So I am now in the market for new Tyres. I have a set of bfg km2 which have been great however slightly undersized from the size quoted and also were slow to get a hold of.
So the current selection list is
Another set of km2 however I might have to wait until they are in stock and will be at least an inch under spec.
Mickey thompson mtz
Cooper stt
All are 8 ply side wall but the only one in stock are the cooper which is really the only reason I am considering them.
All seem to have good and bad feedback so what really tells them apart.
If it matters I am after 315/75r16

I haven't heard very much positive about coopers but 8 ply sidealls may be better -
tyres in use around here seem to be BFGs, and are what I have been happy with for years
... pricewise I will be taking a look at Maxxis Bighorns next but I don't know if the size you want is available in them

Hey Iain,

I have been looking into tyres/wheels for my SVX.

After many months of deliberation I am about to order -

16 x 8 Dynamic steel rims with neutral offset

Mickey Thompson MTZ's 285 x 75 x 16 (33's).

This combination should just fit under the guards, not reduce any steering lock or cause any rubbing to suspension components on full articulation or not.

Only time will tell or possible another member that has this set up.

Cheers

Can only comment on the Mickey T's in 285 75 R16 as mine are fitted to a Disco (with Dynamic -25 8" rims) with arches, body and spring lift.
For a mud terrain, they seem to be exhibiting pretty good on road manners (good levels of grip in the wet and greasy stuff and feels direct over bumps and in corners) apart from the roar at highway speeds and have been wearing really well considering the kays I do and the thrashing they've been subjected to.
I would recommend and wait for them, and will be getting them again when these ones wear out.

I am fitting a set of Tibus portals so the wheel is a hutchinson beadlock for the Pinzgauer with a 65mm offset Hutchinson rims - Pinzgauer TD (http://www.pinzgauer-td.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=139332396)
I prefer these over the Mercedes G as they are a hell of a lot cheaper (about $550 per rim as compared with $1300 for the G rim) and they have the bolts that fit trim as opposed to sticking out.
Drover if you are interested in a set of steel rims with 0 offset I have a set of 6 King rims about 10 months old that are in pretty good condition (only one small dint in one rim and it has not upset the balance). I have a friend that is keen for the 265/75 BFG but as he has a Hilux he doesnt need the rims.
Should be available in about 8 weeks or so and I can do a good price.

If you're going portals, step up to 36s+, or it'll look silly. I think Brendan has his engineered for 37s or thereabouts but runs an inch or so smaller.
 Looking forward to seeing it!

So.....you won't be taking it to go shopping at Westfields. If you contact the RTA they will give you a map of all the low bridges in NSW.

I am going the small portals 1.16 to keep the gearing and speedo etc in line and the max tyre size they recommend is 35. It seems to also be a more commonly available size and will put the top of my headlight at 1190mm of the allowable 1200mm for registration in NSW.

Very good. How few people actually know that. FYI - its as measured from the centre mass of the headlight (for odd shaped headlights). Heavy vehicles are 1400mm.

You could always get a set of good tyres, and buy some Trep radials in 35"

Hey Wayne what would they have over the mtz? I do a fair amount of highway driving to and from trips so that is a consideration. I have also heard that the treps get a bit hard and noisy after 25-30,000 km.

The treps are slightly more open tread and hence more aggressive .
I have never heard of anyone complaining about radial Treps.
Everyone I have known that has used them won't go back, they are a brilliant all round tyre,Metz would probably be my second choice ,the treps are the quietest mud tyre that I have seen or should that be heard? They also give fantastic grip on wet roads.Ask Max(Tusker) what he thinks about them,he also runs them.
