G'day all,
So my 1978 SIII 88" is finally on the road and rego'd after two years of rust repairs, swearing and steering rebuilds. Big thanks to the boys down at Land Vehicle Spares.
Anyway, having not had it registered, I'd never driven it more than a few hundred metres. After picking it up from Silverdale, I drove home, stopping to check for leaks after about 30 mins of driving. Sure enough, a trickle of nice clear EP90 was dripping off the bottom of the transfer case.
I opened up the centre seat box, and oil was pooling around the cover closest to the drivers seat(see photo). I pressed the plate and beads of oil were being sucked in and out along the edge, so it was definitely not sealed properly. I replaced the gasket and sealed it with loctite, drove around a bit to warm it up, no leak on arrival back home. Next day I drove it to work, no leak. Drove home, leaking again.
My question is, is it just this seal, or is there a bigger issue afoot that's causing pressure to build up in the transfer? I suspect my transfer case output oil seal is gone (based on the oil on the handbrake housing, though this appears to be a very slow leak, I've never seen any oil drip off it). I also have a sneaking suspicion that the seal from the gearbox to the transfer case may be gone, allowing oil to migrate from the gear box to the transfer. Will replacing this seal stop a build up of pressure in the transfer case, or should I install a breather somewhere on it?
