My bottom tail gate on my D4 now requires two presses of the rubber switch to make it release.....is this the early stages on the mechanism failing ?
Heading to Shark Bay in the morning.....need to be able to grab a coldie on arrival.

That's why you need to get the front seat chiller box! You can grab the coldie before you arrive. ;)

The car will cover the distance so easily and comfortably that you won't need a coldie when you arrive!

I am sure it will. Was actually tossing up between taking my touareg or the disco. Disco won due to long range tank and full size spare. Vw is quicker, and uses about 10% less fuel. Disco also has rear entertainment for the kiddies.
Heading off at 4am....hopefully not too many roos around as I don't want to yet put a scratch on my bar.
Apologies for all those on the colder areas.
Will be feeding on some blue bone tomorrow night.

Dilemmas dilemmas...
Thankfully I haven't had this issue & don't want to either. I should read up on the mechanical over-ride before it does break. And while I'm there throw in a better sub too!!

Mine was doing the same - got the tailgate adjusted by the dealer under warranty at the last service and no more problems.
We found that in our case if you apply some inwards pressure to the lower tailgate before/when pressing the release button it would release on the first press.
We did this for a couple of months before the fix and it and took a while for us to stop being surprised that it would release first go after the fix.:D

The part that usually fails is the cable on the release mechanism for the upper section of the tailgate (the mechanism is actually located in the lower section though, and is separate from the lower section release mechanism).
The one in my D3 died after a few years. I think it is too early for it to be failing in your D4. Hopefully LR has improved the design of the cable in the D4, seeing it was a common problem in the past.

Hi Brett,
Just had a modified release fitted last week on my D3. Suffered the same two presses on the rubber for 18 months but realised if it failed with drawers fitted It would be hell to rectify. Enjoy your trip but get it attended to when you get back. Its easier to do whilst its still operational. Part was $66.
Cheers

Thanks John.
Just got back....very quick trip. Car went super well.
I ended up leaving the tail gate opened while camping....started to take 3 times pressing to get it to open. Did not want to have no access to beer...and of course the food.
Booked in for service tonight and for this to be fixed, taking into account what I have read here. I am sure they will say that they have never heard of this...the same thing they said about the economy being widely ambitious.
Blue bone groper is such fun to catch....and sooooo nice to eat.

Guys....
Knowing Land Rover nothing has changed. And if you think LR cares you're all dreaming..
Ever experienced the bending rear door in a defender? leading to the eventual cracking if the rear glass? Then the seals never coming together causing the cabin to suck in dusty air at 80kph +?
Having previously owned a 2004 Defender 110, a 2010 Freelander 2 SE & now a 2011 3.0L Disco 4 SE these quirky LR issues are getting a little long in the tooth for me.
Love the D4, hating always expecting something stupid to break & this amateur audio system, I hate it. Worth 95 grand? Maybe..
Just slightly annoyed

Hi Paul,
The modified tail gate release has a solid forged end on the cable. Looks like an allen?? key. There were a lot of guys with D3's on the forum that rigged up their own solutions. I remember one of them was a fix very similar. The guy used a cut down allen key and electrical connectors as fasteners. He should be working for LR. Unbelievable that such a scungy part could be fitted to such a great vehicle.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply, how do i tell if mine has been modified, without pulling it apart?
LR may know from the vin i suppose.
Yes have seen the posts on fitting something a bit stronger, also the one's on having a cable somewhere in the event it fails.
Many a thread on D3UK about this as well.

Exactly,just like the EPB.................!
As for the EPD,great when working, but can cause all sorts of probs if it gets full of mud?
Umm,it is fitted to an off road vehicle.:(
