View Full Version : What mods wouldn't you do again?

Hi all,
What modifications have you done to your Landy that you wouldn't do again?

Do you regret replacing your exhaust system with something claiming to get more HP but is really just noisier? Perhaps your suspension set up is too harsh or too soft? Seat covers don't match your handbag? Driving lights causing overheating problems?
Sure, it may work for many but did it work for you?

If you were starting over with the same vehicle, which mods wouldn't you waste time or money on again?

P.S. Try not to fling brand names around wherever possible. That just isn't cool.

Snorkel.

I fitted one to my Classic and it ruined the look of the car. Hence the reason I haven't fitted one to the P38A.

Good idea for a thread!

While there is nothing that I /regret/ there are things that in hindsight cost more money than they are worth..

Used Disco 1 rims because they were landrover and 'cheap'. I got 6 of them for less than $50 each.. so cheap initially, yes! Then I had the offset redone ($70ea) then zinc & powder coated ($75ea).. This process took the best part of 3 months, and while I do love the end result I should have just ordered some zu alloys from Rovacraft. (or got a welder, made a jig and reset them myself...)

Also fitted under bonnet sound deadener from a well known auto carpet store.. while it works, I will end up re doing it with something better soon. It was only $60 but a waste of $60 and I'll have to spend more to get it right. (heaver material, heat proof, etc)

Fitted an R380 and 1.2:1 LT230 to my Isuzu.. All up, it was extremely expensive as they were both reco units and the bell housing was custom. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely happy with the results.. its just that 3 weeks (literally 3 weeks!) after I finished it the_grubb announced his MSA box kit, which would have been a much better idea. (esp as I'm doing the turbo now)

On my S.V.X relocation cones +2inch shocks and King springs to find that when loaded its useless and needed air bags to compensate for the boat trailer load and all the junk we take away. Also the slide out drop down fridge mount, you cannot get at anything in the back if its fitted inside the tailgate and to get in the fridge with the boat on we used to have to disconect the boat trailer. Another waste was the half roof rack that I have since passed on to the wife's ninety, replacing it with a full rack so I can transport my Oz tent on the roof and not in the boat.
On the wifes Ninety, duel shocks in the rear. they are good when its fully loaded and the boats on, but like a go Kart when not. That will do before SHMBO cuts of my money and parts of my anatomy.

Jate rings.
I went to the trouble of finding forged Jate rings and imported them from the UK, but they're completely impractical as recovery points because they're under the car. I still like them but since I have no plans that require being airlifted by helicopter I doubt that they will ever get used.

Alloy steering guard.
Soon to be replaced by a steel guard.

Electronic rust protection.
Had this on my previous (new) Defender, but still got a bit of rust. The vendor was obviously used to customers telling them that their vehicle had rusted and were good and ready with a bucket load of excuses and blame games.

The list of mods that I am delighted with and would do over again is much, much longer :D

Excellent idea for a tread.
I will keep an eye on what people post.

I had a roof console in my GQ Patrol that was connected up to the interior lights and alarm. It kept shorting out (wire rubbed through) and actually broke away from the roof on the way up the Cape.
Not a big deal, just an inconvenience at the time.

Apart from the UHF being easy to see and access in the roof console , I really didn't use the extra space the console provided so I will not put one in the Puma.

I wouldn't put ARB lockers in i would have gone straight to Ashcroft. Also I would have changed the diff ratios before putting lockers in because I hardly ever use the damn things with the new ratios. Stupid lockers. Also i would not have bought a Chinese winch. Stupid Chinese winch. Sorry for mentioning names, but I feel ARB lockers while a great product when working aren't particularly well thought out.

If I had my time over again I wouldn't take the center muffler out of my TD5 exhaust. Whilst it may have made a small, perhaps even unnoticeable, improvement to performance and doesn't make excessive noise, judging by the type of people who think it sound great I think now that it was a step in the wrong direction.

Oh and I don't care much for the ned kelly 'such is life' sticker in the back window but that was the previous owner.

Flagg, no semblance of water proofing, large chunks of mud easily made it into gearbox. The part of the housing where the long rods hold it together, sorry don't know what they are called, snapped off completely on second use. They are great for putting on trailers to use as loading device but in my experience no good off road. I had mine around 2 or so years ago so the quality may be better but you can source much better Australian units for close enough to the same price.

I once mounted a battery for my winch on the bullbar.
I parked it up at Falls Creek for a week & the snow shorted it out. Trouble was I had it in parallel to the main battery & no isolator = 2 dead batteries.:(

I thought to myself, "isnt there a conflict of interest in anyone 'doing' the moderators??":p:twisted: :wasntme:

a 2.75 exhaust, for $1200 the improvement is negligible through the seat of you pants and for saving any money. Maybe on a dyno it all adds to the power output but I'd rather my money back. It was on a rodeo, that was eventually chipped. I have heard on a 3lt patrol an exhaust it makes a huge difference. But I also feel people don't like to say the have blown money, so the answer to their mods is always "made a huge difference"

MUD Console - I like it, but it took a day of my life to earn the money to buy it and another two days of my life to install it.

It's good to have, just not sure that it's worth 3 days of my life.

Thats a shame about your experience with the lockers - I have them and they are the best thing I have fitted after the warn winch

why what happened? Amazing the **** we do. I know my under tray tank took it's fair share of skin, sweat, and bruised arm to plum so it did't leak. I do like it now though.

time taken to get it right just to hide the filler cap on a bush pig, it sounded like a good idea at the time though!

Not a mod as such but poly bushes instead of good old rubber, i have to cut the effers out with an oxy after they flogged out in less than a year of mild use. Great in the panhard rod but no where else.

I put in a full length cargo barrier & if I had to do it again I would put in a half one. Everytime I need to carry something long it now has to go on the roof racks instead of just dropping one of the seats & sliding it in :(

The answer to your problem is cut out the mesh below the height of the back seat so you can slide long stuff through ;).

Hot tip # 185634...

Dremel out some of the mesh in the lower portion where the seat back blocks it...

I had to do this in my D1 for the Engel....

Then you can drop the seat and slide it through...

Also makes it easy if the tailgate locks and you need to get back in there...

Also if u only have a handwinch which is in the back, your car's bogged with the arse end under water.

I would never again purchase anything sold, made or fitted by a popular 4wd company who's 3 letter name starts and ends with the first two letters of the alphabet.

Everything they have touched/fitted has been faulty or failed within 6 months and is still causing me problems 2.5 years later.....

The learning, trying and testing has brought so much pleasure.
My mods are usually well planned though.

Hi All

I installed a gauge to measure boost in the TDi Defender.

Now it's a waste of space, would like to replace it with a EGT gauge.

Hmmm

I think I am happy with every thing I have done on the old girl, it has been a very long term experiment to see what worked and what didn't. Really the what didn't are the bits that are no longer used as much as I would like. The biggest problem I have is now that I am in Qld all I'm doing is using it as a commuter and the only dirt it now sees is the 200m of driveway to the house.

I would like to change the suspension, when I initially set it up I did it with towing in mind, as I really no longer do that it is a bit stiff I would really like to set it up with much more compliant springs and greater articulation with adjustable King shocks.

Next time round I won't install a fridge slide on top of a set of storage drawers in the back, unless it's one of those "drop down" fridge slides (and that's unlikely at more than $600).

Makes the fridge too high off the ground (especially for SWMBO who is vertically challenged :wasntme:).

Will probably mount the fridge slide on the floor, and if I need two drawers, have a double height set of drawers next to the fridge (unless someone has already tried that and posts that it is a mod that they would not do again on here). :p
