Can someone with checkerplate wing top protectors kindly measure them for me as below. Also, what thickness are they ?

Cheers, Murray

I'll measure mine at lunchtime if no-one else has already done it by then.
I've definitely seen more than one thickness. Mine are quite substantial compared to some that I've seen.

Sorry Murray, seems mine are custom made ones anyway that completely cover the top part of the guard - so follow the engine bay curve etc rather than being a straight sided shape like your drawing.
I reckon the thickness of the material is only about 1.6mm but dont have anything here to measure accurately.

The "standard" ones sold by most companies are 2mm chequerplate. Whether this is a true 2mm or not who knows but that's what they are sold as.

I know Grizzly Adams got a set made up through MR Automotive in 3mm plate, but I think their usual ones are 2mm.

Murray, I bought mine a decade ago (Brookvale Aluminium ??)

Anyway, there was the choice of three thicknesses.

I'm guessing the apprentice made mine as the cutout for the air intake is pretty wonky.

A ~ 1025mm

B ~ 317/320mm

C ~ 60mm

3mm thick.

Mine are the cheap set that Paddocks do. Hope it helps.

Tod.

A - 1125
B - 370
C - 95

distance from side 'C' to vent cutout is 452 and is 238 long

Mine look like that too (except bare - not black). Maybe mine aren't custom like I thought.

I made a cardboard template complete with aerial and vent cutouts and had a workshop cut mine out in 3mm chequer plate. Came in whole lot cheaper and stronger. Two wing tops and the bonnet came in under $200. Still have the template in the shed- if you want, I'll measure it up and send you the details....

Thanks for the offer, but I just need the basic size for now as I'll get a quote for laser cutting them.

I've had some really good and some really ordinary wing top protectors over the years. Attention to detail is the key here and the slight curve on the edges and the depth that the fixing holes are counter sunk to, all add to the overall look of quality. Most unfortunately looks rather "agricultural" while a select few companies creates a product you are willing to fix to a brand new car.

In view of all your other products Murray, I’ll definitely be in line when you start selling these! ( and if you make them in black...) :D

I couldn't agree more that attention to detail is the key. The curved edges make all the difference, the trouble is it's so much more work for me than just laser cutting a flat panel, but worth it overall.
It's a big decision to fit some of these, especially to a new car, when it involves drilling into those shiny new panels, there's no turning back so you want them to be good.

I don't know if or when I'll get around to doing some of these. I have so many ideas for products, but I'm a one man operation with one pair of hands and not enough hours in the day :(

IIRC I think I shaped the front curve on mine, I think they may have come with a bit of a fold, luckily I'm pretty handy with sheet metal work.
