Hi All,

I haven't finished the current project - a 1961 Series 2 LWB. But it's close so I have had my eye out for a SWB.

After asking around and looking at a few - I managed to pick-up this little gem:

1960 - Series 2 - SWB petrol
Fairey Over-drive
Dual Petrol Tanks
Free Wheeling Hubs

I purchased it from a farmer in country Victoria. The farmer (Rob) has owned it since he was 18 - and he's 45 now. He was happy that I intend to restore it and not break it up and sell it for parts.

There are some interesting details on the car. I have included some questions with some of the photo's.

Loading for the trip home:

At home - front view:

Drivers side - nice and straight:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Drivers side - what looks like an old filler cap, plated over - about head height:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Rear Drivers side:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Passenger side - some sort of plated cover on the roof line? I'm not sure what it is - there is nothing attached to the back of it inside the car:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Passenger side - what looks like another old filler cap, plated over - about head height:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Split tailgate (with tow bar):

Painted Fairey Decal on the rear of the car:

Selectro Decal on the rear of the car:

Passenger side petrol tank (the petrol cap is located underneath the passenger seat):

Passenger floor - 2 boxes of goodies that I need to investigate:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Drivers floor - 2 boxes of goodies that I need to investigate:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Air Vents - these are covered in a mesh. My 61 does not have this?
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Fairey Overdrive.
Adjustable drivers seat (my 61 LWB doesn't have one of these)
Inspection plate over the gearbox (my 61 doesn't have one of these - just a large circular rubber cover):
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Petrol tank - left/right switch:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Interior picture (including skirt panels to be re-fitted):
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

It also came with a truck cab top:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Engine Bay - is this air cleaner correct? My 1961 has the original air cleaner (large black cylinder with oil in the bottom). BUT this car does not have this type of air cleaner, and it does not have the bracket for one either.

I'm not an expert, but I'd suggest the roof is not original and the cab roof was probably what it left the factory with. I believe the Series II station wagons had big square windows in the side (not rounded ones) and the parts book seems to suggest they also had roof windows and a one piece door. The rounded non-opening windows may be Series III?

The air filter is an after-market one, the brackets for the original one probably having been discarded.

The inspection cover for the gearbox is correct.

My parts book does not mention adjustable seats, and none of my SII/IIA's have them, so they may also be an later addition but I'm not certain.

The bug screens in the front vents were fitted to military versions, but not mentioned in the civilian parts book. I do not know if they were an option, or they may also have been fitted by a subsequent owner.

I have no idea what the roof "filler"s are for, although if the roof is indeed a later addition it may have been modified for a specific task on its previous vehicle. I've seen holes for various racks, water tanks (camping and fire fighting).......

Are you going to keep it as a station wagon or go back to the cab?

What a great car! I have the adjustable seat slider in my 1970 S2a. I seem to recall that they were an option but I'm not sure from when. It actually wouldn't surprise me if it was original in yours. I look forward to seeing what you do with it. Very straight looking body. How's the chassis looking?

One of my 2a vehicles has the sliding drivers seat. I understood they were an option for the LWB vehicles. I am not finding it easy to get a replacement seat bottom and backrest squab for it.

Both my vehicles have the vent screens. They were added by me. I understood they were an option (they are listed as an option in the owners manual I have). I purchased one set from Sydney (and he told me they came from a Land Rover wrecker somewhere in Western Sydney) and the second set I purchased from Melbourne - they were painted military colours when I got them, they sandblasted clean pretty easily.

Hi All,

In answer to some of the questions:

* The chassis looks to be in great condition (from what I have seen of it, crawling underneath the car).
* The only rust that I have found is in the drivers foot-well and the door tops.
* It does have a nice straight body.
* The optional drivers seat is a bonus - although I think that it will always be pushed back in the furthest position!
* The mesh vents are silver - not painted by the looks of it
* I intend to leave it will the station-wagon cab on.
* I'm not sure what I am going to do to the ute cab - I already have a LWB Ute Cab, so I might sell it.

My basic intentions are:
* Completely strip the body off
* Fix rust in the foot-well & door tops.
* Replace anything that needs replacing (wheel cylinders, etc)
* Repaint everything.
* Recover/replace seats.

I am thinking about painting it a dark green, with the roof/wheels probably in a white/cream colour..

I have not made any firm decisions on colour yet - now I just have to finish off the current project!

Regards,
The Grey Ghost

PS - I am still thinking of names... Shorty seems to obvious - "Roger" is the current front runner!

Looks like a very nice find,
I would say the truck cab was originally fitted (there is a filler strip behind the seats to fit it) as the hard top looks to be 2A or very early SIII due to the dome head blind rivets for the corner cappings, later SIII's were pop riveted.
The hardtop looks to be off another veh
Also the tailgate is from a LWB series 1 :o so it has survived well, much better than the SII original.
Still love the SII land rovers, made before land rover went cheap with parts.
All the best in restoration

own thread and photos asap!? :) its the rules!!

I know where one (roof) was early last year (also in the riverland)
I will make some enqs but I dont know if
a) she will sell (wouldnt budge when I spoke with her "it was dads" but Im sure he didnt want it to rot away!)
b) how much
c) if still there..!

what part of the Riverland are you in?.. I'm at the western end of the Riverland, in the town with the Rock N Roll festival this weekend! (gee that'll be hard for people to work out won't it!)

Will try and find out what I can, (the roof was a S3 type roof "bubble" but had a couple of "mild" dents (which is very common) also one part of sliding rear window had broken glass. )

Hi All,

Well "The Grey Ghost" (another thread) is off to the mechanic, and I just couldn't wait any longer.

First step - drag "Roger" into the garage:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0942.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0945.jpg

Take off the door tops and door bottoms:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0946.jpg

Take off the tail gate (top and bottom sections):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0947.jpg

Take off the spare wheel and bonnet:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0948.jpg

Take off the front badge and grill:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0953.jpg

Take off the roof and canopy (not that easy on your own):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0954.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0955.jpg

Take off the windscreen wiper and windscreen. Also remove some of the seats:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0959.jpg

The rear tub has some sort of carpet/tar on it - this is going to be fun trying to remove it...
Any suggestions - I am using a wood chisel, and trying to be very gentle:

No mucking around for you is there mate?:p

What are your plans for the engine - are you going to have a crack at starting it before you strip everything out? If you aren't in a huge rush, I can pop over one day with a decent battery and see if that, some new oil and a can of fresh petrol can get her started...?

Hi Gavin,

I'd love to attempt to start it before I strip out the wiring.. Do you feel like a trip over next weekend? I haven't stripped out any wiring yet.

(I still have to take off the seat box, rear tub, floors, etc).

And I would certainly appreciate your help... I manually cranked her with the crank handle, just to see if the engine is turns over, which it does..

Regards,
Tom.

Next weekend may be a stretch - probably the weekend after if you can wait that long. If you get an itch to start stripping out wiring, that won't matter - I'll only need to jump a supply to the coil and starter, so as long as it is still physically sitting in the chassis, we can still have a go. Knock yourself out getting rid of the wiring if you like - that doesn't matter.:)

Just leave the radiator and hoses there as well - fuel tank can even come out if you want - we will be running the engine from a jerry can I would think - not sure what is currently in the tank, but I bet it will need a good clean out.

Cheers - Gav

Hi All,

Another big weekend on the tools - still in the deconstruction stage...

On my previous project - I didn't go as far as this, so it's all new to me.. Some of the nuts/bolts are almost impossible to get to!...

Seat-box out - drivers side:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0991.jpg

Seat-bot out: passenger side:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_0994.jpg

Rear tub off:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

The pile of DIRT after moving the car out:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1003.jpg

Deconstruction done:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1006.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1008.jpg

There is surprisingly little rust on the car - drivers foot well, and a few patches on the chassis (small, about 5c in size).

Now the cleaning (and chassis painting) phase starts!

The Grey Ghost

Ghost, can you solve a couple of mysteries for me please?

1. Can you post a photo of how that exhaust exits past your mudguard? Does the guard have a bit cut out to let the pipe pass?

2. Does the handbrake have a return spring in the mechanism? If so can you hook it up & post a photo?

Re: in-accessible bolts:

I didn't bother most of the time. I used an angle grinder.

When re-assembling, if I could not attach a vice grip to stop an in-accessible bolt turning as I did it up, I often resorted to welding an out-rigger on the bolt so I could do it up single handedly.

Geez Tom, you don't muck about!:) We'll see if we can't get the old beast running next week - would be fun to take it for a spin around your block like that...:p

2. Does the handbrake have a return spring in the mechanism? If so can you hook it up & post a photo?

There is a spring under the button on the hand brake lever; two return springs on the brake shoes (although early boxes had one spring); a return spring for the brake rod (the one between the relay lever and the hand brake lever); and a spring clip to hold the expander tappets in place on later boxes,

Hi Geodon,

Here are to closer pictures of my exhaust (sorry for the poor quality).
It exits behind the rear drivers wheel. The exhaust tip is pointed downwards and there is no cut-out in the mud flap. Hopefully these pictures help:

As for the hand-brake, I think that Charlie has answered your question? I have taken the following close-ups but I'm not sure if they will help:

Thank you Ghost!

Now it makes sense. The cut out in my drivers side mud shield must be an aberration.

I will wait till the tray is on, put new mud shields on THEN mount the exhaust. They look like generic thingies that the trailer factories use anyway!

re handbrake mechanism. I'm sure a spring fell off it when I took it off. There is one eyelet to attach one end but I can't work out where t'other end goes.

I will post a photo later

Hi All,

When I bought Roger I couldn't start or drive him - so it was a bit risky for a beginner like me to purchase an "unknown". According to the owner it had not been started for 3+ years.

Today Bacicat2000 came over and showed me his wisdom! Cleaned the plugs, drained/changed the oil, clean the distributor cap, cleaned the fuel lines, hand cranked the engine (without the plugs in) - and more...

The result - Roger PURRED like a kitten!!! Sounded FANTASTIC!!!

http://s1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/?action=view&current=IMG_1028.mp4

Thanks VERY MUCH to Gavin for all of his help so far..

I am still in the de-construction phase (it's going to be a long road) - for a small break I sanded/cleaned/clear coated the bonnet arm (BEFORE):

Hi All,

During the week after work I did some work on Roger..

The front springs & shocks are off.
I also removed 80% of the wiring - which is too far gone to save.

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1045.jpg

I was trying to decide if the existing door hinge pins are okay to re-use or not. I would like to (when safe) re-use as many of the original parts as possible. I think that the hinge pins have come-up fine after a few hours of cleaning...

Before:

After (including 1 spare new one left over from a previous project):

Hi mate - looking good, are you priming all the steel bits as you clean them up? It will save some more work when you come to paint them. A quick spray from a pressure pack with some etch primer would be the go.

Cheers - Gav

geodon
18th June 2012, 07:57 PM
May I suggest some phophoric acid rust inhibitor for your bare metal steel bits??

No need to spray, just slosh it on or even dip the small bits.

Being very acidic, it's quite an OK etch primer.

It lasts till you are ready to prime if the bits are out of the weather.

Just stay away from the POR15 stuff- it's waaaaay too expensive.

Hi All,

Yes - I will be painting all of the bits. Normally I sand/clean/paint on the same day but it was a little cold out my way on the weekend (<10c).

I will hopefully spray the items, with the paint that I normally use (White Knits Rust Guard) sometime this weekend. I will re-clean them before paint!

Stay tuned for more pictures this weekend (hopefully).

Hi All,

Well spent most of today cleaning the garage - there was piles and piles of dirt from all of the sanding/cleaning that I have been up to.

I re-cleaned the horn cover:

I then painted the horn cover:

Grey Ghost,

With the molasses solution I think you need to have the parts completely submerged. Having it only half in will possibly cause damage at the interface between the air & molasses solution.

It can take some time to remove the rust and you'll get black hands scrubbing off the residue but it's something that can be working away in the background while you do something else. Once removed, scrubbed & rinsed you need to dry it as quickly as possible and paint it before it rusts.

That reminds me I have a couple of rail spikes that have been suspended in the bucket for a few months.......

If you use hot water it works very quickly :D

As Colin says; submerge it completely and check at least once every 2 days,

Hi All,

Not a lot done this week - busy with work.

I did pull apart the horn and clean it - which took approximately 3 hours.

Hi Gav,

Does it still work - that's your department mate! :wasntme:

(I don't even know if it worked before I removed it).

I will try and get some pictures of the wiring loom, on initial inspection it appears to be in multiple sections (head-lights, main body, and another section).

Nice work GG!

I hope you don't mind me mentioning it, but I think it would be safer to replace the brake pipes with new bundy tubing. Once they get as rusty as yours, there is very little metal left, especially where the deeper pits will be.

Any pit in the pipe creates a stress-raiser, which means the life of the pipe will be quite short and if it leaks, you will lose all of your braking ability rather quickly

Tubing and new flare nuts are quite cheap as are bending tools; however; a double-flaring tool, which is essential, can be a bit pricey,

Hi All,

I completed some more sanding, cleaning and painting today.
I want to keep Roger as original as possible, and therefore will re-use as many original nuts/bolts/washers that I can. Naturally if they are rusty, bent or damaged then I will replace them..
A good few hours work done today..

Here is the BEFORE and AFTER - bolts/washers for axle strap plates:

Just for interest sake, the items that hold the fuel filler to the external filler plate should be 4 x 2BA bolts, only 3 x 2BA nuts etc as one bolt goes into a special nut that looks like a very small floor nut, I would say the previous owner has lost them or decided self tappers go in much easier, cheers Dennis

G'day Grey_Ghost,

You have a very good thread and it is really good to follow your progress. When you mention "sanding" is this done using a sandblaster? If not what are your sanding weapons of choice?

Lionel - here is what I use for cleaning:
1. Plenty of Time and Patience!
2. An electric drill with a red-plastic wheel (Bunnings $15)
3. A cheap bench grinder with a while brush wheel (Bunnings $38)
4. Lots of clean rags.
5. Before painting I then re-clean every part with a de-greaser + clean rags.
6. Time.

Here is a picture of the red plastic wire wheel and the grinder:

I hope that this helps.

At the moment I am in the deconstruction phase - sanding, cleaning and painting of small items. I am working out what parts need to be replaced and buying them (finances willing).

Looks great. Fantastic to see how thoroughly you're doing it. Impressive to see how original you are keeping it. On my rebuild at the moment...maybe I am cheating but I am planning to use a lot of new stainless steel nuts and bolts. It's for longevity and convenience I guess. I am happy leaving stainless bolts unpainted in places where they are not obvious. Then again, I could change on that and start counting rivets any day now....

My understanding is that stainless and aluminium don't go well together- apparently sets up galvanic corrosion due to their individual chemistry.
I could be wrong, but it's worth checking if you are going to use stainless where it contacts aluminium.... It's the aluminium that corrodes in this setup...

Stainless can also be questionable from an engineering viewpoint, and can suffer thread galling if the wrong grades are used. It's fine for bodywork fasteners, but I wouldn't use it for stressed components.

It is amazing what markings/symbols you find on things once they have been cleaned! There is writing on the barrel of the Radiator Hose clips which reads " UTILUX No. 1 Australia".

I also had the tyres removed from the rims and I dropped them off at the Sand Blaster. Interestingly the inside of the rims - the bit that you never see unless the tyre is off the rim, where painted in 3 different colours (deep green, deep red, and silver).

Radiator hose clamps, good quality type are very expensive for what they are, you cant buy the older style anymore well here in my part of the world anyway.
I do the self and same thing if I think the part is worth 5 minutes in the grit blasting cabinet;)
Methinks the canopy bolts are a bodge, I'm not sure if I have any down in my shed, if you are not in a big rush for them I will have a look, but ATM I'm replacing some items on my 110, and trying to get organised for the weekend away, cheers Dennis:angel:

Nice work Tom, loving the progress so far. I'm going to buy shares in the company that makes all the sandwich bags:D:D:D after all you will be buying a lot more before you are done.

My personal favourite are the bank coin bags, perfect for groups of screws etc, and they are free!!!

Will be watching with interest. I too have canopy bolts if you want some.

This is how I hold small screws & bolts (2BA size), I have a 200mm length of 20x3 aluminium, in it there are multiple holes a 50/50 mix of 2BA tapped holes and 2BA clearance holes, I then put them in my grit blasting cabinet, makes cleaning them a breeze, cheers Dennis

Though preparation of the surface is the only way to get a good paint finish.

Have you any pictures of your method in removing old paint and rust?
.

grey_ghost
8th September 2012, 04:18 PM
Hi Wrinklearthur,

I agree with you - thorough preparation is critical. On page 2 of this thread I have spoken about my very novice approach but in summary:

* Depending on how complex the part is - soak in a molasses solution for 2+ weeks. Wash off the molasses with hot water, and then...
* Use a bench grinder with a wire wheel to get the bad rust off
* Use an electric drill with a red plastic wheel
* Fine sand paper (800-1200 grit)
* Clean the surface with a de-greaser.
* Clean the surface with a clean cotton cloth
* Paint in a dry, clean area
* Leave 24 hours between coats.
I know that my method is not perfect, but I am very happy with the results.

Here is today's work (in part inspired by another thread)...

No. It has been overloaded. You might want to think about replacing it - you can straighten it, but probably easy to find them same one used 2/2a,3.

Hi Roger,
The paint that I am using is called - White Knight, Rust Guard - "hammered finish". I am using the colour silver. It is available from Bunnings - $15 a spray can.

Here is a link:
White Knight Paints - Hammered Finish (http://www.whiteknightpaints.com.au/specialty-paints/metal/rust-guard/topcoat/hammered-finish/)

I struggled with the question "do I remove all of the pieces of gal on the car, and have them re-galvanised?" If this was a money-no-object restoration I probably would have, but it isn't! :wasntme:

A lot of the existing gal was painted over (green) - so I am removing any old paint, and rust - returning the look to something similar to gal.. It's cheating - but I am happy with the resulting look.

Hi Gav,
Yep back to work today - I need a break from the car! I've done 4-5 hours on it every day for the last week, Although it's enjoyable, some of the cleaning does get tiresome...!

Hi Juddy,
The local brake shop charged me $96 to machine all 4 drums.
Plus $15 for a can of paint (I only painted the exterior).
I did think about buying all new drums, but the quote I got for 4 drums was $300 plus $50 freight.
If the brake shop had said: "these drums have already been machined, and you shouldn't do them again" - then I would have gone down the all-new route. There is the added bonus that the car is still original too.

Hi GG,

Is the green paint - White Knight rust guard as well?

Excellent work.

Hi Ozdunc,

Sorry for the slow reply - I have been interstate (and offline).

The green paint that I chose to use is Kill Rust - Deep Brunswick Green.

Not exactly a standard Land Rover colour - but I wanted something that is easily available. I looked at the White Knight green - but it was too bright for my liking.

our local engineering store has a product that is basically cold gal but looks just like gal! We used to use it to patch up where we cut/scratched/welded gal jobs. You can't tell the difference. I wish i could remember the name of the stuff.... It's not the stuff you get from bunnings, was a little more expensive but so worth it because you can't pick it from real gal dip.

Juddy - I am not sure what the next project is. I have already been told by SWMBO "There isn't any room left - you need to get rid of one before you go out and buy another"... I tried to explain that having only 2 Landy's is nothing compared to a lot of the members on here, but it fell on deaf ears! :wasntme:

Hello Grey Ghost,

Good work on 'Roger'. Your many photos bring back memories of the long hard road restoring our ex-mil S2A. I started on the tools in Dads' workshop when I was eight. Dad and I worked together over five years, long days and long nights, before the proud moment of achievment arrived when it was registered and immediately pressed into service for the Anzac Day Parade.
Like your work, ours too was meticulous with great attention to detail. Dad instilled in me the work ethic of 'Do it once by doing it properly, and you won't have to re-do it'.

Hi All,

Slow progress of late... But still some progress!

The bonnet now has some paint on it.. Here it is sand blasted:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1750.jpg

All masked up and no place to go:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1783.jpg

Painted:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1786.jpg

Front Grill - Sand Blasted & Painted:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1766_zps1f9fac68.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1787.jpg

I have pulled apart the tailgate - and only then did I notice that one of the tail-gate arms was cracked, and from the looks of it has already been repaired:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1763_zpsa41fbe43.jpg

I don't have a welder, or have a mate with a welder - so I thought that I might as well replace both tailgate arms... A quick email to pfillery and a very nice set arrive in the mail a little while later...
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1790.jpg

I go to fit the new items, and discover that the profile is completely different. The top one is the *new* one, and the bottom one is the existing one:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1794.jpg

This is a little strange because the new arms are identical to the ones on my 61 LWB... So these ones off my 60 SWB are different... Then again - we are talking about Land Rover!

So I took the damaged arm off to a local mechanic who repaired it for free. I will sand, clean & paint it:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1792.jpg

To the weather gods - please bring some nice weather to Melbourne so that I can enjoy working on Roger!

Regards,
The Grey Ghost

It's come up amazingly well - thanks again dfendr! I shall paint it ASAP (it's almost tempting to clear coat it) - as soon as we have a little warmer weather (forecast for next week).

That's it for today,

Must say you are making great progress, Ill have to get my act together and start on my LWB 59 model I have sitting at a mates place.
The tailgate you have, (think I may have said this back on page one) is from a series one LWB, that is why the hinges are different, they still fit :)
Looking forward to seeing the finished product

Yeah.....and often when I find things like this on my Landy I haven't even got a previous owner to blame. I keep coming across things I did to my vehicle twenty years ago and thinking "What were you thinking???"

Hi All,

Well - it's been a LONG week and I still haven't managed to remove all of the glue and paint from the roof.
I have been using a combination of paint stripper (man that stuff works well, but the smell/fumes) and sanding.
This is certainly the longest time that I have spent sanding/cleaning one particular item on the car.
It is starting to take shape though -
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1844_zps884f8e42.jpg

I decided to clean-up the tail-gate chains - before:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1662.jpg

After 2 weeks in the molasses solution:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1846_zpsc2247fb0.jpg

Then cleaned with hot water:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1849_zps08e6f9b5.jpg

And then sanded as well:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1855_zps6f192319.jpg

Front valance sanded/cleaned - ready for paint:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1854_zps25bfadd0.jpg

Tailgate - before:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1711.jpg

I removed the tread strips and did a little bit of panel beating.
I then sanded and cleaned it ready for paint:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1851_zps976d1336.jpg

Floor panels - sanded, cleaned and painted:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1858_zps78ccf2c0.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1860_zpsa54d87e3.jpg

That's about it - I've spent approximately 8 hours trying to remove the glue, with hopefully only a few more hours left...

Hi All,

The seat-box was in a pretty sorry state when I removed it from the car. The previous owner has butchered the passenger section when he installed a second fuel tank.
Basically the passenger tool-box area was cut out with a welder - leaving a big hole and lot's of rough edges.

I have removed the fuel tank for multiple reasons (poor fitting, poor plumbing, fumes in the cabin).
To put petrol into this tank you had to remove the passenger seat base, pull up the seat-box lid, unscrew the petrol cap and then poor petrol directly into the top of the tank. Not sure how legal/safe this set-up was...

The intention is to put the seat-box back the way it should be (roughly). With the help of a mate we achieved the below over the last few days.

Here is a picture of the seat-box when I removed it from the car:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1113.jpg

Here are some pictures of the seat-box after hours of sanding:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1955.jpghttp://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1957.jpg

First step was to grind back the poor cuts (you can also see the hole that was used for the fuel line in this pic:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1958.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1959.jpg

We already made a large repair panel for the bottom of the seat-box and painted it:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_1962.jpg

Made up a small plate to cover a hole that had been cut into the seat box:

Hi All,

Some more work done of the last week and a bit...

Hi All,

Well progress has been a little slow of late. I've been working 7 days a week for nearly 3 months now, and I have to admit that motivation has slipped a little!

Work is now back to normal so hopefully I will get back into the swing of things.

Here are the painted end-caps for the side skirts:

Hi All,

Well I managed some more work on Roger this week...

Here are the hinges for the passenger seat box lid - painted:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2144.jpg

Here are the two, married back together:

Here is the LHS mud splash panel, painted:

Here are the skirts - painted:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2140.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2142.jpg

There is a bracket that holds the end-plate of the skirt on. The brackets that I have are rusted and all bent out of shape. I decided to make some brackets to replace these.
Here is the original & the one that I made up.
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2161.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2162.jpg

I noticed that on both skirts, at the front of the skirt - the aluminium around the front most hole used to bolt the skirt onto the car - has small cracks in the aluminium. I assume that this is just fatigue on the metal.
Having no welder (or skills to use it) - I decided to make up a small aluminium plate that I pop riveted over the affected area to add some strength.

Here are the end plates assembled !!
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2168.jpg

Here are the nuts/bolts for the skirts - before & after sanding/cleaning:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2156.jpg

Next job is to re-assemble the the brackets for the side skirts!

It's amazing how much time all of these job take up...

Lucky I am not on a time-table :wasntme:

I maybe able to help there. Do you have the part numbers for those brackets?
There are a bit of a mixture here and the P/No's can narrow it down to the correct ones.

Well, I got to see first hand today how much detail is going into this build, and I must say, it is coming along very well. I'm sure Tom will be along with a few pics and details of what went on today, so I won't steal his thunder.

I was also lucky enough to take The Grey Ghost for a spin around the block today, and I was impressed with how well it went for a car that old. The engine runs as sweet as a nut, and it hasn't had a thing done to it. It is the first decent drive of a Series in 15 years for me, and it really makes me want to get stuck into my Series III, but it will have to wait a while longer.

Thanks for the drive:)

Cheers - Gav.

Hi All,

Well yesterday was certainly a BIG day, thanks entirely to Gav..

Firstly - a week ago I took my tub to the sand blasters, as I honestly did not fancy paint stripping the entire thing myself.
It was a Christmas present to myself - getting somebody else to strip the paint...
The main reason why I took it there also was because of the glue on the floor of the tub.

Here are a few before pictures:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2151.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2152.jpg

The tub had the following stickers on the rear of it:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2137.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2138.jpg

Silly question - I don't suppose anybody knows if I can get replacement stickers for these? I have had a look on the net but was unable to find anything. Worst case I will just have to re-design them myself.

Here is a picture of the tub, after coming home yesterday:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Unfortunately the main reason why I took the tub to the blasters (the glue on the floor) is still there... The sand blaster was unable to remove it... So it looks like I have hours of fun in front of me to remove it...

Once Gav arrived at my house the real fun started!

Roger's heart is now out!
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2184.jpg

Note in the above picture the hole in the block... The Welch Plug/Core is stuffed, which was the main reason why I was taking the engine out.
So the plan is - clean-up the engine, replace all gaskets, welch plugs, re-paint it, replace the clutch (it does have some scouring and I might as well do it while the engine is out).

So I have plenty more work to do in the coming months!

Nuts/Bolts that held everything together (cleaning required here):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2193.jpg

Clutch:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2186.jpg

Starter Motor:

Engine Bay:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2187.jpg

So - not that I was running out of things to do, but thanks to Gav I have an absolute shed load of work to go on with!

I will post before/after pictures as I tackle each item...

I have heard sandblasting aluminium can damage it. Have you noticed any of it and how big of a sandblaster was used do you know?
Now that it is sandblasted I think you need to do more paint prep , well so i have heard anyway.
That must be some super duper glue on there, how do you plan on getting it off?

wrinklearthur
20th January 2013, 08:45 AM
I would try the solvent acetone on that glue residue, be careful as acetone is highly inflammable.

Hi All,

Thanks Wrinklearthur - I did spot a tin of glue removal solvent at a hardware store recently. I will buy some of that and give it a go...

Landysmurf - I have no idea what media my local sandblaster is using. However it is very fine and pink/red in colour. I gave the sandblaster a small aluminium panel to test on, before I committed to using him for the ute tub. I was happy with the results. Yes I will do some more prep work before painting. As above I will try to remove the glue with a combination of a solvent and sanding.. Hours of fun!

Ok - unfortunately I have not done as much as I would like today, because chores never stop (as I am sure everybody on here knows!).. However I did manage to use "The Grey Ghost" quite a bit today:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2197.jpg

Here is what I did on Roger. Starter motor (Before):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2195.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2199.jpg

And after a few hours of cleaning:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2200.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2202.jpg

It is interesting that a few of the digits seem to have been over-written. A mistake at the factory I assume.

I will do a bit of prep work and then paint the starter motor satin black.

That's it for today.

Great stuff, Ghost. I'm sorry that the sandblasting did not remove that glue... That stuff doesn't look like it'll be fun to remove.

I thought the galv capping looked pretty good after the sandblasting. Are you happy with the finish?

Hi John/Landy Smurf,

If I had the time, patience and the budget - I would take the cappings off and have them re-galvinised... And then pop rivet them back on!

However - I am simply going to paint them with White King Rust Guard Hammered Finish (Silver). You can get it at Bunnings and I think that it looks pretty good.

The cappings on my car had been painting green (the body colour) at some point in it's life. Actually I think that the car has had a few different colours over it's life - light green, olive, and yellow as well...

At least when I am finished it will all be uniform!

Yeah, it's an interesting one. I have had such a time stripping old paint off my old car, and I am so keen to get the original feel back, that I am kind of loathe to coat my galv capping with anything. That said, I know that G Ghost is getting some terrific finishes on this thread. I know I will have to do something at the places where the original galv has been damaged, so a bit is up in the air for me.

Given all the time and money in the world - I'd say new galvanising. But then you might not get the original finish.

Hang on. Some rivets just rolled past. I have a sudden urge to chase them and count them.....

The trouble with you doing such a good job is that the finish on my own vehicle is starting to depress me! Just a few weeks ago I looked at the underneath of the tub and decided against painting it all.....

Brilliant work - keep it coming..

Hi All,

Not as much done this week as I would like (work keeps getting in the way!)

Thanks to Landy Smurf - I now have a painted & re-assembled gear stick:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2268_zps7faaaaef.jpg

Next up I decided to sand/clean/clear coat - the vent covers.
This took a surprising amount of care and time. Before/After:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2267_zpse9b7b422.jpg

I bought a new bumper bar as the bumper on my car can only be described as home made, and very poorly at that. The bumper - painted:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2252_zps704d5362.jpg

When the engine came out I noticed that the fly-wheel had some light surface rust on it.. So I cleaned it up. For the moment I have wrapped it in a pillow case - but should I spray it with oil or something?
Before/After Cleaning:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2265_zps537a2fdc.jpg

The last job was bogging the small holes of rust holes in the bottom of the doors:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2255_zps468fb076.jpg

Next weekend I plan to paint the 2nd coat of the tub and hopefully the door bottoms also.

looking good. I would spray or rub some oil on the flywheel. It probably wouldnt rust much but a bit of oil would be good just to be sure

I have often wondered what to do with the capping on the tub once sandblastered. what do you guys suggest?

I got some regalvanised and they came up great.
The place I used is in Adelaide and they have a minimum flat price up to a specified weight. From memory I think it was $150 up to 75kg.
So I just sent over every bit of gal Landy trim I had laying around, grilles, bumper bars, tail gate fittings, bonnet spare wheel brackets and body cappings. You can get a lot done at a reasonable price as the bumper bar is really the only thing of any significant weight.
When they were ready rather than have them sent home on a truck I picked them up and wrapped them in old blankets to avoid any rubbing etc in transit. Because glavanising is a very industrial process, had I have opted to have them trucked home, they would been just wired together and thrown on the truck tray.

Cheers, Mick.

Most States have a few companies that will do the galvanising for you.

QLD Yellow Pages® | galvanising in qld, Australia (http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search/listings?clue=galvanising&locationClue=qld&selectedViewMode=&emsLocationId=)

I deal with a galvaniser in Dandenong, they are set up to deal with mainly large pieces of steel fabrication (their other site does the chassis for Jayco). LR parts are a bit time consuming to wire up for dipping in comparison to their day-to-day work.
Pays to have a chat with someone before you turn up with dozens of small parts, also check what preparation you need to do. Light surface rust will be removed by their acid dipping process but heavier rust needs to be blasted first. Too rusty and they either won't dip it or they will blast and send you the bill.

Hi All,

Well the last 2 weeks have basically been spent on the inside of the tub...

This is what it looked like - sand blasted, but covered in glue residue:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2191.jpg

After many hours sanding - here is what it looked like, without glue:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2273_zps65b9773a.jpg

And now after a count of primer:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2275_zps6f2e1949.jpg

And after the first coat:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2282_zps4e598404.jpg

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2285_zpsde2b2432.jpg

I will be masking/painting the gal with hammer guard finish, once I have finished another top coat.

That's it for this week!

Hi All,

While I am waiting for the paint to dry on the Tub, I decided to continue doing some other small jobs. Mainly cleaning jobs.

About a month ago bacicat came out to my house and removed my engine, clutch, etc - so there are plenty of bits and pieces that need to be cleaned up!

First - Drivers Side Engine Mount:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2289_zps643d7f58.jpg
I have cleaned-up the bolts/washers/nuts:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2303_zps2e4b8f57.jpg
I will post a picture of the bracket, once it's been cleaned/painted...

Next up - the various nuts/bolts that hold the gear-stick in place:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2302_zpsd645107a.jpg

Next up - this was labelled as starter motor. I sure hope bacicat remembers what this was for... :wasntme:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2298_zpsf6c54ffd.jpg

Some clips... Can't quite remember what these are for either...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Clutch inspection plate? Before:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2296_zps938ebb0e.jpg
And After:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2305_zps3cdfa7a9.jpg

Question - should I:
(a) Paint the inspection plate satin black?
(b) Paint the inspection plate silver?
(c) Paint the inspection plate with a clear coat
(d) Leave it as it is?

Any advice and thoughts are always welcome!

Homestar

Don't worry mate, I'll find a spot for all those bolts when it goes back together.:D

I would paint the clutch inspection plate black myself, it will end up that colour eventually...:)

Well being a funny old B, I forgot where I put your sill brackets.
Well they showed up last night, right where I put them, so I will post them as soon as I clean a sizable part of Tasmania off their outsides. :p

They look like the ones off the air cleaner hose, the filler pipe has the top one that is a lot larger, but the bottom clamp is about that size.

I think the original fuel pipe clamps for the series 2A were the wire, nut and metal thread type.

Hi All,

Thanks to some motivation from DennisS1 (and some very expensive quotes) I decided to try and tidy-up my steering wheel myself...

Hi All,

Firstly - I have cleaned the Skirt brackets (kindly provided by Wrinkle Arthur).
Before / After Cleaning:

I cleaned the Drivers Side Engine Mount - ready for paint:

I removed the Oil Filter -

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2372_zps38ec111a.jpg

Cleaned the bolts/washers:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2375_zps0b6f556f.jpg

After a few hours of cleaning -

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2377_zpsbbdfa72f.jpg

Question to all - should I paint it? I was thinking that I will paint it Satin Black, but it's kind of sad to paint it now that it looks all pretty? Then again - it will just get dirty...

:wasntme:

What do people think?

Landy Smurf

could you leave it for the first oil change and then see?

Johnno1969
11th March 2013, 05:51 PM
It depends upon how original you want it.. was "rust" the original colour? The filter housing on my 2.25D was, I believe, blue originally. Maybe just hit that nice shiny steel with some Penetrol and see how you go from there?

Thanks for keeping this thread so informative; every little bit os obviously getting a lot of good care.

Cheers,

John

I don't know how to do it but I think it would look nice with a cadmium coating and then with a coating of clear lacquer to keep it.

Hi Landy Smurf,

My main cleaning tools are:

1) An electric drill with a plastic wheel brush. The red one on the left is fantastic - lasts quite a while. The blue one on the right works well but they never seem to last.
They are available at Bunnings. Here is a picture:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/90.jpg

2) I also use a metal bowl, with Diggers Degreaser in it. With plenty of tooth brushes to get in those hard-to-get at places.

3) I buy bags of white rags from the hardware store. You can see how things are cleaning, and SWMBO didn't like me using her tea-towels...

4) Above all - lots and lots of patience and elbow grease!

One day I should buy a parts cleaner... And a Sand Blaster. And a Spray Booth. And an Engine Crane. And an Engine Stand.. And a Welder...

Wrinklearthur - I have been researching cadmium paint, and it mostly seems to be a process like chroming.. How would that be for some bling on a Landy!

I have previously used WhiteKnights Clear Guard paint - but I'm not sure if engine heat would kill it. I am tempted to try VHT SP184 Clear Coat on it...

I wonder if other people have tried VHT SP184? (It is a clear coat for wheels but lists temps up to 121c)

Maybe worth a try....

Homestar
11th March 2013, 08:30 PM
That clear coat should be fine. If the oil temp ever gets to 121 degrees in that engine, you will have more to worry about than the paint on your filter housing...:D

It's funny reading this because I've been cleaning/replacing bits of my 2a's engine as well - bell housing, sump, mounts, and all associated nuts, bolts and washers :D I couldn't believe how much sludge was in the bottom of the sump though ... it's been a while since it's been off, certainly what was left of the gasket suggested that ;)

Keep the posts coming, it's making quite an interesting read :BigThumb:

G'day Mr Ghost,

I have just read through all 143 posts on this fantastic thread and taken copious notes! Congratulations on your superb work, particularly your commitment to keeping things original where possible, and many thanks for the inspiration.

I'm just thinking about an upcoming project and wondering about paintwork. Now that you've come this far, are you happy with the results of doing the paint work yourself; especially with the Deep Brunswick Green colour? Does Roger look as good 'in the flesh' as in your great pics? And do you have any experience with how the paint will weather and wear over time?

cheers and thanks again!

Hi Garry,

Thanks for the kind words! I will be the first to admit that the cleaning/sanding/painting does get tiresome at times... But it will be worth it in the end!

You do ask a very good question. Am I happy with the results? Yes I am very happy. "Bacicat" popped in for a visit recently and had a look at the painted panels and he seemed reasonably impressed.

I am only a beginner and certainly not an expert. I have learnt quite a bit along the way though!

This may sound obvious, but it really depends on what you want the end result to be and what you want to use the car for. This project is going to be a weekend car, road car, some 4wding - and is not meant to be concourse!

I get enjoyment out of restoring a car that looks good, goes well and can be used. I do not intend on thrashing it through the bush - I am not interesting in fitting bigger wheels, tyres, lift kits, etc.

I fully understand why people do concourse cars, and why they modify them. It's all a matter of personal choice. To each his own I say!

The dilemma for me was -

If I spend hours and hours, and lot's of $ I could end up with a concourse car. Better than factory. But then I wouldn't want to use it for fear of damaging it. Which defeats (for me) the entire purpose of restoring it - so that I can use it!

I also wanted to keep things reasonably original - which means keeping the panels that came with the car, minor dents and all.

If I wanted a concourse car, I would have spent more time on panel beating out the dents, filling them with body filler, sanding it all back to be baby smooth, a good coat of primer, multiple top coats (I always do 2), and a few coats of clear (I haven't done this).

When it comes to paint I have learnt that all of the hard work is in the preparation. 80% prep work, and 20% painting! The more your prepare the better out it will come.

I also specifically went for a paint that is readily available. When painting my other project (the grey ghost), I got 80% through it and the paint colour that I had been using was discontinued...
I had the paint "matched" and 2 different places, and the match was far from perfect - it was miles off.

It is sometimes tempting to quickly sand a panel, and then get the paint on quickly because that is the fun part. But you won't get a mirror finish by taking any short cuts.

I am happy with what I have done - it will get a good looking car, not perfect, but a lot better then when I bought it!

I can't speak for weathering of the paint - as all of the panels are being stored indoors at the moment, because the car is still in bits! The other project (the grey ghost) lives outdoors and the paint has held up quite well over the last 1.5 years - but it's only been 1.5 years..

It's really up to you - being a combination of how much time, effort and money do you want to spend? And what do you want to use the car for?

As mentioned by 'Mr Ghost', I have seen Roger in the flesh - both before the resto started, and more recently with some of the painting complete. I can say that it does look as good, if not better than the camera can make out. As mentioned, it is faithful to the style of restoration, and there has been a LOT of prep work. While not a concourse finish, it will certainly turn heads when back on the road.

You make me sound like a paint critic...:D. Yes, I was 'reasonably' impressed - actually, I was very impressed, the paint colour and finish really suit the vehicle, and it is a credit to the time you have taken prepping everything.:)

Hi bacicat,

I didn't mean to make you sound like a paint critic - I just didn't want to talk myself up! I didn't want to sound like an expert, because I am certainly not!

I do have a lot of enthusiasm though - which hopefully counts for something!

The help of people like you (and other advice on this forum) has been a massive help to me. I've not done this sort of thing before, and it really helps when people like yourself give up your spare time to help!

"Roger" still has a way to go - but I'm still quite excited about working on him!

Yeah, that all makes good sense. Thanks.

I too want a 2a that has been lovingly given a new lease on life, respected for what it has been (history is so important when it can be known isn't it?) and actually used and enjoyed. I admire vehicles that are on show, but I want to be able to putter around our property, take a trailer load of rubbish to the tip and drive to the village to do the shopping. None of that would be fun if I was worrying about the possibility of a scratch.

And for me, one of the best things about your approach is that touch-up jobs can be done readily by the bloke who actually put the paint on in the first place.

I guess, as a novice, my question is about whether I want and can afford a genuine paint code colour applied by a professional, or whether using something else, very close to original would be satisfying, especially if I discover I can actually do it myself. Something I am yet to put to the test!

Love this forum. Thanks again and looking forward to your next post.

cheers

Hi All,

I managed some more work on the car last week -

Firstly I removed the dip-stick tube:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2450_zpsf05f7e1f.jpg

Cleaned and painted it:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2456_zpscc069be5.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2480_zps97c4b623.jpg

Painted the breather pipe and cap:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2462_zps8335714b.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2461_zpsa3f87bb1.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2459_zps2967232f.jpg

The biggest job was making a stand for the tub. The tub had been sitting on 2 x saw horses, but I was going to put the roof back on the tub and paint it. This would make the roof too high up to reach - so a mate and I spent a few hours building this -
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2482_zps7cbcbbf4.jpg

Then I put the roof back on the tub -
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/IMG_2484_zps63ff8191.jpg

The plan for the next few weeks is - sand, clean, prepare and paint the roof. And continue on the engine - once I get the thermostat housing off.. :(

Just been having a bo-peep at some of your images, what caught my attention was the image of the LHS of the engine block with the stencilled number 537.
That would certainly indicate to me that your early 2 1/4 lt engine was out of a S2 Command/Recon or S2 109ex mil, but it would be a time consuming task to look up the engine numbers to find out 100%, anyway keep at it, it is looking good, cheers Dennis.

I was very sad :( when the thermostat housing bolts sheared off (there is another thread about it) - and removing them was the biggest highlight of the weekend..

However I also managed -

Drivers side engine mount - painted:

The " next to the thermostat housing" item is the mixture temp sensor. It switches the yellow choke light on when the engine reaches operating temp and warns you that the choke is still on and you are wasting fuel!! It probly is non operational now. They do not seem to have a long lifespan. A green? wire attaches to the terminal(Brass nut)
ALL IN ALL A VERY NICE JOB YOU ARE DOING!

Grey Ghost I notice that you paint the vehicle with the windows in, had you considered removing them and replacing the rubbers.
I recently replaced the rubbers on my series 3 as they had gone hard and perished. As a result they did not hold the glass firmly and it was able to move around in them, so along with that and some grit in there they would make a horrible squeaking noise. I know it's hard to believe that this noise could be heard in a Land Rover along with the one million other noises, but it was irritating. Clark Maples sell the rubber seal and its a reasonably easy job to replace it. The first one is probally the hardest, working out the correct length to cut the rubber so that it doesn't either bunch up or end up with a gap when finnished. Once you have developed a bit of knack it's all over in half an hour. You need an offsider inside the vehicle to assist and a tool made up from a short section (200ml long) of small bar or pipe, with a piece of wire formed into a diamond shape and brazed onto the end of it. The diamond has to be about 6mm inside measurement so as to allow the rubber beading the locks the window rubber in place, to freely pass through it! Some dishwashing concentrate is necessary too.

Cheers, Mick.

Hi Mick,

Thanks for the tips. I did remove the glass from the upper tailgate window - as it was badly perished. I have yet to purchase a replacement rubber - now I know where to get it from!

For some reason the rubbers on this car are in remarkable condition.. They actually look new to me. I should have removed them - even though I masked up the windows, as you can see there are still some small bits of paint on the rubber... You wouldn't have a tip for removing paint from rubber would you? :wasntme:

Hi All,

Q: Does anybody know the size/type of the screw? Mine has one screw missing. Even better - would anybody know where I could purchase some? (I am sure there are others missing on the car!)

The screw is likely to be BA thread (British Association).
If you find an old piece of electrical equipment you might find something to match. I tend to save odd screws from things being thrown away (not that I throw much away).
Because the head size isn't much bigger than the threaded section you may find it difficult to match exactly.

Well - I removed the Alternator, primarily so that I could clean the engine. While I was at it - I might as well clean it up a bit, and the brackets for it..

Brackets - Before:

About half of my land rovers have/had hand throttles.

Yeah the hand throttle is meant for use with a PTO, but so few people run anything bar a winch from their PTO that it is all bar redundant. It isn't particularly safe using it as cruise control!

I've found hand throttles really useful off road on failed hill climbs.
Foot on brake and clutch, set hand throttle to 2-3000, lift off brake and clutch - no reliance on a dodgy handbrake.
The hand brake in the 2a seems pretty good, but the brake on 80 series Toyota is terrible.

i used to used them on site when setting out highways, stick the 110 in low first , engage drive, hop out the cab, go to the back and every 10-20m drop out pegs, pins, etc. Run forward every so often to correct the steering. Use to go for miles like that.

Hi All,

I am still sanding, cleaning and priming the chassis... When I get bored of that I tackle other smaller jobs.

Grey Ghost,

I love looking at your photos of your restoration! You are so, perfectionist. Please don't take that the wrong way! You do an excellent job, I wish I had the patience to do a job like that, I am far to slap happy to get a finish like that.

Did you find a sump? I do still have lots of those odd type of spares, as I am lucky enough to have plenty of room to hang onto any parts that normally get sent to the metal recyclers.

I will be needing some things myself, as I have a island chap interested in rebuilding some Land Rovers, they have their chassis and firewalls rusted away completely due to the climate he lives in.

When I have a better idea of what models he needs, I will be posting a wanted add on here. He did say that only one 80" had made it to his island, but plenty of series one 86", 107", Series 2A's, etc. He has told me most of those rusted out Land Rovers still had usable mechanicals, I have been telling him about the availability of UK manufactured replacement galvanised chassis and firewalls, that news he was very interested in.

Today Ernie will be coming up today to have a look at another car I have here , I have a Australian built 1956 Chevrolet that I am feeding a few parts into and He wants a Australian built 1957 Chevrolet four door to restore as he is a retired panel beater.

Let me know about the sump.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the kind words! This project gets bigger by the day, as I remove a part to sand/clean/paint it, and then I notice another part and think to myself "I can't leave that on there, looking like that.Something else to remove."

You end up chasing your tail sometimes. :wasntme:

It is a hobby and keeps me busy on weekends - it is hard to keep up the motivation sometimes, but then I get compliments like yours - and it fires me back up again! (So thanks!)

Hi Arthur,
Yes I did manage to source a sump thanks. I got one from your neck of the woods (Mr Benson). It is currently half submerged in a bucket of molasses solution. It looks to me like the inside of the sump is painted - should I use a special paint on the inside? How hot does the engine oil get in the sump? I could paint the inside with pot-belly black, and the outside the same I suppose.. Have you painted a sump before? I wonder what others have done..?

Here is today's update - the thermostat housing has been painted (3 coats):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2681_zps456d0121.jpg

I painted the rear brake protection plates:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2685_zpsfd7dae97.jpg

The firewall has a hole in it where the previous owner had made some home made modifications. Not owning a welder, nor the skills to weld (which would certainly be a good starting point in using a welder) I decided to patch the holes... It's not perfect, but once painted I don't think that many people would notice. Okay maybe anybody that is NOT on this forum won't notice! :wasntme:

Here are the before pictures of the hole (inside the cab then from the engine bay):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2601_zps0eba964c.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2602_zpsf447f816.jpg

First step was to sand back the area to bare metal (both sides):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2605_zpsc02db89e.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2604_zpsbb2db882.jpg

Next step was to etch prime it:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2612_zps2687e6b7.jpg

Then I made a small plate - which I also sanded, cleaned and primed:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2614_zps5b43fcbc.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2640_zps4c4e1ce3.jpg

I painted the engine bay side of the firewall. I then drilled some holes, and pop riveted the plate on the engine bay side:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2648_zpse4a3a51a.jpg

I then bogged the hole from the cabin side:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2687_zps0bfbd822.jpg

The entire firewall will be sanded, cleaned and painted - so once finished the only thing that is out of place from inside the cab are the 4 pop rivets. I figure that there are that many pop rivets, most people won't even notice!
:wasntme:

It's not perfect, but the cabin side is smooth and once the engine is back in I don't think that anybody will notice the plate on the inside of the engine bay.

I am continuing to sand/clean/prime the chassis - now isn't that a fun job.. After spending most of today on my back underneath the car, it's getting there... Slowly..

Johnno1969
28th April 2013, 01:49 PM
'twould be churlish for any of us here to hold you to account for those four extra rivets. The patch will be fine, I'm sure.

I don't envy you cleaning up the chassis. I found mine enough of a slog when it had nothing attached to it and I was able to flip it over or spin it about whenever the urge took me.

A: Twelve thousand rivets travelling in convoy.

Or, in your case, twelve thousand and four.

Hello Grey Ghost,

If you do not want to add to your rivet count you actually did the same amount of work needed to use Sikaflex which holds the sidings together on most new buses and pantechnicons - with no extra additions to the rivet count.:)

Top work Ghost! You will be finished long before I am :D

There is no need to paint inside the sump, but if you do it would need to be a heat-proof paint that won't come off and bugger the lubrication system, and of course your engine as well

Soak it in caustic-soda solution and you may discover that your paint is actually oil-tarnish,

Hi Flying,

I am using spray cans - if money was no object I would pay to get the thing sprayed professionally!

I have found that to get the best results (as with many things in life) - it all comes down to the preparation.. The more prep the better.

I tend to clean off all dust, mud and grime from the panel.
Sand the panel back to bare metal.
Clean it
Etch prime it
Spray in a clean/dust free/dry area, re-coat according to the recommended drying time.
I always do multiple coats.
I only ever do one panel at a time.
Move the finished panel to another room or cover it - to protect it from over-spray and damage.

Cheers!

Thanks to Super Gav (bacicat) the engine is now in a temporary cradle...

Engine - before:

And after hours and hours of cleaning and masking (ready for paint):

Next step is to paint the engine, sand/clean/paint the replacement sump, and then replace all of the gaskets and seals on the engine and put the various bits and pieces back on it! Hopefully somebody will remember how it all goes back together! :wasntme:

(Hint, hint - Super Gav!)

Chassis cleaning, sanding and priming continues in the meantime...

Hi All,

I bought a 2nd hand sump to replace my exiting one on "Roger".

Here it is - before I have done anything to it:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2667_zps2e281e85.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2664_zps82d09bea.jpg

After 3 weeks of soaking in molasses:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2710_zps7f6bf884.jpg

If you look closely, you can see that it has been painted on the inside - the paint is flaking off...

Most of today has been spent sanding/cleaning the sump. Here it is ready for paint:

I am going to paint the inside/outside with VHT flat black - which I figure is good for 288c - surely the inside of the sump won't get that hot...

If it does, then the paint flaking off will be the least of your concerns...:D

But I have to ask - why paint the inside at all? I would just think you run the risk of flaking paint clogging the oil pump and galleries. It isn't going to rust, and I don't know of any other sump that is painted inside. Also, is the VHT paint oil proof? It may just come off once you fill the sump with oil.

Just thinking out loud here mate, feel free to tell me to take a hike.:)

Another top effort there today cleaning that up.

grey_ghost

Hi Gav,

There are 3 reasons why I am thinking of painting the inside of the sump...

1) The sump had been painted on the inside originally - so I am just keeping it original.

2) I don't know when I will be putting it on, the weather is getting worse and I would hate to have to remove surface rust again in the future. (I have had the misfortune of sanding back to bare metal, leaving a part - only to watch it rust in front of my own eyes!)

3) It will look so pretty! (not that anybody will ever see it, but hey - not many people will see the vast majority of parts that I have sanded/cleaned/painted)

However as always I take your advice on board - I have emailed the manufacturer to see if the paint is suitable for this application. If it isn't, then I will just paint the outside and coat the inside with fish-oil until I want to install it!

I'll let you know! :)

chazza
14th May 2013, 08:13 AM
Two things spring to mind from your posts;
1. I agree with Bacicat - be very careful what you put inside the sump! The best anti-rust material in this application is engine oil. Fishoilene would be last thing I would put inside an engine!
2. It looks as is if your sump wasn't completely immersed in molasses solution. Completely submerging it, is always the best approach, so as to exclude atmospheric oxygen from the rust equation. If the molasses hasn't eradicated all of the rust after 3 weeks, then either the solution isn't strong enough, or you live in a very cold place. Scrubbing the parts with a wire brush at least once a week, will help speed up the rust removal. Molasses should have left you with no work to do with regard to rust,

Cheers Charlie

grey_ghost
14th May 2013, 12:13 PM
Hi Charlie,

Good spotting - unfortunately my molasses solution (bucket) wasn't big enough to immerse the entire sump... So I experimented with swapping the ends over, scrubbing away the molasses solution each week or so.

Due to the cold climate and exposure to air - it didn't exactly work with 100% success! Normally the small parts that I put in the bucket are completely submerged!

I have also contacted the distributor of VHT. Bacicat and yourself are correct. The VHT paint is not recommended for internal parts. So I will simply give it a light coat of fish oil to prevent any surface rust while I wait to put the sump back onto the engine. The distributor did mention that there is a CRC product on the market for this, but I don't think that I will bother going down that path!

Cheers.

Not a good idea. Once the metal is out of the solution, it rusts very quickly.
Immerse it all. Remove, clean and paint very quickly.
What do people think of coating the inside of the sump with phosphoric acid? I am told it works well with steel wheels.

Hi All,

Well progress has been basically non existent over the last 2 months. This is mainly due to the weather - it's been either too cold, too wet or both which is quite frustrating. If the weather is any good - it's during the week when I am at work..

I have managed to start a few jobs when time/weather permits.

I spent a good few weeks cleaning/sanding/priming the chassis. Here is a before photo of it:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Here is a photo taken whilst removing the rear cross member (badly rotten):
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Here was some bits of the rear cross member:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Here is the new cross member and the chassis in primer (weeks later):

Here is the engine painted - first of two coats:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2765_zpsc9716029.jpg

Here is the radiator - I took it to the local radiator place and they flushed it, tested it and gave it a bit of a tidy up:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2771_zps3c3c715b.jpg

I have a few jobs on the go at the moment:

* Painting the chassis in satin black (weather permitting)
* Painting the engine (second coat - weather permitting)
* Painting the sump (weather permitting)
* Cleaning the gearbox (a very slow and messy process)

My trusty electric drill also died (just the brushes) - I have ordered some replacements (this will be my 3rd set of brushes) which is also slowing me down at the moment...

I am getting there - slowly but surely!

Hi Garry,

I purchased the rear cross member from the place in Blackburn (Melbourne) - Land Rover Parts and Accessories (http://www.fwd.com.au).

It is a Britpart piece, and slides over the end of the existing chassis rails.

Sorry I can't remember the price (I bought it last year) - but I have a feeling it was something like $245, but I could be wrong.

Hi Flying,

I did a bit of research on this (on this website) - as Gavin has said "Duck Egg Blue" is very close to the original colour.

I also found a post on this web-site that said that "VHT SP122 Pontiac Blue" is very close to "Duck Egg Blue".

So I went with that... Obviously if I was doing a con-course restoration I would try and track down the original paint, but I am not... So as long as it is close then I am happy with that.

The other factor was - I wanted a paint that was easy to obtain. When I did my first restoration ("The Grey Ghost") 75% the way through the painting process, the paint that I was using was discontinued... I went to 3 different paint shops and had paint colour matched - none of which came even close!

So I learnt from that mistake and I make sure that whatever paint I am using is both popular and easy to get - oh and buy plenty of it!

So VHT SP122 Pontiac Blue is the colour painted on my engine now.

Hi All,

Well it's been far too long since I've been on here... Waaay too long.

The poor (read wet/cold/miserable) weather wasn't helping. And then I went and broke a toe (which was quite painful, but they take an awful long time to repair) which also didn't help matters.

But I am now back and hoping to get the ball rolling again!

Here is a picture of the sump - painted, and with as much of the crud removed from the inside that I could get at:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2903_zps30558d0f.jpg

I had the flywheel machined - but you can hardly tell so I haven't taken a pic.

I have a few projects on the go at the moment, and will provide updates soon. To name a few:
* Engine - second coat of paint.
* Chassis - paint in satin black.
* Gearbox - clean.

Hi Tom,

I was wondering about your rear chassis cross member repair. I take it you welded on the replacement piece that you can buy 'with extensions' and that is what you mean when you say it just slips over the chassis rails?

I have a similar piece to be attached at some stage soon, and I was wondering...what happens to the rear spring hangers? Do you cut them away before the new piece is attached?

thanks,

Garry

grey_ghost
8th October 2013, 07:24 AM
Hi Garry,

Correct - the repair rear cross member has extensions that slip over the existing chassis. Imagine an upside-down U. The "top" of the upside down U sits on top of the chassis, and the open end of the U is at the bottom of the chassis. The repair panel comes with a bottom plate that you can weld on to completely box in the chassis underneath as well.

I believe that the piece is designed to slip over the end of an existing chassis - not replace the chassis.

I did not have to do anything with the spring hangers - luckily for me that part of the chassis was fine. I did have to make a slight cut in the extension so that it neatly slipped over the top of the spring hanger. If I had forgotten to do this cut - I would have obscured the chassis number on the spring hanger... That would have been fun at registration time..

I got the local mechanic to do the welding because:
a) I can't weld
b) I don't have the equipment anyway
c) This mechanic will be doing the roadworthy on the car - so he can't possibly knock back his own work.

Hi Sitec,

It certainly feels like I am spending hours in the shed at the moment, with little to see for it... Sanding back the chassis, painting it with a primer and then painting it with a top coat is taking quite some time.. As the chassis is not in a jig (it's on axle stands) I am spending quite a bit of time lying on my back... Certainly not much fun!

But yes, as you say - sometimes it all comes together in a bit of a rush - that for me is when it starts to get fun... I am *almost* at the re-assembly stage.. I need to finish painting the chassis, the bulk head, clean-up the front axle and prop shafts... And then re-assembly time!

ok, thanks for that, GG.
Actually I was hoping, for complicated reasons of my own, that it might have been necessary to have my welder guy remove the spring hangars (at least the one with the chassis number on it) as I was kind of hoping to get away with using a donor chassis which is in much better shape than Hedley's chassis, and just relocate the hangars so that I could keep the 'D' suffix chassis number to match the one on the dash.
What a brilliant idea having the RWC inspector as your welder! Love it. Wish I could do the same.
cheers
ps. sorry to hear about the toe. Sounds painful.

Hi All,

Well the chassis is finally painted:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2922_zps1598ab3d.jpg

The eagle eye amongst you will notice at the front of the car there is a non-standard piece of angle iron. It was like that when I purchased the car - originally there was also a flat plate on there, which I suspect had a winch on it. Alas there was no winch so I removed the flat plate - but have decided (for now) to leave this piece in place - I figure it probably adds some rigidity to the chassis. I can always remove it later.

The engine now has had 2 coats of paint - and I couldn't resist adding a few small pieces onto it:

I still have some work to do on the engine (install the distributor, fuel pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, alternator, engine mounts, sump, exhaust gaskets, etc) - but that is hopefully a days work with Super Gav... :wasntme:

And the gearbox is cleaned - or at least as clean as this little black duck is going to get it!

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2915_zpsc136cd24.jpg

I want to clean-up/service the hand-brake and then move onto:
Rear + Front Prop Shafts
Front Diff
Fire-wall / Bulk Head

And then the reconstruction begins in earnest:
Springs, shocks, dump stops
Rear Diff
Wheels/tyres
Fuel Lines
Wheel Cylinders
Engine/Clutch
Wiring Harness

Ah - it's never ending!!!

Hi All,

I decided to start on the next big task - sanding, cleaning and painting the bulkhead. I had read in a few places that the bulkhead is critical to the alignment of the car - eg if you don't have the bulkhead lined up correctly, you can have all sorts of issues with the doors, front wings, tub, bonnet, etc.

It made sense to me - everything basically hangs off the bulkhead, and if that isn't set-up then I can see there being issues.

That is what made me decide to leave the bulk-head on and sand/clean/print it in place...

Well after about 10 hours (I think that I am about half way) - if I ever have to do this again, the bulkhead is coming off any being sent off to the sand blasters!

Here are some progress photos:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2940_zps07cc75af.jpg

Being bored with this - and my hands numb from sanding, I decided to do a smaller job...

Here are the before/after photo's of the steering column cover plate:

I shall continue on the bulkhead when my sanity returns... :o

That's a labour of love there! The bulkhead is the starting point, but as you are not altering the two bulkhead outriggers, then by removing it and replacing it nothing should change. The two boltable uprights with the three bolts at the base are on slotted holes fore and aft, so will sit where they sit. Those same plates have slotted holes up and down where they bolt to the bulkhead.. infinitely adjustable. You'll find that once you have the rear tub back on, and the doors swung you might be adjusting the bulkhead anyhow, especially if you've replaced the rear X member.. Nomatter how accurate you are, they never go back exactly as the old one was. Keep up the good work! :)

Hi All,

Not a huge amount done this weekend. Firstly - the steering column bracket is now sanded, cleaned, painted. Here are the before/during/after pics:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2942_zps2ed78b6e.jpg

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2972_zpsf84b03b9.jpg

When I was cleaning the washers - I noticed that on both washers the hole is not centered! Weird - but looked intentional.

Next up - the seat rails. Before and after cleaning. I have painted them with a multiple coats of clear coat. Here they are before and drying:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2902_zps3c6a95f8.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_2974_zps96cd96ae.jpg

I am still trying to locate the correct screws. I found some new ones but they are longer than I want (they are 1" instead of 3/4") and they are also Phillips head instead of flat-head... I am still searching for the correct ones..

That's all for this weekend - it took quite a few hours cleaning those seat rails - certainly more time than I had expected!

Hi All,

Well you live and learn - if I ever do another restoration, one thing that I have learnt is - remove the firewall... It must be so much easier to sand/prime/paint with it removed, then when it is still in place. But then again - my yoga positions are now improving...

It took about 3 weekends - but I have finally sanded down the firewall. Here it is with the first (of 2) coats of primer on it:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3048_zpsf50d37e4.jpg
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3049_zps216fbbe5.jpg

While working on the firewall I decided to remove the small panel that holds the choke. As always - I removed all of the screws, but there was one last one that simply would not come off. I tried everything - impact drivers, WD40, screw driver head in a socket.. So in the end I had to resort to grinding off the screw head - which naturally resulted in some damage to the panel.. So that is another job - sand it back, bog, prime and paint. Here is the panel (the damage is the bottom middle screw hole):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3018_zps6ba62cd4.jpg

Oh and while using a grinder it's important to wear cotton clothing. I thought that I was, but maybe not -
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/b74a3b70-2cfa-477c-99d8-a08f417be8b7_zps67cc0471.jpg

It was fun taking off a t-shirt that is on fire, when you are wearing a cap, glasses, and the thing is well and truly alight.. :wasntme:

That's all for the weekend. The next job is paint a 2nd coat of primer, and then a couple of top coats!

Hi All,

Well managed to get a few more jobs done this weekend. I have painted the firewall with a second coat of primer - I didn't bother taking any photo's because it looks pretty much the same as the photo's posted in the last update!

Next small job (while waiting for the paint to dry) was to sand/clean/paint a few smaller items.

First up - I believe that this is some type of bracket for the dynamo / alternator. Here are the before pictures:

After sanding/cleaning:

Here are the before pictures for the radiator cowling:

Hi All,

I am hoping that all of these little jobs start to add up and I can start the rebuild process....Soon.

Decided to tidy up the seat brackets that are attached to the tub. The brackets that support the backs of the seats -

Here are the brackets - first I had to drill out all of the pop rivets...
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3085_zps1cdcc491.jpg

Then I sanded/cleaned them up:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3088_zpsa56d2e1c.jpg

Lastly I painted them - here is the first coat:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3091_zps7a8e40b1.jpg

Does anybody know where I can purchase the rubber buffers that go on the ends of these brackets, that the actual seat then rests on?? Ideas?

Scotts old Auto Rubbers will have someting or even Clarke Rubber.
Old fashioned rubber door stops (if you can find them) could be cut down to fit.

Next job was sanding/cleaning the panel that the choke hangs off. I had to do a small bog repair because the panel got slightly damaged when I removed it... It's now ready for paint:

Next job is to paint the main throttle linkage and this panel..

Hi All,

Today I got up as soon as there was enough light (forecast 38c in Melbourne which will be too hot to paint in according to the paint tin).
This morning I painted the main section of the front diff. I plan on cleaning & painting the brake backing plates next..

Should I spray fish oil on the gears - as some protection while the clutch/engine are out?

And finally here is the painted panel that the choke lives on:

Nah, the speed at which you are going, the fish oil will still be wet by the time you come to re assemble.. (Next week) :D. Jokes aside, it can't hurt. Either that or a WD40 soaked rag just wrapped around it. Looking good tho... Pressures on now to fix it then before the 'Big White Distraction' arrives... ;)

Fish oil goes hard and sticky eventually, which would be an extremely bad thing to have on the splines, if that is where you are talking about.

Coat it with oil, or grease and wrap the spline in a plastic bag and tie it in place, to stop dirt settling on it,

Hi Ron,

I purchased a cheap bench grinder from Bunnings - Ozito, I think that it was $40. The grinder has a wire wheel at one end and a stone wheel at the other. Naturally I am using the wire wheel.

I use gloves, a pair of needle nose pliers and lots of patience to clean each nut / bolt / washer individually. Depending on the size of the nut - you simply hold it in your hands - if it is small, then I use the pliers but very gently. I tend to put hold washers with the needle nose pliers - over the end of one of the arms. If the nut is very small I tend to leave the nut on an actual bolt - and hold it that way.

I had tried using chemicals like - petrol, WD40, turps, metho, degreaser - but nothing else seemed to work as well as the wire wheel on the bench grinder.

The good thing (strangely) about the Ozito is that it is cheap and not very powerful, it seems to have just enough oomph to remove the crap and not damage the actual surface.

When it comes to cleaning larger items I use an electric drill and these -
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/90.jpg

I don't use the blue type anymore because I found that they don't last very long, the red wheel lasts much longer. You can get these at Bunnings and Mitre 10.

Remember to tag and bag what the nuts/bolts/washers are for - I find the zip lock bags from the super market are fantastic for this.

And any steel parts it is a good idea to paint straight away - at least with an etch primer, as you would be surprised how quickly the surface rust comes marching back!

A lot of people use sand blasting for large items - I don't know enough about this, but make sure that if you do take it to a sand blaster they know their stuff. Different metals (steel / aluminium) require different media and you can damage aluminium if the wrong media is used..

Another method for larger parts is a molasses solution (there are multiple threads on here about this). Molasses is good for getting into the hard to get at nooks and crannies, but you also need time to let it do it's stuff. Again - remember to paint straight away or the surface rust comes running back quite quickly.

I hope that this helps - the biggest thing that you need is patience!!

I put small parts in a purse I made out of some shade-cloth and leave it suspended in the molasses solution. if you paint it with Ranex when it comes out, the rust never comes back.

It might be a good idea to replace the nyloc nuts on the hand-brake drum Ghostie - I had an embarrassing break-down in the middle of nowhere once because I re-used a nyloc - Paddock has them at a very good price,

Hi All,

Here is an update on the work done yesterday. Unfortunately today is chores day (firewood mainly) so not much will happen today. But yesterday -

Removed the 3 final fixtures from the instrument panel. I had been stuck with 2 of them - and they simply had screw on "knobs" (thanks for the tip Grommit). I simply had to hold the shaft with a pair of pliers and then un-screw the knob.. So all fixtures now removed..

Front/Back - BEFORE:

I then had a look at all of the components that hold the spare wheel on the bonnet. Before:

Hi All,

Not a huge amount done yesterday - still doing odd jobs around the house, which I guess happens to all of us!

I cleaned-up the rubber stops that go on the bonnet - and gave them multiple coats with a tyre shine product... They came up so-so:

Hi All,

Well with the help of a mate last night I achieved some milestones...

I wasn't going to but decided to remove the gearbox - as it certainly made removing the clutch slave cylinder bracket much easier. So last night:

* Removed the front prop-shaft
* Removed the rear prop-shaft
* Removed the gearbox
* Removed the hand brake drum
* Removed the gearbox mounts....

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3306_zpsc4a2a985.jpg

On closer inspection have a look at the passenger (right) bottom gearbox mount....

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3307_zps9710a1c5.jpg

Hmm - bit of a home made job there... I am not sure why though - why would the PO replace the standard LR one for this? Perhaps the original one failed and so he made this up? Not sure..

So I now have more jobs to do!!!
* Clean/Paint front Prop Shaft
* Clean gearbox - all the nooks that I couldn't get at while it was in the car
* Clean/Paint top of gearbox member
* Clean/Paint hand brake drum
* Clean/Paint the 2 chassis gearbox mounts
* Clean/Paint the 2 gearbox mounts that connect onto the gearbox
* Clean/Paint the clutch slave cylinder bracket
* Order some parts..

As I said, I wasn't going to remove the gearbox - but when I spotted the weird gearbox mount - it just made sense to pull it out..

I think you have deduced correctly. My S1 had two cracked mounts and I had to make a new one - it was caused by being driven for years without the rubbers doing their job, so every bump it hit gave the mountings a thump as well.

If that fabricated mounting is doing its job, why not leave it there? It leaves a bit of history with the car,

Hi All,

I started off today cleaning the gearbox today - I had already given it a good clean, but now that it's out I spent more time on it. I didn't take any photo's because I have done so already.

I then cleaned-up the hand-brake backing plate. Before:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/Roger%20-%201960%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3355_zpsa52cad0e.jpg

Next job was to clean-up the bolts that hold the actual mounts onto the gear-box. Note there was only 1 "tab" on the passenger side gear-box mount.

Should there be either:
a) 1 - only one required on the passenger side.
b) 2 - only one required per side (drivers/passenger)
c) 4 - two required on each side
d) 0 - not require required..
What's the straw poll ?!!?

Hi Dennis,

I have managed to order the "2 felt rings that support the ball" - but the UK supplier is out of stock and is quoting "between 1 week and 6 months"...

So - would you have a photo of one, so that I could make one temporarily while I await for the real deal to arrive? I have ordered them but I want to continue putting the thing back together and not wait! I was thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to cut up some felt and make some myself, but the parts manual doesn't really show what they look like in any detail.

If you had a picture that would be fantastic!
