Hi all, I have had to re-register due to technical faults so I am now Defender mike formaly Disco mike.
We sold the Disco on Friday so its official. We have had the New 90 since the 6th January and have clocked up around 3000ks so far. I am exteremly impressed with its abilty off road especialy in sand. Our only gripe is the fuel capacity, consumption and guage. It uses more than expected the guage is out by 10 litres and it doesnt carry enough fuel for a decent trip. I am looking at long range tanks and have had a quote for around $1090 for a 45L under left side fit it myself at that price. Thats still not enough and would like to hear from anyone if there is a replacement main tank or other options. We are also getting a wind cheeta rack, roof top tent ,bullbar winch, and taking out the rear seat and fitting drawers.I am trying to find some LED spotlights as well.

The pic you have in your post isn't showing for me.. :(

I asked about long range tanks at Opposite Lock yesterday and was told that they only have the extra 45 litre tank that fits under the drivers side door.. it needs a new filler for it though so it's definitely not something that I could fit myself..

oh who am I kidding.. even if it could use the original filler no chance of me fitting it anyways.. :p

I agree though the tanks are too small.. I feel like I am filling up every two days.. :(

I met an Italian gentleman in a caravan park at Marlo, he told me he fit a long range tank in between the rear wheel arches in the boot of his 90, containing abt 210 liters of fuel. And he said it's quite common to do so in Europe.:D

I came across a lot of defenders in the uk & europe. I've seen it before but I'd stop a long way short of "quite common".

I'm pretty certain it's also illegal in many euro countries.

I had the tape measure out this arvo I could easily fit 60 litres on each sill beneath the rear side windows once the seats are out and the drawers are in.There are quite a few rota molded tanks available at 1000x 300x 200 size or near this. I could put it in for a big trip and take out when not needed and they are only around $250. Easily filled through the rear door and vented externaly. Idealy a big replacement tank would be the go maybee with so many new 90's around we may be able to convince a manufacturer to do some R&D and build one. Mike:)

Hi Sue ,

Next time you get down low and I mean 50ks past the light and buzzer see how much you can fit in the tank . Mine only takes 49 litres so its out by around 10 litres.:o

I've now driven 90's for the past 18 years and I've owned 5 over that period. There is unfortunately no legal way other than either the right hand size wheel arch or the underside of the two seat boxes to carry extra fuel. There is no space for more than 55 litres between the rear chassis members, so there is very little option for improvement there on a 90.

I've also seen the "home made" fuel tanks at a Belgian Land Rover meet and they are definitely not legal over in Europe and they'll never pass Australian regs. I'm not sue what local law enforcement's view would be on a 100 plus litre of flammable liquid inside the passenger cab (regardless of venting), but that would be a major no no in most countries.

The only options are therefore either the 2 Dolium tanks (35 and 45 litres) with their bespoke fillers, although I think they only import the right hand side one to Australia or the right hand wheel well one featured on a thread last week.

The only other option and one I've used on many occasions, is to carry jerry cans on the roof rack. The 90 will carry 4 (80 litres) in two double packs without any real effect on the centre of gravity, especially when the car is packed for touring. This is obviously not for everyone as its not easy to load the cans after filling them and siphoning the fuel with a piece of hose is not the most pleasant thing either.

I read a while back that Daniel from Mulgo might have a system for using the Dolium setup without cutting holes for new fillers and I'll definitely be interested if anyone (Daniel himself maybe?) knows anything about this option.

I'll do that this week for you Mike.. although I'm always terrified to let it go much past the buzzer and was only saying to my hubby yesterday that as soon as the light comes on I am searching for a garage because the car seems to run a little more sluggish and it feels like it really is at the bottom of the tank.. :o

Also on my to-do list. My 90 has the older style tank under the drivers seat that holds 45l. That combined with a 3.9 V8 running a rich tune means I get 200 to 250km out of a full tank!
Contemplating either an additional td5/puma style tank at the rear or relocating the battery and mirroring the current fuel tank under the passenger seat...
It will have to wait until funds allow.

Hi all,
I had one of the Dolium 45L tank installed under the drivers side.
I'm averaging about 850km with the two tanks.
I dont transfer any anything until the warning light comes on.

Can someone tell me what their average kms on their main tank when the warning lights lit up?

Around the 470-480 km for my 2010 D90. I ended up putting left and right tanks in. Total capacity now 145 litres.

I got about 11 km's past the buzzer and had no choice but to pull in for fuel as the next stretch of road was about 35 kms without a service station.. I got 49 litres in mine too..

Thanks Sue ,

I thought it was a 60 litre tank so there must be 10 litres still in there even if only 5 more are usable thats another 50ks.

I have purchased a new 90 as well. I haven't picked it up yet. Two weeks to go. I have been looking at Long ranger tanks and they have a 45 and a 35 litre tank but they cost $1000 each if you fit yourself. I think I might just carry a few jerries.

I got the same price for the 2 x 45 litre dolium tanks fit them myself. But for around $300 you can get a 60 litre tank that will fit on the sill inside ( rear seats removed). Legality same as carrying jerrys inside but takes up less room and can drain by gravity direct into the tank. Then the empty tank can ride up on the roof rack. They now have several different shapes available in a diesel only yellow.:)

I would rather pay the $1000 and have the tank out of sight and in my opinion a safer spot (in case of accident).. :)

At a sheet metal shop, they make alot of them apparently so I'm not the only one that thinks LR tanks are a rort.I didn't get fancy, just a rectangle shaped tank that fits under the drivers side sill and I'm going to fit a filler in the gape between the wheel arch and rear door. It's no biggy once you look at it.
