View Full Version : High pressure fuel pump error

Anyone experienced an error with the high pressure fuel pump?
Mine tells the computer it's not up to pressure and it only has 134k km On the clock. The warning shuts off the special programs and all sorts of stuff meaning you don't go anywhere.
Seems a bit young for this problem and wondering if there were any other unfortunates out there with the same experience.
2005 TDV6.
Thanks in advance.

Peter,
This has happened to a few of the vehicles around, there was also a recall for a certain VIN range, P008 was the LR number, I would ring & enquire with your dealer to see if your vehicle was within the range & has been or needs to be done.
Cheers

Thx and the fuel pump issue seemed to be a later model. There was a recall for that issue and this does not include my model.
I have called LR about it directly.

Don't tell me... their response will be "That's the first time we've ever heard about this happening!" :wasntme:

Had the fuel pump go in my 2008 TDV6, but it took them months to diagnose it correctly. Replaced the battery, main ECU, some wiring. Every couple of weeks the car would die with multiple errors, ususally at highway speed or going up a hill. No further problems since the pump was replaced.

Thanks guys and the story so far...
Computer suggests the sensor could be playing up. The pressure seems within range and there is no real way of checking as the sensor can not be checked or replaced independently of the pump.
As this is not the first time Shane (SBL) has had a sensor problem which confused the ECU into doing odd things (a RRS with a faulty oil temp sensor) so he is seeing what other checks can be done before we order the replacement bit$.
Will let you know what happens.

I had the same issue in my 2008 TDV6 HSE. Warning lights came on and I tried to reset it a couple of times. When I came to a stop there was no drive. reset it to get going and it was OK until i could get it to MLR. Computer fault code said fuel pump and they replaced it uner waranty as i only had approx 80,000 k's on it. I have upgraded to a new D4 HSE and believe problem has been fixed.

More information the pump pressure is within tolerance 23k psi and the low pressure side 7psi.
The fuel pressure regulator error high.
So the simple answer replace the pump.
Shane is going to back test the ecu and eliminate as many issues as he can.
Any advice is welcome.

Peter,
I saw a new one on eBay the other day from All 4x4 at Kotara, NSW - but it is for MY07 and later models.
(EDIT) Sorry Peter - it is for the later models than yours... Maybe getting one direct from UK might be cheaper?
Cheers,
Rob

This was part of the recall range - a different problem to the OP. A faulty designed front bearing on the EURO 4 HPFP. They probably didn't do the latest recall work on your car, announced in November 2010.

That was the one I pasted the link to last night - and removed the link as it was for the EURO 4 HPFP.

Just had my 2008 TDV6 HSE fail on holiday and stumped up $1100 for the flatbed home with the family after a huge fuel leak. It's in for repair today and turns out the leak is from the pump.
The repairer is sussing out how to get the pump out without taking the body off! Anyone know if the body has to come off for replacement?
I mention this as I also had the numerous faults coming up which started with a transmission fault and ended with no drive and the car down to the stops. Locking and waiting till the park brake light went out then starting up again usually cured it.
From the above it sounds like the two could be related.

Body does not need to come off for repair.
It will log various faults from air suspension to terrain response to auto transmission etc etc.

Sounds about right fault wise.
The link to the ACCC website PRA above quotes a range of VIN which mine falls within but when I called my dealer and LR customer care they said it didn't ?
I guess the ACCC quote a wide range and then you need to confirm with LR.
Glad to hear the body doesn't need to come off and hope my repairer knows it too.

The ACCC will quote what LR have supplied them, which will be what is on the recall note, no use adding more numbers that do not need to be done!!
If your VIN is within the recalled range then it may have been missed, if the HPFP has failed I would ask your dealer (as a dealer must perform warranty work) to submit a PCR to LR on your behalf & let them know that your vehicle is within the range & for whatever reason, was not included.
Get your dealer to print off the recall notice & to check while you are there & be polite, let the dealer help you as long as you help them.
The response will take a few days to come back but be patient.

I've had LR customer care, a dealer and a LR specialist repairer dispute the VIN range quoted on the ACCC website and tell me that my vehicle isn't affected.
Is there a reason not to trust what they are telling me? Or has the ACCC just got it wrong? I have to say LRCC and the dealers weren't giving much away!
I'll go up to the repairer tomorrow and see what's on their computer.

Apologies for not getting back sooner my work takes me out of country regularly.
The problem was the pressure sensor. It looks like it fused the wiring over a period of time when the vehicle had a slow coolant system leak from the top of the motor. The pump sensor is at a low point and the coolant collected and shorted out the wiring.
So the pump is possibly quite OK which is why the readings were all within tolerance and the computer still said "No". I will send a photo when I can.
The interesting thing to note is that the fuel economy since fitting the new pump is now better. I was a bit amazed to see the average consumption for a trip from Brisbane to Gympie tobe about 8.2 l/100km and at one point of the journey it was 7.9.
The lesson is to get any water issues fixed ASAP especially if they are at the top of the motor as this was not a cheap fix.
Thanks for all your advice and post a picture of the damaged part when I get a bit if time.
Cheers PK
