender is going well, I'm still quite well adjusted and I'm not about to get rid of the Defender.
Option 5 for me!

There is another option, which I took: get a BAS remap with the EGR-shut feature, then you don't have to worry about the chuka-chuka sound nor the beeping :D
I loaded my BAS remap last night, and this morning I had to go to the suspension specialist, 70km away. I kept looking for a 7th gear on the highway! This is what the standard Puma map should have been like!
As BAS promised, this is what I wanted - smoother, more linear power delivery, and of course the EGR self-cleaning does not happen. All the way there & back (140km highway driving) it felt livelier, but not so much that even an LR mechanic would notice the difference, or if he did, would put it down to tyres, fuel, etc.

I can hear the beeps on the video.
Pretty sure I don't hear them on my truck. Can you hear them with the bonnet shut, door shut and seated in the drivers seat?

I have a Puma and a Ford Transit (similar engines). Both make this noise on shut down after EGR cleaning. To me it sounds like a high pitch pressure venting sound, or leak back sound form the engine. I suppose it could be some electronic control operating which might sound similar. Only lasts a few seconds and have never even considered it as a problem as I have heard similar sounds from my other vehicles upon shut down. It is louder in the Transit than the Defender but only slightly so.

initally on the pole I ticked no, but I have to say yes now. It is very faint I must say.
I would not have even noticed till this thread was put up, but my cars is running and that's all I care about.
I have noticed but it also doesn't bother me either is the EGR chuga chuga chuga has gotten louder over the 11000 klm the car has done.
I think it's funny, it seems that classic Defender drive train chuga chuga chuga one gets pushing in the clutch on a hill, is now mimicked by the motor.

Had another listen to the sound. On both the Puma andmy new Ford Transit the sound comes from the EGR valve area. Lasts about 3 seconds on the Puma and 10 seconds on the Transit. At the end of this time there is a "clunk" or "click" noise like a relay or solinoid is closing (or opening). You will only hear it close up. I would say it is part of the operation of the EGR and would consider it normal. The Puma noise is best heard with bonnet up. I can hear the Transit with or without the bonnet open.
If it is not normal then my Puma and Transit are both faulty.

just had a listen to mine, and yep, it does have the beep,
its very faint, and you probably wouldn't here it if you weren't listening for it :)

After the BAS remap with EGR-shut, initial fill up after a 200km run returned consumption of 9.5l/100km.
Went to Tulbagh for the long weekend and gave it some foot on the R44 in strong winds, and spent an hour idling in heavy traffic on Boyes Drive this evening. Consumption was 10.8l/100km after this run.
Will continue to monitor & report consumption.
