I have been having withdrawls after selling my last LR and I stumbled accross this 2A on Ebay down the road from me.
The radiator is in need of an internal clean, a slight miss in number 6 cylinder and requires a general tidy up.

It is a 6 cylinder with a generator instead of an alternator
I have stripped the old timbers off the tray and will start the cleanup for the roadworthy.

So if you are in the Mansfield area and see this, give a wave

Looks great Gavin. A couple of question though :). What motor does it have in it as the 6 cyl Landy motors where a late 2A thing and yours has narrow headlights (early).

And why is it chained to a Hilux ??

Congratulations Louise looks fantastic:BigThumb:

All you have to do is get rid of the Hilux now:rocket: (great cars but they have no personality)

Keep the photos coming

Got any pictures under the bonnet and in the cab? The six started in 1967, and the headlights went into the mudguards in 1969 (although some may have been later - my 1970 model has them in the radiator support), so this looks like a fairly early, possibly very early six, and hence may be significant.

The head came off today and there was oil leaking thru to number 6. I will clean up the valves while it's off
Waiting on gaskets, thermostat cover and the radiator wired out

According to the parts book, the hole next to the temperature gauge is for "Plug Large, For redundant holes in panel, 338016".

Nice car! It must be quite a rarity nowadays to find one with the original six-cylinder engine.

Nice car! It must be quite a rarity nowadays to find one with the original six-cylinder engine.

There is an article on this engine in the LRO magazine I picked up in town today. As they point out there, it was not a lot more powerful than the four anyway, but then because they needed to sell it into markets with low grade petrol, it had to be modified to low compression, add emissions modifications, and the extra power was just about enough to carry the extra weight. The Westlake conversion fitted to the NAS models was notably better, but as pointed out, this is incompatible with RHD.

One point I would disagree with about the article - they refer to the engine as being a "1930s design". Hardly accurate - the patent for the IOE design with hemispherical combustion chamber was issued in September 1942, and the six was not even on the drawing board until the early fifties. Just for comparison, when the engine was introduced in the Landrover in 1967, Toyota was using and engine design in the Landcruiser first introduced by Chevrolet in 1929 (and based on a 1914 engine), and the CJ Jeeps still had the prewar side valve engine, although this was modified about then to an IOE configuration.

Despite having little to recommend it as far as power or economy goes, the six is a very nice engine to drive in good condition, but seems not to stand abuse as well as does the four. And parts are a lot harder to find.

I am impressed! That's a very nice looking Landy you have there Gavin. Can't wait to see more of it as you tidy it up a little.:)
Thanks for sharing.

That's your chassis number, but I suspect you realise that. Calvin lists it as:

347
Model: Land Rover, Series IIA
Body type: Basic
Wheel base: 109in
Engine: 6-cylinder
Model years: 1966-1971
Destination: Completely knocked down (CKD), right-hand drive (RHD)
03636Serial number
D
Design: Three significant design modifications
Suffix used from April 1967 till March 1968

Should be the same number as on the LH rear back spring hanger.

How do I find out the specific year when it comes to re-registering it?

Nice! :)

IMHO there's only 2 models better than that one. The suffix H hard top and the suffix H station wagon. That's mainly because I like the wide headlamp models.

Similar chassis numbers to that one were sold in NSW in 1968 and early 1969.
