Can you imagine the average punter trying to reverse that, Digger?

It's that without a steerable front axle at times. ;)

I do admit I find a semi easy to do but sometimes embarrass myself with a "tinky trailer" :D

I have a very small box trailer that's prone to embarrass me, it can't be seen behind a 4x4 until it's too late. :oops2:

At Nissan casting in Dandenong they have a tow vehicle ( same as the airport ones that tow stuff around ) that towed a large 20 ton capacity special built trailer that was front steer. Was a interesting time learning to back that around corners, down narrow passages etc.

Hi All
At least it has the lockout setup so you can make it ridgid if you have too - yes i have been embarrassed by an army trailer. I can back two dogs around a corner but couldnt back that thing :)

That Trailer was build and owned by a guy in Briagolong Victoria about 30 years ago. He used it for dragging around his Tractor Pull Tractor.
I bought the trailer from him to drag a Hill climb car around for about $1500 if memory serves me correct.
I then sold it a guy in Melbourne. That was in about 1984. Originally it was green.
It had no suspension on the stub axles and bounced like crazy empty. Once loaded it wasn't to bad.
Reversing it was a real drama you could lock the front in with a pin but it still was still a major effort. Without the pin it was easier to be honest.
Interesting how after all these years it pops up on ebay.

I'm impressed, I'll put two anywhere and can back three in a straight line. Any one who can back three round a corner demands my respect.
Can you imagine the stresses that skull dragging (pushing) that around would put on the tow and draw bar, not to mention tyres and bearings. :o

Long time since I have seen one of those. I had a good yarn to a bloke in the paddock at Warwick Farm motor races who had one. He was wrapped in it. Reckoned it towed as straight as a gun barrel and tracked almost exactly in the path of the tug. He said the front axle had true Ackerman steering geometry and didn't scrub tyres. Don't recall asking about reversing it though.

Like trying to screw a wide spread into a dock from a narrow street.
Ever try a Scammell Mechanical Horse and the short quick release trailers that went with them? AGM (the glass works) in Sydney had a fleet of them. A source of some amusement for the workers was to challenge any line haul truckie who thought he was good at reversing to try one. In the blink of an eye the trailer would be around trying to molest the windscreen wipers.

I agree definately easier backing a semi. I used to drive a semi fuel tanker but now drive a truck and dog and is very different to a semi to back.
Check out this guy on youtube, skip to 2mins 10sec backing a triple around a corner. Definately impressed and earned my respect and admiration. If I had a trucking business I'd offer him a job

brilliant idea, love it!
yep i have backed dog trailers for a number of years, it is embarrassing when an old timer comes up to you and says that he has been driving for 40years and couldnt do what i was doing at the age of 24:p

never been involved with the big stuff with trailers only car trailer size. I am, however a firm believer in the theory that if you can NOT back, DON'T tow it.

When the Army went away from the Freighter and Brentwood Recovery Tilt Bed trailers and we ended up with the Dog Trailers we couldn't be licensed to tow them unless we could back them around a corner in a suburban street.
Sure came in handy that skill.

I'm not knocking the guy but, that wasn't a triple in the true sense. Two A trailers and a B only have three articulation points, the same as a double road train. A triple road train has five articulation points, totally different ball game.

I never got to back a widespread on level ground, the pivoting axle keeps changing on uneven surfaces.
My Father-in-law drove a three wheel Scammell for some time. He said they were so manoeuvrablethat he could sneak the wrong way in a one way street and perform a U-turn before anybody knew what he was up to. He also said you had to be constantly on your toes, more than one driver was killed as the trailer jack-knifed and sliced the top half off cab and driver.

ID buy that trailer in a heart beat if it was nearer to here or I could cheaply get it here.
youd very quickly see it fitted out with a portable 2 poster and a tool rack up over the front axle.

spoke to the guy selling it...
rego has it at 480kg tare and it looks like a 2t gvm giving an effective 1.5T payload, so pretty much useless for what I wanted it for :(
