View Full Version : When selling a bike....

....... does one let prospective buyers ride it?

It's always a worry as one can't always go with them. In this case, I can ride my other bike but the bike being sold (1300) would soon lose me on the 650.

Admittedly, the bike is insured for more than it's advertised at but.....

I'm in the same quandry at the moment. I want to sell my FJR and buy something slower so I dont kill myself at speed - I'll simply maim myself on a slower bike instead :). So what to do?

I am going to go on a case by case basis. If an 18 year old with a flat cap shows up, no way buddy! If its someone with experience or someone I like, I reckon you have to take the risk.

Yes - an issue but look a it from the buyers side.

If I am buying - if the seller said no ride I would be saying no buy - what have you got to hide.

Unless something extremely rare - there will always be another bike with an owner who will let you test ride. You just have to be patient.

1. Check licence and record all details, photcopy if you can. See if you can spot if it's a cheap fake. You won't spot a good fake.

2. Record rego no. of any car or bike the buyer came in. If he/she is a 'walk up', probably mate parked around the corner (suspicious).

3. Check any car/bike the buyer came in that the No. on the rego label (or that there is a label) matches the No. plate. Also that the back No. plate on a car matches the front (you would be surprised how often they don't).

4. If you let an unlicensed rider go for a test ride, you are legally liable, not just fines, but for civil damages if the dill hits anything (insurance will wipe you).

5. Put the money from the bike sale with the money you get from selling the Range Rover and buy a Defender.

That is probably your answer right there.

Win/win situation. Either it sells or it is stolen, either way you get the money.

take the asking price in cash as security before allowing a test ride - when they come back you can settle final price and complete paperwork or refund/abort.

His licence appeared real, his personalised no. plate matched his name, it was a near new car, and he wasn't a young rider. I rode the 650 and he took the 1300.

He may be more than a tyre kicker, he wants to do a REVS check.

The last two bikes we sold, the buyers paid by direct deposit without even seeing the bikes, only pics. One went to Perth and was fully restored by the buyer. This is what it looks like now (except for the fat bugger sitting on it):

Hold their license while they are on it and tell them you have no prob's as long as they sign a simple home made "Self Insured" indemnity.

Also tell them you are riding with them and they are not to lose sight of you in the process of the test ride OR break the law in any way.

That RZ500 is a Beautiful Monster of a Machine that you should have kept Ron. Just for a little longer so I could have found out about it and tried to steal it away from you!!!

P.S. Even "fat buggers" look good on them!!!

Mongrel! :D

We were invited to have a look at it when we were in Perth. It's now in the showroom of a Perth Yamaha dealer.

Do I need to take the vehicle & child back afterwards though?

Thread hijack alert - what's the etiquette when selling a car? Do you let them drive with you in the passenger seat? Same issues apply when it comes to accidents, insurance and speeding fines, etc, right?

I've sold a few cars, usually the buyer shows up in a car of their own, as I live up in the mountains. They generally take my car while their vehicle stays in my yard. If not, yes ride in the passenger seat. :) In rare cases (like rare or highly valuable vehicle) you drive! also don't cancel the insurance till after teh vehicle is sold!

Cheers,
Nick.

Splutter, splutter!

If I was to buy another, I'd have to sell the V-Strom, too. I's probably have another look at the new Super Tenere 2012 Yamaha Super Ténéré Home, information (http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelhome/651/home.aspx)

Maybe I'll see about getting the Strom front end sorted.

When I sold my DR650RS, I heard the 'buyer' cane it off up the street through the gears and thought, err, well, I'd probably want to try it out too BUT I was a little apprehensive. Lucky he bought it anyway:)

I agree it is a bit nerve wracking:eek:

Ron, Super Tenere looks good...
