View Full Version : 101's and lightweights ?

Curious to know... Does/has/can a half ton light weight (have also seen them referred to as "air portable") fit on the back of a 101?

Obviously a crane or some really big ramps might be required, just wondering if it was ever a done thing.

Also along a similar vein, and somewhat hypothetical, would a light weight be able to be transported on a No.5 half ton trailer?

Re: 88" LW into a 101"

Width would be ok, but I reckon it'd be too long.
(No idea really as I haven't measured, but still wondering why you'd want to.????)

Dave,
The lightweights ended up heavier than the series it was meant to replace.
The overall dimensions were smaller. They are a little over 1.2 ton. The 101 is designed to carry 1 ton. Should be able to to do it but I wouldn't risk it. I wouldn't think the original tub would take the load concentrated on four points.
Now, if you made a custom tray designed to support an "air portable"....
Hmmm..... Landrover recovery truck.

I need another 101 guys.

Thanks Sleepy and Mick.

Initially I was theorizing about flat-packing a FFR softy onto a 101 for cheap freight/transportation... It seems Mick has unknowingly developed a habit of diverting my interest to more obscure LR vehicles!
However, now I am thinking of SWMBO "purchase excuse options" like 101 base camp with LW day drive vehicle... Or as Mick said 101 recovery vehicle...

So how does a 1/2 ton named vehicle become 1.2 ton? Did someone put a / in the wrong place?

Your mission, Dave, should you choose to accept it......
I'm looking at getting one now. The one I told you about. All hush hush and on the QT. Don't tell ANYONE about it. Concentrate on helping me get that over.
We could bring yours and Sleepy's lightweights over with it.

Actually, after further thought, a 6x6 Perentie would make a better Landrover recovery vehicle. They can carry 2 ton.

Now you're talking Sleeps.

I have seen a Perentie on the back of a Mog. That was going up Sydney Road Parkville I think. It was a while ago. The memory is a little hazy on location.
I have also seen a Mog on the back of a Mack.

Are you talking about buying another 101 here or getting yourself a lightweight?

I am making enquiries about a UK 101 at the moment. I hope we are not both checking out the same vehicle... LOL!

Mick covets all 101's. ;) luckily they didn't make a Mercedes powered version, he'd have to knock down his house. :lol2:

Probably are. I challenge you to a duel.

No challenge required Mick, it's yours!

I have a really good feeling that mine will find me when it's ready.

In saying that it looks like a nice enough unit, let me know if you bail out.

12.5 K he is dreaming for a unrestored studebaker.
All aust studebakers were 1945 build and the one in the add lacks the correct features for a early model.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/01/1406.jpg
the above jeep in the studebaker is a long wheel base model of 101 inches.
The width of a standard studebaker tray is 7ft.
Note later production 101s and all Ex Aussie army ones are legal for a 1.5 tonne payload on or off road.
A fully stripped 101 is 1,5 tonnes weight.

He wouldn't send me the photo's I requested. Said he would but didn't follow through.
From what photo's there are, it's pretty filthy inside.
My main concern is rust in the chassis. Couldn't see if there was or wasn't.

Hugh from the National Military Museum in SA was looking at bringing in a number of 101s/lightweights from The Netherlands very recently, it may still be going to happen. The lightweights were LHD ex-Danish Army ones built to NATO diesel specs.

Be very rare items over here and given the 30 year rule LHD ones can be registered here.

If your serious it may be worthwhile tracking down Hugh and see whats happening. He is bringing in some trucks.

Thanks anyway Diana,

When my 101 finds me it will be a right hand drive! Although I am really tempted to take a risk on this one Mick has let go... that price is pretty hard to ignore.

Am wondering if I can get my pommie mate over there to have a close look at it for me and maybe organise a PPI. Can anyone offer suggestions on what I should ask a non-LR/101 person to look for (and perhaps photograph) if he can get to it?

Also, say I was to go down that UK import path... what sort of things should I get done before it gets freighted and what parts/consumables should I be trying to source and ship with it?

Appreciate any guidance/comment,

Hoo Roo, Dave.

Dave,
Want to share a container?
I think for most of what goes wrong with a 101, it's either small enough to post from the UK or can be sourced here.
You might want an extra set of wheel rims to modify to take a wider, more easily sourced tyre (assuming you would want to keep an original set of rims).
There is a fellow on this forum who wants a set of 101 axles and rims. You might throw a set in for him.
There are some chassis part reproductions I can get in the UK which would be handy to have as spares if the chassis starts to rust.
Also an original winch might be worth getting.

Could be a goer Mick... I might take awhile to get there though... A few projects to finish and then some unused assets to liquidate. Mrs will be VERY unsympathetic about me purchasing vehicle number 9 without selling at least 2 or 3 of the others! Definitely going to start making UK enquiries though.

You wanna plan a trip over as a part of it? I'd love a couple of weeks pillaging the dismantlers over there for RR/LR accessories... We could help some mates out and make a bit of coin back here with the right stuff on ebay!

I cannot help thinking that you will do better buying in Aust - 101s come up regularly - some over priced in my view but some priced quite well,

If Mick stopped buying up 101s there would be a few more available :wasntme:

As for the 101, it was running and AFAIK a 12V GS it is under cover. I will get some images when I'm out there either this weekend or next.

PM me and I'll forward the contact.

There is an ex RAF 101 for sale in Melbourne - will be a bit expensive but is in top condition. There is/was a Aust Army 101 for sale in Sydney about 6 months ago - runs and registered just needs a bit of TLC. There is a 101 in the upper Hunter valley that may be for sale - I have no details. Two years ago a lhd 101 was purchased in Goulburn for $1500. It has since changed hands for a price unknown and is now in Canberra.

I regularly see 101s for sale in the 4wd advertising magazines.

I bought mine through ebay.

They are there, you just need to keep your ear to the ground and monitor the usual sites.

If you have your heart set on a Brit 101, go and speak with Anthony Johnson.

No deceptions.
Was chatting to AJ on the phone.
He asked me if I was ready to sell him my 101's yet.
Of course, I said no.
Then he asked me if I knew of any for sale.

That one in Harcourt?
I have it's image as the wallpaper on my computer at work.
So it's still for sale then.

Here's a plan.
Buy the desert camo one. I think I know someone who will store it for a few months.
When the paperwork comes through, I'll buy one and we can share a 40' container.
By that time, I should have a Kyneton property and you can store it there for a while.

Sounds good Mick, now all you have to do is get an extra 20K from your bank and pay for it all! Oh and throw in to light weight FFR's for fun!!!

Still have to ring the number Diana got for me first... Got busy and forgot all about it today.

Now what's all this talk of deception?

Just to chime in on the action. What info is there in regards to importing from the UK, ie approx $, customs etc. Not including the sale price of the 101.

Would be interested in sharing the costs, although, as I've (we've - the missus) have just bought a block of land in Melbourne, at the moment I'm doing the research 'thingy'.

Anyway, keep us in mind if there is a chance of importing from UK.
