I have a 98 and on left hand lock I get what is like a rubbing noise, forward and reverse. Have checked in the wheel arches etc for signs of rubbing, nothing. Have done the VCU test in reverse and there is a little resistance but not what I would call feeling like the brakes are on. Any ideas??

Generally a knocking noise on full lock are the CV's. I'm not familiar with Freelanders though.

Check your rear diff mounts. When they go sloppy or break the yoke on the pinion can rub on the floor pan.

May sound stupid but what is the best way to check them? If I get underneath will it be obvious if they are sloppy or broken? Do I need to lift the wheels off the ground? Are they easy to replace? Sorry about all the questions.

Do I need to remove propshaft to do the diff mounts?
Just thought I would add that I dont get any rubbing noise when on right lock.

Just get underneath and push the diff upwards near each mount. you will see if the mounts are broken. Also check the floor pan above where the prop shaft blots to the diff, this is where they rub.
No you dont need to remove the prop shaft but you do need to undo all the mounts to get them all in.

And can be a pain in the bum to do - I did mine last year and am glad I will not have to do it again.

I have changed the diff mounts, not too bad a job as I changed all 3. The ones I took off looked ok but have changed them all anyway, but still have this rubbing/dragging sound on full left lock, into parking spaces etc. It sounds as though the wheel is rubbing the wheel arch and coming from the front. I have done the "tipex" test on the propshafts and the marks didnt line up after driving around for a bit, turning left and right. Also done the rear wheel off the ground, 1st gear, handbrake off test and the wheel turns. I only have a 6" bar and I can turn the wheel with it using a socket on the hub nut, so am guessing the vcu is ok? My next plan of action is to drop the propshaft off and see if that makes any differance. Any other thoughts on what is causing this rubbing/dragging?

If you think its coming from the front, check the backing plate on the brakes

It sounds more like the tyre rubbing in the wheel arch than a metalic sound but I will check them. I havent dropped the prop off yet, but was chatting to a guy over the weekend and he said he had a similar problem, not with a landy, and that turned out to be the steering rack being out of line and over steering one way. Is there any way I can check the racks movement without taking it in to have alignment checked? Would an alignment check show a fault?

The Freelander steering rack will not be an issue - what size wheels and tyres do you have - sounds like rubbing in the wheel arch somewhere etc
When you disconnect one of the tailshafts jack the front up the front of the car off the ground and start it up in gear and turn the steering wheel from side to side and listen for the sound.

I have the standard alloys with 215/65/16 tyres on, it does sound like its rubbing only when doing tight left turns, parking etc, but cant seam to find where?? I will try the above method, once I get round to removing the propshaft!!

Oh course if you can lift the entire car off the ground you will not have to remove the propshaft - will then give you the opportunity to find the noise even if it is in the rear.

Managed to get round to removing the propshaft. What a difference it has made!! The noise when turning has gone and also a few other clunks a have vanished. Only drove a short distance but all seams ok and drives nice enough. I dont do any off road driving so think I will probably leave it like this, in 2wd, until I move it on then I will refit the prop.

Did you remove both driveshafts?? In theory if not, the VCU will detect drive at one end (either from the gearbox or the rear axle) and not the other and will lock. That would be the theory but not sure if it is fact in real life.
I would remove both to be sure. I drove my Freelander around for some time in front wheel drive only and it felt a bit more sporty but with all the power just going to the front TC was on a bit more but was not an issue.

Yea removed the whole lot from the gearbox to the diff, shafts and vcu in one go. I am going to drive it like this now until I trade it in. TC wont be an issue as the bulb had been removed before I had it, also abs and hdc warning bulbs, have not replaced them. Not sure if I have said before but this is our 2nd car and only a cheap , well bought cheap, runaround for me so dont want to spend too much on it. I do like it though and it is a nice drive.
Thanks for your help and advise garry and also woko if your reading this. :BigThumb:
