Gday...
Got a chip in the very bottom of the windscreen on the D3 - oncoming ute threw a rock and bing! I am currently in Biggenden QLD and would expect to go to Bundaberg.
Tried Windscreens O'Brien for an online quote - because it is within 5cm of edge of screen their equipment cannot fix chip - therefore replacement windscreen required.
The D3 has auto-wiper sensors (but no heating that I am aware of) and last year, when I also had a chip fixed, I was told a replacement screen was around $2,100. However, O'Briens have just quoted me $509 plus $25 for lower moulding - and depending when they replace the screen, maybe two side mouldings at $115 each. All up $764.
Does all this seem right? Very cheap from what I had been told was cost of a screen last year.
Cheers

Seems very cheap.
I had a screen replaced by O'briens in Townsville in early '10, it was covered by insurance but when I picked the car up they said that it was good I had glass insurance because it would have cost me over $1200 otherwise.
So, unless there is rampant deflation on D3 windscreens on the East coast, that seems cheap as Chips!

I would enquire with them as to wether the screen is the standard screen or if it includes screen with sensors. I have heard that the sensors can be reused however they often dont last long when they are.

Mine was done prior to last owner having to replace for RWC. Windscreen repairer/supplier recommended by Lance Dixon LR. Has rain sensors and heated screen, cost previous owner around $900.

Hi,
A few years back I had a Windscreen replaced on my D3 SE with sensors. Installed with replacement mouldings for less than $500.
At that time I had a $500 excess on my insurance and no free windscreen. Turned out that the Windscreen replacement was only $490 so no need to use insurance.

$440 fitted from Yass windscreens and Glass (small independant shop) 12 months ago for a non genuine screen. The rain sensor is transferred over from the old screen and I have had no issue with it since the screen replacement.
They reused the trim panels on my screen.

I had the windscreen replaced in my D3 in December last year - after it being hit by about 6 rocks thrown up by a cowboy truckie
Windscreens O'Brien charged me about $576, IIRC. They had to remove the LR RAI before being able to get at the off side A trim. So bit of extra work.
No problem with it so far - apart from them not pushing the upper trim piece home and it started resonating at 110km/h on the Hume Hwy. I pushed it all the way in and no problems since. Even on the 2900km trip from Sydney-Griffith-Mungo NP-Silverton -Kinchega NP-Ivanhoe-Hillston-Griffith-Sydney trip I did last week!

All you guys that have had replacements by Obriens, can you tell me if they used the correct OEM screen by pilkingtons or did they fit the chinese XYC brand ??
I've heard bad things about the XYC manufacturer and don't want to replace the screen with a pile of cr@p..
Going to call Obriens tomorrow and see what they use in Melbourne.
All help appreciated..
cheers

Gday...
Since I posted the original on this thread, I had seven star chips in 2011 on QLD roads  (all fixed by O'Briens or Novus) .... and then about September last year I got a big crack from a minute stone chip .... O'Briens changed screen in Townsille for me - insurance job.
That screen worked fine until in late December last year, in Victoria on a back road, I got another huge star chip right smack in front of my view - new screen required.
O'Briens in Sale Gippsland replaced it again under insurance. It has been in the vehicle now since Jan and up to now ... not a mark on it (SHHHHHHHH some one may hear) ..... and has not caused any issues.
O'Briens give an Australia-wide (life-time?) guarantee and I have talked with others who have found them excellent to deal with.

Gday...
To be honest, I don't know. Given the Australia-wide (life-time?) guarantee I didn't worry ... and interestingly, the Townsville one, the auto-wipers didn't work ... and they couldn't figure out why - correct screeen, all connected properly .... at their cost (O'Briens) they teed up for the Townsville Dealer to check it out .. and the dealer couldn't figure out why either - so they re-loaded the software ...fixed up fine.
I also don't know the brand of the one installed in Sale either .. but again, went in no problems, auto wipers this time were not a problem. I have had no issues at all since ... as I said, it is still in 'unmarked' condition, no leaks, no issues .... so I am satisfied with the screen whichever one it is.

cheers John.
I will check with OB tomorrow.
I do like the fact that the OEM glass has opticool
in it. I doubt the cheapers will have the same as Pilkingtons OEM.
As I am not paying I would like the best:o) (or least the same)
Again cheers for the feedback, much appreciated.

Had a chat with OB today, and my insurance ( coles).
Cole happy to pay for OEM replacement, OB use the Chinese made XYG by default.
Benefits as far as I have research include, stronger screen less open to scratching, plus Pilkington screens have a UV coating which keeps 30% of the heat out. Pretty important of a machine with so much glass.
little pilikington quote.
"
Pilkington coated windshields reflect more than 30 per cent of the sun's energy (more than five times that of a standard glass). This particularly benefits the new generation of vehicles that are commonly designed with larger glass areas."
Anyway, gets changed next week. So I guess we will see.
For me it was worth asking the question as I don't have to foot the bill this time.

Tbh. I didn't ask once they approved it.
I will ask them Wednesday when it gets fitted.
OBs are sourcing it so guess they will know.
I'll report back then.

"

I regard UV coatings, (Ultra Violet), as stopping fading of interiors and also reducing sunburn, but not really stopping what I call heat. To stop heat, one needs an IR, (Infra Red), coating and that is not so common, at least in EU spec vehicles. Here in North America, GM, Ford, and Chrysler plus the Japanese have what they call Low E or Low Emissivity glass. This is glass produced with something that blocks Infra Red. As such, penetration of the heat rays of the sun into the interior are reduced and that means a smaller air conditioner and hence reduced engine load and therefore better mileage - or more correctly, better fleet wide CAFE, (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) numbers.
What I am saying is that the Pilkington trade mark Optikool refers only to UV penetration, (or its reduction), but not to IR which I would sure like to have as well. To resolve the problem on the side glass, I was able to install IR shielding film, but that is not practical for the windscreen.
The link below relates to the film I used. I would really like to hear that Land Rover now has available a windscreen that has what is called here in North America, Low Emissivity properties, - that it shields one from Infra Red as well as UV.
DISCO3.CO.UK Photo Gallery - LR3 miscellaneous/Trolley Jack Adapter (http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=3801&pos=30)
The simple test for IR rejection is that the steering wheel does not burn your hands nor does the dash heat up. I had this type of windscreen in my 1992 Buick Roadmaster and 98 Chev Pickup so Low E or IR rejection is not something new.

Hi Bbyer
You are correct, the opikool side windows and rear are uv protected and tinted to cool.
However polling ton windscreens are IR resistant .
I have extended the previous quote from their website .
"
Infrared Reflective Solar Control
Pilkington coated windshields reflect more than 30 per cent of the sun's energy (more than five times that of a standard glass). This particularly benefits the new generation of vehicles that are commonly designed with larger glass areas.
In addition to its coated glass product, Pilkington's Siglasolâ„¢ automotive glazing also reflects the sun's heat. Siglasolâ„¢ is constructed from an infrared reflecting film, laminated between two pieces of glass. The product can be used in all vehicle apertures. Also available is a product with a nonmetallic interlayer"
Either way, I can't find similar claims by the Chinese aftermarket windscreen I was going to be left with!

The link below suggests that the FF Range Rover from 2003 on wards has optional heat resisting glass available. It should, you can get sound, heated, and AK47 resistant glass as an option so IR should not be too much to ask for as I also see my 1992 Roadmaster listed.
The difference between the Roadmaster and the FFRR is that near the interior rear view mirror where the black is, there is no IR resistant metal coating that also blocks RF, (Radio Frequencies). Hence that is where you would locate one of the toll pass transmitters. The Roadmaster windscreen did not have this feature - why not - well no automated toll readers in those days.
My guess is that with the IR rejection option, one would see Siglasol rather than Optikool marked on the FFRR glass. This therefore sounds like for the 3 or the 4, we are limited to windscreens with UV rejection and a bit of IR rejection, but even in 2012, the true IR rejecting glass I had in my 1992 Roadmaster is still not yet available from Land Rover.
Re XYG, some degree of UV rejection is near impossible not to have in glass; even that Coke bottle dropped from heaven in that movie had some.
As you suspect however, and from what I have heard, Uluru thru XYG glass is just not the same as Ayers Rock thru a Series windscreen - something about the colour and shape, at least during the day. At night, the colour concerns are not so evident, just the shape.

Bugger! my windscreen has just cracked from a tiny stone mark under the passenger side wiper right at the bottom of the screen. I have just had a bullseye fixed from our trip to WA where I had a stone hit directly in front of the driver.
It looks like a new screen coming up and as the car is only 6 months old I will insist on a genuine Pilkington one.

Got mine done on Wednesday , genuine pilkington.
It's lovely, optikool. And clear as a bell.
Even the install guys reckon for a windscreen that size the oem
Was clearer .
They have had a few xyg screens with distortion issues.
I'm a happy camper .
Good luck with your new one .

I had a new one fitted at Instant Windscreens in Kalgoorlie last week. Glass was OEM - they got it up from barbagallo in Perth. They told me that cost of glass alone was more than $1400 - I don't know what they charged to fit it as insurance covered the job.
All good now though - very clear glass and auto wipers working normally in Perth's crap weather this week. :D

Do you know if they also replaced the wiper sensor - and what about the windscreen pillar trim clips??
I also have to put in a claim for my windscreen this week so the intell provided on this thread has been good - discussed the brand of windscreen with my insurance company this week - they will only cough up for an OEM windscreen if the busted one was OEM.
