Wiring up an Engine Saver

Hi,
I have installed an Engine Saver, sort off.

I have pulled all the wiring though the firewall and plugged all the bits of the Engine Saver together. The only part left is to connect the red wire to a power source that is activated by the ignition and the red&black wire to a reliable earth. The only problem is that I do not know what that means. :confused::confused:

Nuts and bolts I can do, wires scare me. :eek:

My fuse pannel under the steering wheel is full or so no chance of using the relay pins utilised by another forum member. I do have a 6 pin pug under there that is not used for anything. (imageshack not working for me at the moment) How can I tell if I can use some of the connectors in the plug?

Please be gentile I'm not smart with wires. :angel:

I found a suitably live wire (can't remember which one exactly) at the back of the ignition switch, by using a multimeter.
Then I stripped a short section of the insulation from the wire.
Then I soldered another short piece of wire onto that exposed bit of bare wire where I'd stripped off the insulation. This short wire has an insulated female knife connector crimped onto the other end.
I insulated the soldering by threading on a piece of heat shrink.
your red wire plugs into that female knife connector, but I think you have to add a suitable fuse to the line.(see the instructions, I can't remember the value).

Someone else may come up with a better Idea. I'm no expert.

in the Td5 d2, bottom left of underdash fuse box there is an unused relay socket, has 5 pins from memory. one of them is live at ignition on, use a multimeter or test lamp to check which one as i can't remember. i use this as my ignition source for low coolant alarms.

Jaycar electronics sell a blade fuse that has a wire attached for painless jumping of accessories from your fuse block. Remember to order a fuse slightly higher rated than the one you are going to replace and to order a few so you have spares for testing and emergencies.

Oh yeah nearly forgot NEVER add stuff to ABS or airbag circuits.

Good on you for having a go! Not quite the way I would have done it but if it works...

I would get a ring crimp connector for that earth as wire under a screw like that can make its way loose. Your alarm won't work then... Also, did you check this blades on the right of the fuse block for 12v supply when the ignition is on? This is where I got my power from..just put a blade connector on and plugged it in.

Thanks for the tip about the wire under the screw, I have some ring crimp connectors and will put one on today.

I went with the jump wire as it reduced the risk of me taking power from something that would confuse one of the computers. I do not know if it is possible for that to happen but I didn't want to take the risk.
