mad idea, but is it possible to swap out all the running gear of series vehicle for more modern deisel vehicle parts? i love the series three but want a more driveable vehicle? maybe a a hilux or or a small 4cyle deisel of some type.

I always thought just dropping a 200Tdi and gearbox in was ideal, but you are still left with trans case, old diffs and drum brakes, which to me seems like a limitation.

maybe swapping the running gear of a disco in full and shortening diffs is an option? or perhaps just different diff centres in the series diffs and a disc break and power steering mod?

over to the brains trust?

I had a LWB Series 2 with FJ40 Front & Rear axles & was a REALLY easy conversion.

My ideal project would be a series 2 swb body onto a 90" cut/shut rrc chassis /running gear

barring that I would, while you can still get a cheap one, buy a rusty BJ70 and install BJ70 complete running gear into a shorty.

you get a 4cyl turbo 13bt 3.4 l diesel which are bulletproof, a 5 speed & bulletproof transfer case and 4.1 final drives with discs on the front.
they are the last leaf sprung model before toyota coils so easy to install into a series 2.

I have most of the bits stored to do that to my IIA 109. Toyota axles, Rangie gearbox, spare 3.9 engine (still in my RRC, but will be coming out). I hope to not park it like that once I am done though!

This is very close to what my ute is.
SeriesII 109 tray, 3.9, ZF/LT230, LC60 axles. Its a good conversion, but needs a bit of modding to the chassis and body to work, its basically setup like a Stage1 now. Actually, the Stage 1 chassis is a much better starting point for it all, by a long shot. I would however recommend with all of this a conversion to a LC60 Power steering also as it makes that part a lot more straight forward.

On a more serious note than my last post.

This thread has given me some food for thought about my '79\109 panelvan now. I have been told the old Land Cruiser FJ45 transfer case is a seperate unit, anybody know if this is correct?
If so, that fixes my dilema about grafting the old Landy case onto a Daihatsu 5 speed gearbox. ( Will have to run 2wd until I get that sorted.)
Only thing of concern then is, can the old S3 front and rear axles cope?

BTW, Slunnie, nice I like it.

Thanks Shorty!

I'm not sure about the LC45's, I didn't think they were divorced transfers, but thats not to say much.

2 that do have divorced transfer cases (NB: this is an I'm pretty sure, but not 100%) are the Suzuki Sierra and the MQ/MK Patrol. The Patrol should have correct offset shafts to suit Rover also.

Thank's Slunnie.
Hopefully this week will see the first fitting of the Daihatsu engine and gearbox.
Then comes all the measure 3 times and fabrication for which ever t\case I can find at the local "open air auto mart".

Photo's to follow in a seperate thread of course, or it didn't happen, as per the rules.
