View Full Version : CAV filter / Extra filter for Puma

Hi all, based on the possibility of watery fuel on my trip up north, I'm thinking about putting a CAV filter inline with OEM filter. Has anyone done this on a Puma before and where did you fit the filter - there does not seem to be space before the OEM filter, and there seems to be little space in the engine bay - any ideas?

I haven't so will be interested in the replies.

There is an alternative.

I assume that the tank breather has been relocated so that only water from fuel supplies is the issue.

I bought a funnel from TJM that filters water from fuel.

Pro Quip Mr Funnel Fuel Filter Funnels (http://www.proquip.com.au/ProductPages/Funnels/MrFunnel.html?gclid=COmj85mPragCFU6ApAodLFFjHQ)

The idea is that you start filling fuel from the bowser via the funnel to check the quality of the fuel. If water is evident then you continue to fill via the funnel. If no water is found then fill direct from the bowser.

This at least overcomes the engineering and warranty issues that might attend any modification of the system by adding another filter.

Fit a Racor filter/separator. These are the duck's guts. They have cyclonic separator section like a Donaldson air cleaner.

Hi Brian, any ideas about where it will fit?

I haven't done this but watch with interest. I was always a bit concerned that the pump for the fuel is on the engine and didn't want to add any further restrictions putting more strain on the pump. It is hard enough already to prime the fuel system after getting air in.

I had intended to add a filter / priming pump similar to those of the later Nissan Patrols, not a bad set up IMHO.

This will be an issue with us later on and I will have to do something as we draw fuel out of 44 gallon drums on some of the spots we go to.

I installed in my Defe the Ryco unit, it is very good and good solution for $ 65.00

No, it is a Defender 110 Tdi300, but that does not make any diference, the filter unit is market for marine applications but is used on tractors and other diesel vehicles.
The only mod that I would do if the unit will be mounted in an exposed area is replacing the glass bowl by the LR metel bowl fitted on the rear water trap on the Tdi 300 Discos and Defenders.

after picking up a load of crook biodiesel I now use the disposable superexpensive auto $2.00 filters at the tank outlet. it is fitted with hand operated jubilee clips ( no tools ) and a spare carried. Has the added benefit of being clear so any water or gunge is immediately apparent. also use a coallescer with drain to trap any water. Believe the coallescer with ally bowl and drain was standard fit. Standard and CAV filter in the front.

I bought the CAV adaptor that screws onto the original housing over 10 years ago for my Tdi. Pat

Hi, I asked about this at Ritters and mechanic was not sure if it is possible because of high pressure in Puma fuel lines. He is going to advise. Cheers.

Seems like no one has fitted an extra filter to their Puma Defender. Is this because it is so new, or because you can't?

We are looking at it here in NZ with the local unoffical LR guys, they were invesigating the fuel pressures etc also, will report back next week, we waited until the warranty for the puma had expired first

?? The fuel lines aren't pressurised until the fuel gets to the engine. There is no in tank pump on the Puma, they have a combined lift/hp pump on the engine.

My biggest concern with adding an extra filter is that the pump has to draw the fuel through both filters. I would be more tempted with fitting an aux tank and filtering the line from that tank to the main tank, if you had to use "suspect" fuel you could put it in the aux tank and filter it into the main.

Cheers,

Thats what I'm doing, fill the main through the secondary with transfer pump and water trap/filter. Pat

That it is how I use it on the Tdi300 without any problems.
