View Full Version : Alternative to rear bar.

There has been much discussion on Rock Sliders to protect the underside of the sills.
Is/are there alternative(s) to the Heavy duty Kaymar rear bar. Yes it does the job of protection but it is a massive piece of metal work, heavy and not inconsiderable in cost.
I was wondering whether a rock slider type of structure exists which would still offer underside protection when climbing down steps or large rocks but was not quite as, well, massive as the Kaymar?
Could one be fabricated?
Is the Kaymar actually the minimum it needs to be to protect the overhang of the D3/4?

Will be watching.
Maybe with ability to option a jerry can carrier?
We are not all looking for extended range beyond what 1x 20L jerry gives.

Gordon,

You can make an aluminium bar for my car if you like, provided it will be compatible with the Kaymar spare wheel holders. I would love to shed some weight from the back.

Don't forget to finish my front guard though!!!

How'd you go with that one, Gordon? If it's like my "May Projects", they're now "July Projects"... ;)

The weight of a Kaymar Bar is only a very minor increase percentage to the D3/4. Adding a net 40 kgs to a vehicle weighing nearly 3,000 kgs, just over 1%.

But it comes out of your payload, which is what people don't like.

I would like to see confirmation of that weight. The Kaymar setups are basically the same configeration for all 4WD's they cater for. Having tried to pick up a Patrol twin carrier setup, there is sight more difference than 40kg's, once you take off the std bumper and bracing. Based on a basic setup with one tyre carrier, I reckon you would be looking at least twice that figure. Add another swing arm and carrier with rim/tyre, and there is another 45- 50 kilos. The D3/4 vehicle weight including a tank of fuel, is closer to 2500 kilos than the often quoted 3000.
...but yes in the overall scheme of things, the weight is not a lot. Add on a bullbar, aux. tank & roofrack, and it's starting to get up there.

There seems to be a lot of unnecessary metal and therefore unnecessary weight in the arm on the rear carrier.

And the wheel sits right up in front of the glass.
I like the look of the front bar on that site...

I too, like the front bar. You could add to it to create a Sahara bar.
Shouldn't be too hard for someone to copy.............Gordon????

The one pictured is higher than normal, they customized it per customer request. The weight of the rear bar is about 29 kgs, the wheel support is approx. 15 kgs.
I have been in touch with Raul there (Spanish only)-- he is truly and artist in my opinion. He can customize to your specifications as well.... Let me know if you have interest, and I can facilitate communications if needed.
Be a shame to start making knock offs... but he would probably work with a local fabricator if the right situation presented itself.
There are two versions of the front bumper, the aggressive one pictured, and a discrete winch mount version. I can post pictures if anyone is interested. Front bumper weights (approximate) 30 kgs, Base for Winch 19 kgs

Yeah pics would be great thanks - those weight figures are impressive. Are you thinking of getting some kit sent over? Have you talked prices with him? No hablo espanol...

Yes -- I have discussed prices with him, they are very fair, of course quantity makes it much better.
I ordered a full set in for evaluation purposes. That is shipping to the US though.
I will be posting some pictures here soon. I will work out the pricing and put some approximate pricing for you as well. They would come directly from Spain at this stage of the game, unless someone is identified there that would be willing to stock a few.

Here is a link to the pictures in my gallery entitled "Bumpers & Carriers" There are too many pictures and too large to post here. You should be able to zoom in on most of them. I will continue to add construction pictures as the build progresses on the front and rear bumpers / tire carrier.

They look very neat. Are there alloy versions planned?
Do they have recovery and jacking points?
Air bag compatibility?
Parking sensor accommodation?
Cheers

Parking sensor accommodation? -- all front and rear come with knockouts for the sensors.
Air bag compatibility? The new bumper comes with new air bag sensors, the old ones are too large.
Recovery and jacking points? The current one does not have, but he can and he will add them for anyone who wants it. The front would be near the body mount points. The rear would be near the outside edges. It will require beefing up the bumper to accommodate the vehicle weight for the rear.
Are there alloy versions planned? Yes, we are hoping to work with some local manufacturers to coordinate on appropriate materials for the market. We are completely flexible to produce exactly to the requirements for the market, in the appropriate material, Steel, Stainless, Alloy, and so on.
I will post specifics to your other questions shortly, I am talking with the designer / manufacturer for accurate answers.
