Removing the roof on 85 County

G'day, The paint is starting to lift on roof? So to do the job properly, would it be easier to remove the turrent, have it bead/sand blasted, undercoated, painted then replaced?
Is it as easy as that? Any help or input is better than none.

It is not difficult, but is likely to take a fair bit of time and effort. If you remove the headlining, you will see the roof is held on by a large number of bolts and nuts all the way round. Simply undo all of them and lift it off. While one can probably lift it, because of the size, you really need two to do so. You will also have to remove the windows on the curve of the roof before painting.

Thanks for the quick response. Would I need to remove the headlinning, or could I turn the roof over & tape/seal the linning? No problems re the windows in roof? dont have any.

Need to remove lining to get to the bolts. Replace seal between roof n top of windscreen before you put roof back on. Closed cell foam strips with one side adhesive works just as good as land rover part number.

If your roof leaks this would be the time to derivet and seal her up!

The best tool to remove the plugs holding the roof lining on is a garden tool. It's a weed remover hand tool, hard to describe, but approx 250mm long, a handle one end & 2 prongs the other end with a curved bit in the middle, you tap the prongs gently under the plug & lever them out.

Thanks for that, what & or where are the plugs? To be honest I haven't even looked at the roof at this stage, it will be done end jan/feb,once its booked in for beadblasting & respraying.

The plugs hold the roof lining in place. There are rows of them & they hold the side linings as well. Not easy to remove.:(
