Hi all
Qick question - can I get away with the standard Defender front flares if I fit 285/75 16 tyres (33" x 11.5") on 16 x 8 rims with 25mm offset?

It's on a 1998 300TDi 130 with a 2" suspension lift.

Thanks

Andrew

Hey Andrew,

25mm off set ???

+ or - ???

16 x 8 neutral off set, should work.

25mm outwards from standard offset

Yes! I have. I'm running 285/75 R16 BFG Mud Terrains with a 70mm lift on the front and a 40mm lift at the rear. The tyres on the front run just outside the line of the arch by about 10/15mm but it'd be a pretty pedantic cop to get funny about it as the lift makes it look right.... I think!! Have tried to add a pic but the archaic uploading system always causes me grief!!

+ = inwards or toward the centre of the vehicle.

- = outwards or towards to the outside of the vehicle.

If it is - 25 off set, then no. Mine has 33/12.5-15 KM2s on -25 15 x 8 Dynamic rims and they stick out a lot. I had 32/11.5-15 before and they still stuck out quite a lot.

First pic is the 33s, second is the 32s, same rims.

There is actually no need to mention what lift you have, they either stick out or not, lift will not change how far in or out the tyre sits. But your answer is as some have stated, yes they will stick out. I have 285/75/16 and they stuck out until I extended the flares.

I was going to edit my post to say I have a 2" lift, but after lambrover's post I won't. What the lift does affect is rubbing on full articulation. Mine rubs the flares on full lock at full articulation, but not slightly less than full lock.

Thanks guys, now looking at Macfamily's wagon, I might just stick with 16 x 8 with 0 offset.

Love sticking my ore in... There is need to mention lift because if you just lift the front without using an extended panard rod, the axle will move marginally to the right as the vehicle lifts.. so, you're left front wheel would be legal with a 3" lift, but the right pokes out beyond the arch by 3/4".. Using this principal, never let a cop overtake you.. or always overtake patrol cars!! ;) As for bigger tyres, DO IT! You know you want to!

My own 110 wagon (2014) has King Wheels 16x7 with a "0" offset, and I have 265/75R16 tyres, but they are also fine for 235/85R16 standard size.

You shouldn't fit 285s to a 7in rim, but 255-85s on a 0 offset sit ok with possibly some slight rubbing on the spring hangers at the rear under full travel, the standard flares cover them well enough.
