Hi All , dont know if this has been covered but can anyone tell me the max tire width that will fit on the 110 without rubbing or messing with the steering lock , I have a set 0f 265/75R-16 Micky Thompsons ATZ 's in the shead . will they work ok ?

A search will show up a few relevant threads like this one http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/24324-defender-tyre-sizes.html

"Tires" don't fit in Australia but "tyres" do

265-75-16s will fit fine on Defender alloys...

And just a friendly hint...

We're in Oz mate... They're Tyres

After all, your 'fender isn't made of "AL-Oooooh-Min-Um"

Potatos or Potatoes, I’m only interested if they fit not a grammar lesson, but thanks anyway.
So I guess there shouldn’t be any problems with the rolling diameter being that the 235/75r16 are aprox 747mm OD & 265/75r 16 are aprox 808mm OD they should still fit in the guard. I’m also guessing that the Speedo will be out at the same time, can it be fixed via the ECU like other 4X4 brands.
Im also guessing it will labour a little being a bigger diamiter .

Spelling lesson actually :) Your grammar is quite good

Firstly, the rolling diameter difference is negligible...
You have your sizings wrong ;)
235-85-16 is 806mm
265-75-16 is 804mm

Secondly, the speedo is already out! A 255-85-16 sorts it

And no it wont labour... But is likely to use a little more fuel as wider tyres= more drag...

And most vehicle brands ??? and Speedo adjustable calibration via ECU. Not many.....

If you know so much about all these other vehicles, how can it be you know so little about this one :p

Ok your right just noticd the "tyres" ;) are 85's, so shouldn't be a pronlem there .

As for the ECU my F250 being an 05 model and cruiser both have been calibrated via thr ECU , just asuming that most are done in the same way. But thanks for your help , Its like a big jigsaw coming together .

No problems...

Keep in mind, the most reliable package will be the most standard as well..

TDCi engined Defenders need a few extra changes to do a 40-50mm lift..

P38 style rear diffs arent the strongest, so if you increase power / rolling diameter of tyres or work hard they can fail...

Good luck...

Ok so today I went to grab the set of tyres from the rack and noticed they are actually 285/75R-16 am I pushing my luck? Will they fit under the guards or will they rub on articulation.

You may get some rubbing at full lock and on the rear spring towers..

Just note that 285's on 7" rims isnt "technically" a legal fitment...

There is a lot to be said for 235-85-16 (stock size) for performance and economy benefits...

Yeah it’s not legal, but what normally is when we start modding, I have them sitting there just thought I may as well use them when the Defender is ready. I guess I’ll just chuck them on flea bay.

On another note regarding a 2” lift is there anything else that needs doing, e.g.: brake lines, control arms, panhard rod length?

You know Dockstrada, for a bloke who owns several cars and had motorbikes it sounds like you did 0 homework on a defender before you bought it.

The AULRO search facility can be tricky but works well if you persist. If that is no good try google.

But to answer your idea in short on lifting a tdci 40 to 50mm, you will need a front double cardan prop shaft. Tom Wood's are the go, or try a wide angle from Les Richmond, or something from Gwen Lewis. You will need to extend the brake lines the same amount as the lift to be safe.
255/85 will rub on the control arms slightly with 0 offset rims. Alloy rims ? offset wont rub but may hang outside the guards a little bit.

Perhaps go get it dirty first before blinging it up, you may have to do nothing in the end.

I've got a set of 255/86-16 BFG Muddies for the Defender and whilst they give a good 1" lift and are great off road they don't 'feel' as good as the 235/85-16 AT's. The smaller tyres feel a better match for the mighty 300 Tdi. :) They also rub on full lock which is a nuisance, makes a hell of a racket and feels pretty bad, especially in reverse. I'll probably replace them with 235/85 muddys.

I've got 255/85/R16s KM2S on my td5 but they definately don't rub at the front end.
I've been told I need offset rims as apparently they will rub on rear spring supports (don't know what they are actually called) but they haven't yet.

I'm not gonna bother.
I love the tyres, fantastic grip and I find them fine on the road.
Running 40psi as advised by tyre dealer and it's a great ride.

I really like the extra little bit of clearance and footprint the 255/85 garners you, and with a few tweaks of the pump the 300Tdi pulls them fine, and IMO highway gearing is improved.

The reduced turning circle does suck, particularly with a 130.

Oh, and the speedo correction is a bonus :D

While on the subject of tyres for the Defender I thought it worth mentioning about the amount of mud and crap that gets thrown up the side of the vehicle (and all over your arm) from the fronts if you go for a wider tyre and leave the factory eyebrows.
And I have front mudflaps fitted!

I changed to 265/75/16's a few years ago and really noticed the difference between the factory 235/85's.
285/75/16 would I imagine be even worse.

So if you like playing in the dirt and mud with your deefer (and you should:D) I would suggest up sizing your eyebrows or staying with 235's.

I am going back to 235/85's and FWIW I am going to try the TOYO m55's
but that's another story.
I do like the idea of 255/85 but as has been said before availability is still an issue:(. Especially in an A/T

Cheers,
Paul.

That sounds like a very good price.

The cheapest BFG dealer I know of in Sydney (sort of ) is Tyres Cheap at Sth Windsor.
He usually can't be beaten.

G'day Gang,
I have a ex Telstra Defender 130 and want to put taller tires on. Can anyone tell me what the maximum tire size that can be fitted to the standard landy rim on a vehicle without a lift kit. She is a work vehicle and doesn't do any extreme off road work.

Cheers

A Mate just replaced his Federal Contenentals. He got just over 100k on them, very happy for a muddy. He got another set and recommends them. Not sure of $$$$. He did say they wernt cheap.

I fitted 265/75 R16 Cooper ST Max to my 99 Defender and there was about 10mm clearance between the tyre and spring mount. All ok at first but they rubbed (quite badly) off road once I started the articulate the rear axle. I sorted the problem by fitting paddocks wheel spacers. This also improved the poor turning circle and widened the track making a noticeable difference the overall stability of the vehicle.
My might be a bit different as its older. But 265's do look good!

Cheers

Nino.

Depends on what rims you have, but it'll probably be 255/85/16 on a 130.

Here's a set of 285/75 they are on 16x7 rims not sure of the off set but they miss everything on factory springs and don't stick out past the flares but they do make the car dirtier

I think Im a little late here... but have 285/75/16 on the puma. I run them on -6 16x8 wheels, they just fit under the flares and no rubbing anywhere. I doubt you would have the inside clearance required on stock rims.
