I watched Red Dog last night, and must say it's one of the best Austrailian movies I have seen for quite some time. It's one of those that make you laugh and cry, highly recommended.

Did you happen to catch "wake in fright" the other night?

I enjoyed "Red Dog" a few months ago. Parts of the first ten minutes or so didn't seem all that promising, but from then on it was quite clever. I especially enjoyed it because I saw it in the cinema at Sawtell, the one that was built when I was growing up there in the 1950s.
I watched 'Wake in Fright" again. I saw it in a cinema when it was first released and then again a few years later on TV. I have always thought that it was one of the best examples of a film utterly ruined by being shown on commercial TV. That slow descent the central character undergoes is nowhere near as effective when it is interrupted at regular intervals by messages about what brand of toothpaste or washing powder we should be using.
Thankfully this time it was uninterrupted so we were subjected to the full impact of the hero's downward spiral.

I've watched it three times now and totally agree with you, for a movie on a budget, it's "five stars" from me :) The documentary on the dvd is very interesting too.

I saw Red Dog when it first appeared. I do not watch many movies, but I certainly thought this was worth watching. One quibble though - one scene is supposed to take place in 1970, when the dog is picked up on the road by a couple - travelling in a Series 3.

Could be true. I had a mate with an H reg Series III. H registration was from 1 August 1969 – 31 July 1970. However, this was in the UK, not sure what year they arrived over here.

Don't quibble about minor things like the 3 train ore sets that weren't around in the early days - a great movie to make us proud - and some nostalgia for those who where there "then".

The best movie I have seen in ages. A few inconsistencies as pointed out, but nothing to bad. Some of the Caterpillar equipment shown was not around in the 1970s in the guise shown, series 3 maybe a bit early. Multiple train sets, were not around and wrong model trains, though they did paint them up in original paint.
Good thing though is it is a good aussie yarn based part on fact and part myth.
One guy I was talking too reckons he picked up Red Dog near Newman in the mid 70s and dropped him at Newman. Who knows if he was speaking the truth.
I think the warship travel to Japan and back was a bit hard to swallow.

I saw an ad on Foxtel for it - on the Pay for Movies part of Foxtel - the first thing that I noticed was the Land Rover - so I went online and purchased it as a download for my iPad - and looked around and purchased a couple of others with Land Rovers in them. The Aussie Bride wanted to watch it, too, so I purchased a 'dongle' to connect the iPad to the big screen and we all watched it.
Turned out to be an expensive movie but I enjoyed it.

Great movie, but the only real (being picky) fault is the Landy is wrong period.

Possibly not, but that might just mean that you went into the movie expecting something different.
In the same way that we don't criticise Westerns for being unrealistic because the hero never gets his hat knocked off in the saloon fight and because everyone seems to be able to fire twenty or thirty shots from a six shot revolver, I don't think you would be disappointed if you were prepared to accept this film for what is was.
if you view it as a light hearted yarn, that developed into the sort of far fetched tall story for which Australians used to be famous, then you would probably think it did a good job of what it set out to do.
What were you expecting?

I had the same problem with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Went and saw it, being a science fiction tragic. Hated it. Then everyone was talking about how great it was. Girlfriend (it was long ago) wanted to see it - took her, thinking I might have missed something the first time, it was still crap. Years later out comes 'the directors cut'. 12 extra minutes that explain the who thing and transforms the movie. Went again.....it was still crap. I paid to see that stupid move three times to come to the inescapable conclusion that it was crap....and people still tell me its their favourite movie of all time.

The bit about the dog jumping on ships and traveling to Japan and back seemed a bit far fetched, After all there is customs and quarantine. You just can't jump on and off as you please.

I agree with you about that one. I thought it was rubbish. At least I had the good sense to see it just once. :D:D:D

Perhaps you are too young to have been brought up on some of the great Aussie tall stories that were popular around the middle of last century. :)
The really clever ones started of being quite credible and they gradually became more outlandish, but you could never quite put your finger on the point where the story progressed from quite believable, through a bit unlikely, then a bit hard to swallow, to quite obviously impossible.
Bill Bryson used a similar technique in some of his writing. When he was describing Australia'a venomous snakes and spiders, the first few in the list were real. the next few sounded familiar, the next sounded a bit unlikely and the last ones were quite obviously made up. However, it wasn't obvious where the change took place.
"Red Dog" is a bit like that. Unless you are prepared to let yourself be taken along for the ride, it probably all seems a bit silly.

I spoke to someone who lived in Karratha at the time that the movie was set in, and she knew the red dog.
She told me it was nothing like the movie and was a snappy unfriendly bugger that nobody liked.
But hey why ruin a good story, like Rabbit Proof Fence was apparently BS and the WA protector was nothing like portrayed , so much so that his son AFAIR was talking about suing the producers.
AND Ita Buttrose's husband did NOT abandon her with a baby, he left 3 years later and recently received a settlement from the producer.Of course Ita came out last week and said I tried to tell them.
Movies that pretend to deliver fact rarely do.

Same goes for Slumdog Millionaire.
