After a minor altercation last year (truck reversed into the front, destroyed bonnet and bumper), I have not driven the D4 in any really unlighted conditions at night. There has always been street lighting, or a full moon.

My son borrowed the car and went down the coast and rang complaining that the light was poor. Checking the car on the garage door when he got home, they appear aimed a lot lower than before. After the the repair, the lights were not totaly tight and I had to force the retaining clips back to there 'locked' position.

Now, I've been told by some friends who say the 'know' that according to an ADR the xenons MUST self level - never seen it in the D4, but they do in the Golf GTi.

So. Experts. Do I need to adjust the lights or take the thing to LR to get the 'puter flashed to make them do it themselves?

The self-levelling mechanism is the air suspension! They are adjusted manually.

While the lights on my RRS are good they are certainly no better than the halogens in my 101. Not sure the bi xenons are worth the extra complexity.

After a troll through the manual, how the hell do I adjust the lights? There's nothing I could find in there - just for the halogens there's supposed to be a switch near the fog light ones. Xenon's don't have that. Bloody LR.

Take it back to the repairer. It should have all been done properly in th the first place.

Don't know if this will help but my halogens have two white socket head plastic adjusters that can be seen on the rear of the headlamp when looking from the top. One is for left/right, one up/down. I just use an extended 8mm Allen key to adjust them

See this file - has three Windows XPS files covering headlamp adjustment and levelling

The ADR doesn't require self levelling. it does require cleaning, hence you should have headlamp washers.

The Bi-Xenons use the same white plastic adjusters. A Phillips head screwdriver fits into them reasonably well and there's not a lot of resistance. It's a while since I played with them but from memory one of them can only be seen through a hole in the supporting frame directly above it. The system is pretty simple and tilts the whole light assembly up/down so the aim of your high-beam halogen fillers moves up/down at the same time.

Ill have a look tonight and see what I can do. Shouldn't be too hard. Or, I could just leave it to the dealer as the car is due for it's 36k service - bought it and had a free 'corporate' service plan thrown in that was for 12k servicing instead of the usual 24k. I'll get them to adjust them then. And enjoy the 2011 Freelander loaner that they will give me too :)

My dealer adjusted mine as I wasn't happy when I purchased the vehicle. The dealers workshop has a chart on the wall that they aim the lights at and adjust accordingly.

FWIW,

after having driven on country roads at night for the last 3 nights, and around some farms...I'd say they aren't up to the hype that the sales pitch had.

I was told I wouldn't need spotties. Wrong. While they light up the road side nicely (saw a roo tonight a lot earlier than I would have with the old RRS halogens) and the road surface be it wet or dry, they lack distance in the centre especially over 80kph. So when the ARB bar is finally released for the MY14...Then fitted....I will give the Bi-xenons some assistance.

Fine for the big smoke though.

.................I did have to raise mine a little from the pre-delivery setting.

I fitted a 55W HID kit to my fill-ins - a huge difference in light output.

Be sure to include Fyrlyts (http://www.fyrlyts.com.au) in your purchasing research. No affiliation, just a very happy user

My old D3 has the adaptive bi xenons and the head lights are excellent, when I had a bull bar fitted a couple years ago I thought I'd improve the headlights even more with a set of IPF Xtreme spotties. Guess what there is stuff all improvement over the standard bi xenons.

If your going to get spotties make sure they actually will make a noticeable improvement before parting with your hard earned.

Thanks Terry.

So what were you trying to improve upon? Was it the reach in the middle?

And what spot lights would you get now, knowing what you know?

Cheers.

Like others I thought they just needed a bit more oomph, as I said the IPF's were no stronger than the bi xenons, so it was a waste of time and money.

Re what spot lights would be better? Sorry I don't know and now I wouldn't bother.

I would suggest going back and having another glance at the ADR

Must be self levelling and have cleaning function..
