View Full Version : Parking sensors turning off when trailer is connected.

I have a Touareg that turns off parking sensors when our trailers are attached.

I used the D4 2012 to tow both of these in the last few days, but yet the parking sensors still work (trailer lights are led on both trailers and work fine). Found I could turn down the annoying noise with the radio volume controls.

Is this normal ? If so....the LR technicians buggered that one up.

Yep!

Dummy loads matching incandescent globe current draw need to be fitted. A search for LED trailer lights should reveal plenty of discussion and options.

Here is one solution.

I have mine fitted to the D4 so I can tow other trailers with LED's

Same as Mowog! The little box works a treat.

Hey Mowog,

Where is it fitted on D4? I have D3 and was thinking about mounting it for use with hire trailers from Kennards etc.

Cheers

In my D4 its in the left hand rear compartment. This the side where the tow hitch is stored. The switch to turn it on an off is mounted in the trim just above it.

I have a Kaymar rear bar and having it fitted to the D4 it turns off the parking sensors if it is turned on.

Ditto the Linear electronic design unit, have mine mounted in the tow hitch space also. Great piece of kit.

I have a special box on each trailer to make the LEDs work for my touareg.
I would have thought that would have been enough...I guess not.

I actually have that fitted to each trailer. LEDs work perfectly on both cars, just parking sensors don't turn off on the disco.

And the car does more than just turn off the sensors if it thinks there's a trailer there, so its possibly not altering the gear changes, activating trailer stability etc either?

Actually my trailer light on the dash does not come on either during towing.
Plugged the little 6x4 with incandescent lights.....the same result.
Think I might need to drop into LR.

Not being a D3/D4 driver, I am still trying to work out why the question about parking sensors was answered with info about LED lighting.

I know about PulseShunt and similar devices but what does it have to do with park sensors?

With the LED lights the vehicle does not detect a trailer is coupled to the vehicle. Hence no flashing trailer light on the dash and no turning off, automatically, of the parking sensors.

Do you have the correct landrover trailer wiring room fitted or something installed by an auto electrician. When a trailer is fitted with incandescent lights or LEDS with an adapter box the car should sense the trailer and disable rear park assist, switch off car reversing lights, light up the trailer lamp and switch on tow assist on a D4.

If you have an aftermarket loom that is spliced in these functions will not normally work.

What do you mean, Garry, is there a non-standard trailer wiring loom option?

My car did not have a trailer wiring loom fitted when I bought it - initially I was thinking I could have just sent it to the local auto elect (or done it myself) and told them to wire it up - most likely they would have just cut into the cars rear wiring loom - sure the plug would work and the trailer lights would have worked but it would have bypassed the cars computer systems so parke sensors etc would still be working.

After investigation it became clear that I needed the correct Landrover loom that integrates everything - was supplied by a member here - this loom links to the systems and everything works as it should.

Oh, a D3, Garry? The OP is regarding a 2012 D4, so it'd have to be OEM wiring? My '11 D4 came standard with 5 and 7 pin plugs...

I needed a 12 pin flat plug for my van so I removed the UK (white one) plug and loom, constructed a bracket and spliced the 12 pin into the remaining 7 pin (black) plug wiring and then connected the others wires that I required. The whole thing works 'a treat'. When the van is hooked up the D4 recognises it and cancels the reversing sensors and D4 reversing lights when reverse is selected.

It's factory fit.
