Hi everyone,
I'm looking at buying a discovery on dual fuel with
277000 km on the clock. I would really appreciate
Some insight into what specific problems to look for
As a newbie, with limited lr knowledge.
The discovery is a petrol v8 3.9 and the dealer is
Asking $6999.
The info on the LPG is that the tank is in the back base of the
Rear of the car(inside floor).
I know that discos can have problems, but
Just looking for further advice on signs that
I should look for to make the best informed
Decision prior to purchase.
Thanking all responders in advance.

Hey Chomps,
I'm no expert, I ask more questions here than I answer by far - but my purchase was a 96 Disco with roughly the same on the clock as yours and dual fuel.
I've had a few problems with it, it's the car you love to hate. You love it when it's working properly and hate its guts when it's not :-)
Anyhoo - there's a few things that have happened to mine since I bought it.
The perhaps biggest is that I discovered after buying it that LPG tanks have to be checked and serviced after 10 years. Mine is due now and I'm waiting till hols to get it done. Approx cost varies but round here seems to be about $500.
Mine threw it's headgasket out the door two days after I bought it. Being a V8 means you get 2... That set me back about $1500 but I had a mechanic do that for me, and he put stellite (sp?) valve seats in at the same time. There was very little wear on the engine though which was nice - he could check when the lid was off.
Make sure it's got anti-freeze in the water system. All the water jackets will corrode if not. Mine had just enough, it's got 50% now. Antifreeze isn't in there to stop it freezing - just to stop it corroding.
Buy yourself a multimeter - you'll have fun with electrics :-) Mostly relays that go, or switches. If you've got the electric seats the drivers side switch is probably knackered, but there's tutorials on here on how to fix them.
Um - I can't think of much more - the gurus will let you know all the really good stuff :-)

Have a look in the lpg section under technixal forums. use the search function if you cannot find it. My D1 had 218000k on it and now has 360000 and a lot of that was towing a car trailer. We went from Gladstone (Qld)to Perth and back and used lpg all the way. Biggest problem is to find an lpg bloke who knows what he is doing, a lot don't. Took me 4 attempts in Brisbane and that included the original installer and have not been back since I found someone better. Some set the lpg to run rich so it does not backfire, mine has not backfired for 8 years now. Beeutey is the go for info, if you can get to see him, he may sort it for you.

As the guys say, look in the LPG section. As far as the engine goes, the main points of difference for a succesful run on gas are: plug heat range, plug gap, ignition lead type, ignition lead spacing, ignition timing, ignition coil/amp health, mixture settings, petrol assisted start settings. With due attention a LPG Disco will run trouble free for years. Post up some pics of the LPG or pm me your phone number if you want a chat.
