I am also looking into a Speedhut replacement speedo unit .

i tried a vdo gauge today as replacement for my fuel gauge and it worked in reverse ... so my tank is full and reads as empty ... the guy at the sop said Pommie cars are weird and they dont accept generic gauges ....

A competent auto sparkie should be able to sort it for you. I'd hazard a guess that you need to switch the connections on the back of the meter. The trouble shooting info on the VDO electric gauges state that if you ground the wire that goes to the sender the fuel gauge should go to zero/empty.
You also need to ensure that you have a meter to match your sender with the correct ohm range.

i cant remem off hand but do a search on ohm range for defender, there is a vdo gauge that suits the factory sender resistance range.

I am after a replacement clock for a Defender TD5 as mine is running but running slowly , how reliable are these clocks? is it worth replacing the clock or would it be better to replace the clock with a rev counter or voltage gague. What have other people done re clocks in Defenders.
 Thanks Allan

Depending on the wiring loom how far you have to run the pickup wire. Very easy with only one wire needed. Some TD5's have the pickup wire behhind the binicle others you have to splice in at the ECU. Not hard at all.

I took the clock out and replaced it with the tacho.

You wil need a "W" tap on your alternator, I think the disco alternator might have it but not the defender one.
Here is a link (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php'showtopic=9408) with some pics and instructions on creating the W terminal. These others may also help you understand what is required.
