Pretty sure the recommended is a 950CCA for a TD5 so i would guess the same for you.

I'm hoping that the right answer to that question is a Supercharge Allrounder MRV70 because I just fitted one in my Defender. :p If you can wait 4 or 5 years, i may be able to confirm that.

I bought from the local servo and he says he sells a lot to boat owners and that people seem happy with them.
They seem to be a lot heavier than similar size batteries. I hope that is a good thing.
Others have said good things here about that battery in the past.

Yellow or Blue Top Optima. I've got a Blue Top that is unkillable. Recharges quickly, can withstand heavy drain, highly vibration resistant, can be mounted in any orientation, no leaks or maintenance, etc, etc. Only downside is cost, but mine has paid for itself many times over in being able to sustain heavy cranking or deep draw. And it'll punch a lot harder than its specs suggest based on my experience.

950 cca ?, is that a mack or a landy, no way its 950 , maybe 550.
I got the biggest supercharge gold series i could fit, 670 cca and will probably get an allrounder for a 2nd batt.

You should be able to pick up a Century MarinePro 720 for less than $200 from BatteryWorld. Good solid performer in an N70 (12") case that can take a hiding with vibrations and pretty good at recovering from deep drawdown.
Its all I use in the 'fender and flotilla of boats I watch over!!!

+1 for the Supercharge battery. I installed an NS70 580CCA in March 2002 and replaced it in Sept 2009.

I am running 2x AC Delcos. The startjng battery is 600 cca 82Ah & the aux is 680cca 97 Ah. Had to move power steering reservoir to fit aux. Both batteries are Marine/Rv.

NRMA recommended;
Discovery 1999 onwards 1000CCA
Defender 850CCA

Why does the Disco with the same engine need a bigger battery than the Defender?
Is it to wind the windows up, adjust the seats, heat the seats, warm the coffee in the cup holders, power the sound system or some other reason? :p

This is for the Td5 engine from 1999 (in a Disco), this thread is for a 98 300Tdi engine.
I'm pretty sure the original Disco 300Tdi battery is only around 550ish cca.
A bit more oomph is always nice for cranking, so around 650cca is usually enough for the 300Tdi IMO.
The last couple I have had have also been Supercharge: Supercharge Batteries - Car Batteries, Maintenance, Expanded Grid Technology (http://www.supercharge.com.au/battery_search.php)
I always go direct to their warehouse and get a great deal on the Gold 650cca one (MF80D26R).

Probably need to replace the start battery this winter.
What is the best (highest cca and vibration tolerant) battery that will fit in a D1 tdi in 2017?

the stock battery for a disco tdi is an n55 format battery, pic a brand and go for it, you get what you pay for.
in a defender its an N70.
you can shoe horn an n70 into a disco (dual batteries is easier)
and you can just squeeze an n85 into a defender (you can just get 2 n70s into the.
Then N70 size spec is valid for all shed class upto the fords (I never bothered to check out the seat box spacing under one of those yet so it may still be valid but your milage may vary)

The revival of this thread has saved me the trouble of checking to see how old my Defender battery is now.
That battery is still there and still doing its job.
I recently bought a cheap volt meter that plugs into the accessories socket. I couldn't resist the $3.98 price. :)
According to that, the battery is at 12.6 or 12.7 volts when the vehicle has been sitting for the couple of days and the ignition is first turned on. I assume at that stage the glow plugs are drawing some power. When the engine is running it shows 13.6 to 13.9.
So I am happy with what I bought.

NS70X Century here.
720CCA.
That's all I could get so late in the pre prep from supercheep near me.
Would have loved an Optima or something more like that, but never mind.
It's not cold enough to push its cranking power ability now, but it did dip below 10 degrees at the campsite on three mornings, and no problem with mine bursting into life in half a sec!
I'll see how it goes in the coming months.
Brother had a truck sized N70ZZ (or whatever) in the TD5(just bought), and it had one issue cranking on the first cold morning.
No idea why, but then on the other two cold mornings it gave no trouble.
On the Century website they list the NS70 and NS70X as the two compatible products for the 300 TDi D1.
X model has 720 CCA, non X model has 650.
My old battery(still ok, but I didn't trust it) was a 650CCA battery of some description from RACV years back.

My current start battery is an N50 size supercharge allrounder 650 cca
N70 wont fit due to air con plumbling but an N55 probably would as not much difference in size to N50 based on dr google.
It wont last its 3rd winter.....that is pretty ordinary....isnt it?
Hard to find any with better than 650cca in that size. I did see an optima the other day that had around 900 cca. Only about a hundred dollars more expensive.

.....
N70 wont fit due to air con plumbling but ....
NS70 will tho.
Obviously not as big as a N70, but still more than enough CCA to start a diesel on a cold morning.
it is a tight fit, but easily doable.
See the Century site (http://www.centurybatteries.com.au/search-results'searchtext=ns70&searchmode=AnyWord) for a list of NS70 batteries.

My 200tdi Deefer's N70ZZ vented (? 720CCA) gave brilliant service for about 5 years, and still going strong when she left me for another man. Icy Tamworth winters, started first crank with no warm up.
Bear with me, you'll understand where this is going in a moment Mr/Ms Edddo ...
Current 98 D1 300tdi with a standard (?NS70) (edit) vented (? about 600 odd AH, only lasted 3 years) always took ages even with lots of plug warming in winter, lovely 42* summer days, whispered sweet nothings or even the odd harsh word, and always cranked slowly and unhappily. Thought it was the plugs and compression etc and just crossed my fingers and waited for the PM to raise a bit more revenue. Had an N70 size vented deep cycle over the other side (moved the power steering reservoir a bit) to run the champagne cooler, tent video security system, and charger for the direct line MI5 prepaid mobile.
Despite the dual setup, the main one never had enough power for the throne warmer, cappuccino machine, corgi shampooer, or Liz's robotic arm waver. Also got a bit jaded with the acid washing all over the joint every time I did any serious off road work (like that nasty big gutter outside the post office, those scary steep ramps at Woollies, and that car park at work with the really narrow bays etc), so despite the obvious threats to my manhood and tradition itself, I decided to try a sealed jobbie and to hell with my reputation.
So the local air con mob moved the pipes over, and I bunged in an N70ZZHD MF (Maint Free) ...
Well, blow me down with the bow wave of a passing Series 1, the old girl blasts off first crank, spring, summer, autumn, middle of a cold Tamworth winter, no plug warming, no holding your tongue that special way or anything ... the tent's much safer from those Toymota deviants, and MI5's looking at buying one of those new fangled smartphones ... Liz is much happier, and doesn't even get so cranky when I leave the seat up on the throne ...
About 5 days and $600 for about the best A/C mob here to move the air con pipes over a cuppla inches (they're OEM Secret Ingredient Long Length Yttrium [SILLY] alloy with OEM High Performance Unheardof Unmatchable Fitting Sections [PUUFS], sourced under undocumented, outsourced, privatised subcontract from that old WW1 machinery dump in the Antarctic ... which all required a lot of ... flopping about). About $300 for the main battery (N70ZZHD MF) and (?) $400 for an 'Ultimate' 110Ah AGM (the only one I could find with an underhood warranty).
Well worth the Chauffer's time and the scurrilous dip into the public purse ... blow the public protests ... let the rotters eat cake ...

I'm reviving this thread because in May 2011 I said that in 4 or 5 years time I would be able to comment on whether my choice of a Supercharge Allrounder MVR70 was a wise decision.
Well here it is seven years later and I can confirm that I got my money's worth from the battery and I have just replaced it with the same. They have gone up in price $30 since 2011.
I figure seven years is good enough. However, I don't know how long they last. It was still doing what batteries are supposed to do, but as we are planning a trip involving a small amount of fairly remote camping, SWMBO declared that she would be happier if we did the trip with a new battery, rather than a seven year old one.

7 1/2 out of mine and only replaced due to a trip like you, it still held 12.8 volts in the shed for 6 months before dying.

Looks like you've had plenty of replies already, but I recently fitted dual Optima Yellow Tops and they've been unstoppable since, they're absolute beasts of batteries and I got them for $300 each when I bought both of them at a local battery place in Surrey Hills VIC (I think)...anyway, great batteries and highly recommended.

Yep. Ns70 size crank battery in mine, with n70 size aux. 200tdi disco with ps res moved to other side for clearance.
