the wednesday build finally revealed a glitch 2day.

plodding down highway,, power drops away to idle,,pull over..engine idling happily but no power for fwrd motion.all gauges showing normal readings.

shut down motor.

power up but do not crank, notice temp gauge now up in top end and fluctuating in top 1/4 of gauge..like a flag in a breeze!.

power down/ power up / start -still idling happy but no power-shut down..temp gauge normal.

power up -crank .....all normal

drive away- all normal---------happy days......................

not happy jan...

am sure i have read something along these lines before on the forum...

any clues appreciated , before i EXPRESS myself to dealer....

cheers

I had the "power cut" issue once on my 08 Defender, dealer diagnosed the problem to be a sticking egr valve causing high cylinder head temps, which resulted in the ECU putting the car into limp. There were no warning lights, or DTC's to back this up, however the car never did it again after the EGR valve was changed.

As for the temp gauge.... I'm not sure why it would wave about. If it was permanently all the way up, (ie at FSD - full scale deflection), that would indicate the ECU is in a "resetting" state.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Ditto, I experienced the same symptoms 100 km outside of Winton last week, restarted the car and driven 2000 + km since. Checked out by local mechanic at the time - no fault found. I like the stuck EGR suggestion as the temp was 40+C at the time.

I assume your water level is OK?

Have you tried a battery disconnect / reconnect? I had a limp mode situation with a loose speedo plug - my own doing and all OK is now. Our Puma went into limp mode every now and then and a battery disconnect would fix it.

gauge was sitting at fsd ,,on first systems check,,,then flapped about on second check.......

as for limp mode...i was under the impression it would be just that...[the ability to limp].

but i had no power off idle..

anyways thanks for the feedback gents........cheers

Trailcutter,

Reading your symptoms there is something else to check. Under the driver’s seat there is among all the other host of wiring a single fuse holder containing a fuse related to the immobiliser or similar (mounted on a riveted piece of aluminium). My vehicle did the same as yours with complete power loss and cut out which turned out to be nothing more than this particular fuse vibrating lose.

Phoned LR Assist and I got the “Idiot’s Guide to Breakdowns” starting with “Do you have enough fuel in the car?” Long story short, I phoned LR Assist in the UK and they talked me through the symptoms and ended up fixing it without recovery. I don’t label the event as a letdown as there was actually nothing wrong with the car. Reported it to the stealer on the last service and they crimped and tightened the fuse clips and everything has been fine since.

Hope your solution is as simple and as little disruption as possible!
