My black beast is out of warrenty in October and today I received an invertation by the dealer to extend it for another 3-4 years. As I have plans to change the exhaust, tune, ect, and all the current mods I will let it go. I, like many Defender owners, was under the cloud of doubt that Defender owners would not be covered by this offer. Very confussing:confused::confused:.

I am almost sure there is no such thing as a Land Rover extended warranty for the Defender. They dropped it some time ago. This warranty that you have been offered sounds like an "aftermarket" or third party warranty and may or may not be worth two bob. Have a very close look at what it covers and who it is through before you pay a cent.

I wont be taking it on. The Puma is the first vehicle I ever bought new and I cannot wait till its out of warranty to play with it.

Done lots but just got knocked back for pinion oil seal because I have an ARB locker. I will wait until the last day before I let loose just in case. Its only done 20000km so if it brakes I have a good case.

Same, same. Warranty is up in October, not a peep from the dealers regarding extended warranty.
I know you’re dealing with Ozy Park and I’m dealing with Cannington. Same mob, different location.
I feel the same way as you. When the warranty runs out, it’s play time. :twobeers:
I had planned to gather a shed load of goodies to put on once it ran out. Hasn’t quite panned out that way. :Thump:Bugger.
Never mind, I still have one or two odds and sods to fit, mainly electrical.
Onward and upward. :BigThumb:

Extended warranty's are loaded in favour of whoever is backing it. I asked about it and the service manager told me to avoid it. There are lots of exclusions as to what is covered. All of the expensive bits and jobs are excluded under various clauses. You will pay a lot of money for supposed peace of mind but when you go to claim you will see how difficult it is.Lots of money, for nothing in return. Avoid like the plague, as they say.

I got the extended warranty when I had Lara (TD5 Defender)...
Paid for itself quickly when I drowned the alternator in Toolangi with the Vic boys..
New alternator for nix!
Even in the highly modified state, they always paid out.
As for LR std warranty - they cannot legally void anything that isn't directly influenced by the modifications you made. So start playing...
Eg. Fitting a bigger intercooler / exhaust cannot be used to void a claim for a leaking gearbox...
The ARB locker / pinion seal leak - I can understand...

Southern classic cars in wollongong used to offer extended warranty and where cheaper than sydney dealers by so much that for VW they actually used to sell to rival dealers. i'm not 100% sure if they cover LR defenders as I own a 2002 and only got extended for my wifes VW multi-van.

I believe the after market warranty (as opposed to extension of new car warranty) offered by the dealers is backed by Allianz & is supposed to be very good compared to the rest.
There was a thread & comparison somewhere on the forum.

The Land Rover Assured extended warranty (not available for the Defender) was underwritten by Allianz. Allianz no longer offer extended warranty in their own right for the Defender.
There was a post quoting LRA that the Land Rover Assured extended warranty was not available for the defender as it was "classed as a commercial vehicle". This sits rather oddly with the fact that Allianz offer extended warranty on the Ford Transit (same engine as 07+ Defender) which has to be one of the most common "commercial" vehicles on the road.

In my many Communications with LR due to my clutch springs and the dealer not fixing them as the clutch is not covered by the manufactures warranty. I asked LR about extended warranty, they said we don't do them for the defender as it is classed as a commercial vehicle. They said speak to the dealer about an aftermarket one.
I spoke to the dealer yesterday about one as it is in for its 70k service, so getting close to the 100k switch off..
He said not worth the money and would not recommend it, he said they are always trying to find ways of not paying out. So I am taking the dealer at his word for once and not getting one, but I do wonder if there is another reason the dealer would not want me to get one, maybe it is more work for them.
Has anyone had any issues with them? and what are the alternatives to Allianz? maybe just keep a slush fund going for repairs, or put a little extra into my salary package to cover the unknown.
Pat.

Having a mechanic as a (to be) father in-law, who is an independent, he won't touch cars who are being done under an extended warranty. They typically expect the repairer to find the absolute cheapest replacement part and provide quotes of the like in their own time, and only pay on average $30-40 an hour labour only, and rarely cover other parts, seals, gaskets required in completing the work.
Half the aftermarket warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on.

I will clarify - the above relates to aftermarket warranties only, extension of manufacturer's is different. But end of the day, warranties are offered through a business, a business aims to make money, hence will do what they can to keep their bottom line!

I cant see how any business would make money on an aftermarket warranty for my defender.. the cost of the policy would be covered in the first few months if they were to fix the things that have been going wrong. So got 30k left on the LR one, think I will be booking it in for every clatter, bang, drip, rattle I come across in that period, I wonder if the dealer thinks, phew only 30k to go on this one
