I'd like to apologise to the driver of a Nara Bronze D4 who waved to me (white D3) this morning in Wahroonga.

Totally stock looking - took me by complete surprise so I didn't wave back.

Since its something you don't see every day, I wondered if it was someone on here?

Cheers,
Jon

Something you don't see much of now Jon.
I think it was the turn of the century before last, back in the days of Boy Scouts, when one of my scout leaders had a military style Landrover troop carrier (not sure of the exact name of the model).
Anyway, I remember he would always give the Landrover wave to fellow Landrover owners. You used to get a wave back almost every time.

I still make a point of waving to other Landrover owners, only its turned into a gidday, rather than the traditional wave.
Not too many respond though.

Cheers, Craig

I used to get the rover wave when driving the D1 then noticed the wave was rarely returned when in the D3.

Try hanging a caravan off the back this is currently working for me but then again could be a grey nomad thing

Happy waving

On a trip away last month I waved at every LR I came across. 3/4 of the way there I gave up for the lack of responses. The very next LR (white D2) that came along give me a wave at the last second -surprised the hell out of me such that I practically fell over myself trying to get one back to him. Not sure that he saw it - probably thought I was just another one of those D4 snobs!

Anyway, found this and thought it a good read about the LR wave:

Wave Etiquette - Land Rover Zone (http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f16/wave-etiquette-104513.html)

Sad but true Land Rover / Range Rover divers don't like to wave.

We also have Mini or 2 and Mini drivers are more likely to wave... When towing the van well some days you get RSI from all the waves... But strangely the more expensive the tug the less likely they will wave back. That includes Land Rover / Range Rover divers.

Quite a few of us up Toowoomba way still wave but your right it is becoming rare when venturing out of town.

I wave to a Landie that is kitted out for 4wding but no others - most these days are driven by soccer mums who have no idea what they are driving - it is just a car nothing more.

90% of landies sold these days are not used to maximise their off-road abilities.

As a kid and travelling in my dad's County 110, the wave was a guarantee and dad always gave a wave as well.

I've since bought a D1 and never bother with the wave - mostly because no one else does it. How do we bring back the wave?! The only disclaimer is, if I saw another D1 that looked like it does off roading, I'd give a wave still. It would be rude not to!

How do we bring back the wave?

Lets all simply start to do it again regardless of landrover model or set up. Acknowledge we have a common interest and I don't know how others feel but it brings a smile to my face when someone responds.:spudnikwaving:

I wave to the couple of D3's that I see in my part of Melbourne, sometimes I get an acknowledgment ... sometimes just a blank stare from the "soccer mum" driver, oh well I'll keep on trying. I did get a bloke in a Jeep come up to me in Thredbo a few days ago and comment that it was nice to see a D3 that looked like it went "off-road" - so that was nice.
And as I took a short break by the Murray I had a gent in a VW ask me if I'd tow him out if he got stuck ... he didn't need my help as it turned out, he had a good look at my D3 and seemed impressed.

Drive old landrovers.

When I drive my 101 I get waves from everyone - Landrovers, Nissans, Yotas - the lot. The younger the driver and the more Japanese the vehicle the more exuberant the wave. Though a lot of landy drivers do not know the 101 is a landie.

I never get waves when driving the RRS and when I do wave to other landies, I am ignored .

I try to wave to every Landie I see when travelling. On my last trip to the snowies over xmas I only got one response - a good looking convoy including a 101 on the way up from Tom Groggin (was that you garrycol?)

I don't bother around town unless its kitted up for off-roading, but usually try and look and if the driver is looking at me I'll wave. Doesn't happen very often though.

Jon

If it was a Series 2A in front, followed by a 101, followed by a near new high spec Puma 90 - then yes it was me :)

I am new to LR ownership - I have had my D4 for nearly one whole month. Since I have been lurking on this forum for a while, learning as much as I can, I thought it was compulsory to wave!

Since picking my car up I have been quite excited and have fanatically waved at all passing Landrovers. I have gotten a few waves back but not many. However, my D4, is stock standard, so I am probably do look like a soccer mum! And, maybe a few defender drivers a have been too surprised to respond.

I will keep it up, though I doubt my wife (the real soccer mum, will).

I've only known it to be a Defender wave. It's not just a wave but you look into each others minds & think;

How's your wife enjoying getting her knees frozen complaining about the A/C making her legs cold?

Or, enjoying that trickle of water that spills on your feet when you drive away after its rained?

Or, don't you just LOVE Lucas electrics..

Or, got that oil in injector harness problem yet? How's your driveline backlash going? Had the doors pop open on the highway?

It's so more than a wave, you're a owner & mechanic, its a unique driving experience & a pleasure to work on.

As nice as my D4 is I'd take back my 110 any day. I know if I was in my Defender on the side of the HWY, even if only making a phone call, there wouldn't be a defender driver that wouldn't stop to assist.

I'd stop! In fact I spent a few hours on my xmas trip digging a lone Defender out of the mud near Dogman's Hut, who had been stranded for some time because no Toyota's would stop to help.

When we were there we decided not to fight the mud and turned around. A couple of cars were nearby and it took them a while to get out of it in another area.

On driving back to Tom Groggin some 4wds had just pulled some sort of japper with a camper who had crossed straight across into the deep water and got drowned. The group rushed down to the river to watch us get drowned but were surprised that we only went axle deep :).

It is a great area and we waved to quite a few landies.

I don't think I'll be waving at RRS, L322 and D4 around here, none of them would know what I was on about and may take it the wrong way. Never fear the classics, Defenders and Series will always get the wave if I can.

In fact a 107/109 on West Botany Street last night got the double headlamp flash as I turned up Wickham St, dont know if he was expecting it either.

My DH waves to just about every Land Rover or Range Rover he sees, and I'll have to practice my wave now because he's bought himself a Defender110, and the Sport is now mine.

I do get a few funny looks doing the school run with the winch, spotties, mud tyres, snorkel, missing trim, and pinstriping, not to mention it's custom 'mud-that-won't-wash-off-anymore' paint job:D

Like RoverLander,

I live in the South of Sydney and wave at pretty much anything with an LR badge. My wife and kids think I am mad, but I wave anyway.

Mostly I get ignored, sadly because older model LR's and Discos are probably so surprised to see a D3 wave at them they can not react in time. I do not wave at RRS with 20in rims as there is 100% fail rate and I fell no affiliation with these owners, but everyone else I throw a hand at.

Now (thanks to SBD4) I have read the correct waving etiquette and technique I feel much more empowered to be part of those few drops that hopefully will make a river.

My main problem is that when I commute by car to work I drive a mini so every now and then I want to wave at Land Rovers but that would simply confuse things !!

I wave to other mini drivers which is mostly fine as about 30% are generally attractive women, 30% are probably gay men and the other 30% are people like me who bought a mini for their wives and are now forced to drive that (no great chore) because it is now too cramped for the kids.

Yours in waving,

George

I am so pleased to read a discussion about waves. :D The wife and children think I am a looney when I wave at any Land Rover going past, be that as it may it shall continue.

My concern is for the road workers though. :o With the many miles I travel up and down the east coast I find very few people acknowledge the road crews. :wasntme: I always raise the right hand index finger from the steering wheel, and always receive a positive response. :) The look of surprise on their faces though is disappointing. :(

Perhaps we LR drivers can bring back basic road etiquette; the acknowledging wave of thanks for allowing a merge etc. ;) We are a close knit community bound by our love of driving truly capable machines steeped in the lore of four wheel drives. We can show the jonny-come-latelies and less capable machines how to behave on the roads and reinforce for all our intelligence and integrity in choice of motor vehicle. :spudnikwaving:

Cheers

My wife mocks me everytime I wave and get no reply, which is about 90% of the time. I must admit now in general I just keep an eye out and wave back if the other LR driver does.

As I drive a highly modified D1, a D2a and a d3 about the same amount of time I have found that it makes little difference what model Discovery you drive. Modded D3 owners will wave when I'm in the D3, but not many of them around. D2 owners in general never wave, but do look, neither do Fender owners who seam to totally ignore Discovery drivers.

Maybe I'm being unfair to Fender owners given that most can't risk taking their hands off of the steering wheel because they handle so badly ...;)

cheers,
Terry

Lots of waves given and received in either my d1 or d2. To and from deefer and other original shape discos. Trouble is most of us know that most newer shape discos are driven by soccer mums and dads so we don't bother. I know if I ever went a D4 I would miss getting the wave. Cheers

Ps. Maybe in 10 years time it will change. I don't think so though. Part of the deal was that LR was quite rare. Not so any more.

You may be having a problem because you're giving a Discovery wave and Defender drivers are looking for a Defender wave.

Maybe you should give a generic Land Rover wave and see how you go? :D

When I drive my Defenders, I wave at all Land Rovers and usually get a wave from other Defenders or Series LR. Never get a wave back from a RR and only sometimes from a Disco.

When I drive my RRS, although I wave, I hardly ever get a wave back from anyone?
Some RR drivers actually look away! Hmmmm.....

The wave code has also been diminished to the raising of a single finger without the hand even leaving the wheel. This is possibly due to so much unrequited waving. The half hearted waver may feel less vulnerable or foolish if their wave is not reciprocated

The past weekend I towed our caravan with our D4 and got waves pretty much from every other vanner except from 3 other Discoveries and 1 Defender.

I tend to wave to most vanners regardless of tug. I find older Patrols & Landcruisers tend to be the best wavers - some of them wave profusely, plus their wives in the passenger seats get in on the act as well . But not getting waves back from fellow Land Rover owners was disappointing.:(

I will continue to wave regardless. Although as Mowog mentioned earlier, you can certainly get RSI being a vanner.

I too would welcome the resurrection of the 'wave'. Seems to me that it was more common back in the 90's when I had the D1. With the D4 I always look for a wave and will reciprocate if there's time. Think I'll now become a wave initiator to all LR and RR vehicles, so anyone around the Canberra area be ready to wave back!
