Hi guys

Just bought a set of gaiters for my 2000 D2 manual from "The Tuning Shop" on eBay ... about $30 delivered.
Can you please point me in the right direction to find instructions to remove the old ones?
Thanks42830

Hi Disco EMU,
Fairly easy job as I did this myself....

You need to unscrew each of the knobs on the sticks to completely remove them - handbrake is the same but may just pull off as apposed to screwing it off.

Be careful not to lose the round rubber ring which holds the gator to the knob, you'll see what I mean when you take it off.

good luck with the handbrake, it was a pain in the proverbial :-D

Cheers,
Lp

The gear lever get a stanley knife if you want to and cut a slit in the gaiter, near the bottom, then with you index finger feel for the little plastic clip on all 4 centers of the bottom frame and unclip and lift. Only to prevent breaking the plastic retaining tang as they age and get brittle.
pull the gaiter up along the gear stick shaft you will see a bolt holding the 2 parts of the gear lever together, unbolt the gear lever stalk to the gearbox stub stalk.
Now pull the gaiter over the gear knob.
You will see a rubber o ring, this is what hols the gaiter on under the gear knob.

The transfer knob, again unclip the base from the console, then unscrew the transfer knob spinning the gaiter and bottom frame along with it.
Then slide the gaiter over the knob and remove the o ring .

The hand brake, pull the top facsia cover from the electric window panel, it just pulls straight up.
Now you need to press up and down on the upper and lower edges of the hand brake gaiter, the gaiter is attached to some spring steel. Pull say top down to unclip the top and the pull the bottom up and out.
The bottom spring metal is not joined like the top, you should be able to squeeze it sideways
The gaiter is then pulled over the hand brake handle to reveal the 0 ring retainer.

Remove old gaiters from their respective frames. Use a contact adhesive and coat bottom both the plastic frames and the respective edges of the leather gaiter. Allow to get tacky then fold the leather edges under to glue to frames.
The hand brake cable is trickier, fold the gaiter around the metal spring and coat with contact ,when tacky, fold and stick

Yep It makes the insides look really shmick
Now you need to get the leather steering wheel cover and the leather cover for the centre cubby box lid...Then it will look even better. I have just done all of them and am very very pleased.

I did that, though I got a brand new steering wheel for my D1 rather than just a cover, and it does make the interior look a whole lot better.

At $100 in total for the handbrake and hi-lo lever gaiter, the cubby box lid and new steering wheel, it was a cheap facelift.

Im about to do this "clean up" to my car today, So you dont need to lift the center console out at all to do this ????
Mine is an auto and really only the handbrake is crappy but will do both.

All up about 90 minutes for 2 cars... Wifey forgot to mention that she bought a set for her car as well :) That were in worse condition then mine.

Wifey very pleased with the job and now all I need to do is wait for the leather steering wheel cover to turn up, already did the center console lid a month back.

Thanks for the tips and yeh the handbrake fiddly PITA

That first link is weird. Why TD5 not V8 (same wheel) and why uP top does it say for freelander. Cheers
