Noise on left hand lock

I have a 98 and on left hand lock I get what is like a rubbing noise, forward and reverse. Have checked in the wheel arches etc for signs of rubbing, nothing. Have done the VCU test in reverse and there is a little resistance but not what I would call feeling like the brakes are on. Any ideas??

Generally a knocking noise on full lock are the CV's. I'm not familiar with Freelanders though.

Check your rear diff mounts. When they go sloppy or break the yoke on the pinion can rub on the floor pan.

May sound stupid but what is the best way to check them? If I get underneath will it be obvious if they are sloppy or broken? Do I need to lift the wheels off the ground? Are they easy to replace? Sorry about all the questions.

Do I need to remove propshaft to do the diff mounts?
Just thought I would add that I dont get any rubbing noise when on right lock.

Just get underneath and push the diff upwards near each mount. you will see if the mounts are broken. Also check the floor pan above where the prop shaft blots to the diff, this is where they rub.
No you dont need to remove the prop shaft but you do need to undo all the mounts to get them all in.

And can be a pain in the bum to do - I did mine last year and am glad I will not have to do it again.

I have changed the diff mounts, not too bad a job as I changed all 3. The ones I took off looked ok but have changed them all anyway, but still have this rubbing/dragging sound on full left lock, into parking spaces etc. It sounds as though the wheel is rubbing the wheel arch and coming from the front. I have done the "tipex" test on the propshafts and the marks didnt line up after driving around for a bit, turning left and right. Also done the rear wheel off the ground, 1st gear, handbrake off test and the wheel turns. I only have a 6" bar and I can turn the wheel with it using a socket on the hub nut, so am guessing the vcu is ok? My next plan of action is to drop the propshaft off and see if that makes any differance. Any other thoughts on what is causing this rubbing/dragging?

It sounds more like the tyre rubbing in the wheel arch than a metalic sound but I will check them. I havent dropped the prop off yet, but was chatting to a guy over the weekend and he said he had a similar problem, not with a landy, and that turned out to be the steering rack being out of line and over steering one way. Is there any way I can check the racks movement without taking it in to have alignment checked? Would an alignment check show a fault?
