Hi all I'm a newbie so pls be gentle. I recently bought a P38 and the keypad doesn't work and yes tried to replace the batteries but no go. I have tried Range Rover in melb but they said they can't get them as cars too old. Does anyone have any ideas.

Does the red light come on when you push the buttons?

Also check the resync procedure.

Have a read here: newrremedies (http://www.rangerovers.net/newrremedies.html#alarm)

and here: Security and Alarm System Operation & Diagnosis on Range Rover 4.0/4.6/P38A (http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/becm/alarm.html)

Hi Judi, nice to see you found the site, there is a wealth of info here and you will also come across "rangerover.net I think it is. I have also found Paul P38a very good to deal with, he is in Canberra and runs a part time business called Hard Range.com.

Find yourself an independent garage that knows Range Rovers. You will find that most of the dealers are referred to as stealers.

As to you key problem, pop the rubber push bit of the keypad and see if the little buttons are centred over the push controls or not. If not just push them back into position.

From memory, try putting the key into the ignition, then press the keyfob buttons, that should get it working again for you, provided the battery is ok.

Welcome. Be sure to post more details about your car, like model year etc, as key fob sync method is different for later models.

Some years ago, mine stopped working. A switch had broken loose from the printed circuit board so I opened the fob up and resoldered it.

Do you mean the light on the fob or dash, pretty sure alarm is working cos it flashes but no the light doesn't come on the fob

JimHi Jim

Have removed the cover over the battery and there is no metal contact should there be one?

Hi Judi, Jim is referring to the little metal buttons under the push button rubber pad on the top side. you can just prise off the rubber pad and you will see that there are or should be a round metal button in the middle of each of the two holes of the plastic. If they are off centre you can try to centre them again although whilst this will get it going you will have recurring problems as if the little metal buttons have moved the solder is broken and they need to be fixed (see Ron's photos below)
