Did the TD5 water pump today.....thank god for ratchet spanners is all I have to say.
If only they had of made the impellor shaft 2-3mm shorter, it would have been an easier job!
Good result though, the old one didnt have much life left in it at all.

Just wondering how long the water pump lasted?

I got the disco off my uncle 2 years ago, he had it since new, he hasnt had it replaced. Its done 165K now.
So not bad going. The seal failed on it.

So why do people make it out to be replaced regularly??
Just wondering what year TD5 you have?

My original water pump lasted 9yrs 100k km(bearing seal) replacement cheapy lasted 3yrs 30km (casing o ring seal failed).replaced with genuine last week.
Much easier job second time as I had ratchet ring spanners.
Cheers

Uumm .... .... it's still on the workbench ...
... I started working on a bracket to shoehorn it into the engine bay, got sidetracked, and it's one of those unfinished projects ..... :whistling:
Better make a note about that one :D
Thanks for the reminder !! :p

Timely post - I've got a water pump there to replace, and have been pondering the purchase of a set of ratchet spanners. Looks like its a goer.
I've got a leaky manifold, and a few oil leaks on that side anyway, so seemed an appropriate time to replace the pump.
For comparison, mine's done about 185k and is the original, and seems to be leaking both coolant and I think power steering fluid as well.

My water pump did 295,000 kms / 9 yrs and was perfect. I just changed it as a precaution when I did the radiator and all the hoses.

Not sure about the pivot head, it may be more of a hindrance than a help in the tight spots.
I did the water pump on my daughter’s Pulsar, 2000 model and 300K's, last weekend.
If it wasn’t of the ratchet spanners I think I would still be there.....

Point being these will give the angle of the head you need but lock at the angle and not flop around.

I have a 2000 Disco.
Def need at least an 8mm ratchet spanner with a swivel head. Its handy for one of the bolts closest to the block.
Ive got a bluepoint set and they worked a treat!
And a set of nimble fingers.

If you had done the o-ring between the water pump support and block at the same time you wouldn't have needed the ratchet spanner.

How do you mean support?
My pump was held on by 5 bolts and had o-rings on both sides of the pump to seal it.

Mine were a Supercheap special ... 8mm to 19mm in 1mm steps, open oposite end, long handles ... Stanley brand .... $49.95
Stanley Spanner Set - Geared, 12 Piece, Metric - Supercheap Auto Australia (http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Stanley-Spanner-Set-Geared-12-Piece-Metric.aspx?pid=223842&menuFrom=6041#Description)
They seem to be pretty good quality.
Flexi-head would be nice ... but not for an extra $215.
How could I say no at that price ! ?? :)

The big lump of alloy that your water pump is bolted to, along with the power steering pump, air con compressor, and ace pump if your d2 is so equipped.
There is an o-ring between the back side of the bracket and the block which fails. One of the guru mechanics on the site recommends doing the o-ring at the same time as the pump, but very few seem to bother.
If you do the o-ring you unbolt the support bracket with the water pump in situ, and replace the water pump out of the vehicle.
Don't know what km's people see before the o-ring goes. Mine had done 210K km.
Attached pdf of relevant page from Microcat. Bracket/support is no. 8, the o-ring that fails is no. 2

I didnt know you had to do it, but I do now.
I just did the water pump, thats all, no other seals or o-rings.

It's only essential if you have a leaking o-ring. It's more a preventative maintenance thing, and just as easy to do both at once. If you run green coolant the leaky o-ring can be difficult to pick up until it is leaking badly and coolant loss is obvious in the expansion tank.

Fair enough. Checking back I think Justinc recommended changing the pump when the o-ring went rather than vice versa.

Any suggestions as to where I can get one of these seals quickly by post? I'm replacing the water pump next weekend, so might as well replace it asap.
Even the aprt number would do if someone can help

Coopers in sydney will do it , as i said they only ever do the pump change with a change of O ring for block mounting, and as previously stated you dont have to fiddle with the centrifugal oil filter assembly doing it that way
give craig a call at parts and they'll post it i'm sure.
(no connection to the business just a happy customer with the quality of their work, but you get what you pay for and certainly pay for what you get.):o:)
