Can Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75w-90 be used in place of the Castrol bot 130 in the Puma gearbx. I've changed all the other tranmission oils but not sure on what to use in the gearbox. I don't want an expensive error. Any help would be great.

Not available here AFAIK ? (I think it's the old SMS-X or equivalent ?)

What would you suggest I use? Or should I stick with the dealer for gearbox oil changes. I've just got out of the dealers grip and I am enjoying the money I save

Hi Allan, AFAIK the Bot 130 has been superseded by Bot 328. I got my oil in from the UK when I ordered some other stuff: Britcar (UK) Ltd > LR006519 OIL - TRANSMISSION (G) (http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php?xProd=151858) at $26.26/l + freight.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Allan, I really don't know as I don't know what BOT130 is, I have no idea and the TDS I have is pretty rudimentary.

It just may be a fairly ordinary PAO/ester based gear oil with a slightly customised friction modifier package for the MT82, and that may be all it is.
If you're game I can suggest some excellent 75W-90's that have proven good shift performance over a wide variety of gearboxes.

In no particular order.

1. Motul Gear 300.
2. Castrol Syntrax 75W-90
3. Redline MT90
4. Amsoil MTG

The first two are dual rated GL4/5's but are yellow metal safe, the next two are lower additised GL4's.

I really like Gear 300 in the R380 and I've used Syntrax for 290,000km now in a Patrol (except for 3,000km with MT90 and the prior 90,000km or so with Fuchs 75W-90) with zero leaks, zero noise and excellent performance still @ 390,000km.

All four are dedicated manual gearbox fluids.

Hi Rick, if it helps the info on the back of the BOT328 bottle is:

SAE 75W-90
API GL 4

(Sorry if I'm stating the obvious! :) )

Cheers,

Thanks Tim, I have a TDS but as is common with these things it only has kinematic viscosities, VI, pour point, etc on it.

The really interesting stuff is all proprietary.

Allan,
i did an early life gearbox oil change on my Puma and went with the LR factory spec oil ..CASTROL BOT 328 ( this replaced BOT130M)
same LR part# LR006519 as before... not cheap .. $58/litre, but mine is still in warranty, so better use the recommended stuff...

this BOT328 is only available through the dealers with above part#
i`ve tried everywhere , including ford dealers ( new Focus uses the same oil),
but no luck... no ones imports it into OZ.. i gave in after a week of phone calls and got it from Trivett LR .. they had it in stock.

there`s a great sticky on how to do the oil change with pix on the

Thanks for the link and to all thanks for the help as usual. At least the oil can be baught at the dealer easily enough.

yes use the factory approved BOT oil, I know it is costly but there is only 2.4 litres of it, and a trans overhaul is way more expensive...

Hi being in New Zealand we are very limited as to what gearbox oils we can get The Castrol BOT 328 is NZ$120 (A$$90!!!) a litre from the dealer and as my puma is year 2008 and out of warranty I have looked elsewhere.

we can get this Fuchs TITAN in 1 litre containers:
SINTOFLUID manual gearbox oil for NZ$35 a litre trade and has the same Ford recommendation as the Castrol BOT : FORD M2C200-C/C2/C3

Any opinions please!!!!!!

Thread Drag from the Depths

Hypothetical question

So if one was to have 15L or so of Syntrans Universal 75W-85 in the shed.
And then one was re-grading from an R380 defender to a latte MT82 defender.

Would one keep the drum of said Syntrans GL3/GL4 75W-85 oil for MT82 use?

Or would one be better off moving Syntrans on to an R380 owner and buy the specified GL4 75W-90? ie BOT328 or Motul Gear 300 etc etc?

Rick?

Anyone?

Thanks Muchly

Steve

Hmm, not sure Steve.
BTW, congrats on the purchase.

BOT328 is a 75W-90 and is Land Rovers specified brew.
Ford have been through a number of different blends for their version of the MT82 in the Mustang, I think the current oil is for DCT's, can't recall what the specs were.

I've seen Nissan for one go from a 75W-90 to a 75W-85 to get better shift quality in cars like the 350Z.

FWIW the oil used in the 3.2l BT50 that is my new work ride is Castrol BOT350 M3.
Castrol's aftermarket recommendation is Syntrans FE75W.
It's ATF thin ! In other words a lot lighter than Syntrans Universal.

Fuchs recommend Titan Sintofluid 75W-80, again a lot lighter than your Syntrans 75W-85.
They also recommend the same oil for the MT82 in the Deefer !

If that's the case the gearbox is pretty oil tolerant.

Rick,
You know what you say goes ;)
Should I try it and see?
As you say unlikely to cause damage? Shift quality will determine ongoing use?

Rick,
You know what you say goes ;)Great, pile the pressure on Steve ! :D

I'd use it, Syntrans Universal is Volvo trucks approved for 3-400,000km so isn't any slouch as far as fluids are concerned, but it does get caned in the R380 thanks to the heat retaining cast iron case and small fluid capacity.

I'd take note of what the fluid you drain now looks like, how much Fe is on the drain plug magnet and then run the Syntrans for 20,000km then drop it and compare.

BTW the factory fill in the US Mustang MT82 is Castrol BOT341, marketed there as Motorcraft Dual Clutch Transmission fluid and from what I can work out is that Castrol Syntrans FE75W mentioned above.
