View Full Version : Insurance for Discovery 1?

Hi All,

I was hoping someone may be able to recommend an insurer. Having had a child, we've just bought a 4-door Discovery 1 to replace our old 2-door.

We were with GIO, and my wife called them today to arrange insurance for the new Landie. They wouldn't go higher than $5,500, despite the fact that we paid $8,500 for her from a dealer. (Very very tidy - 180,000km, one owner, service history, gearbox and clutch reconditioned, etc. etc., well worth the price).

Can someone recommend an insurer that will actually cover our car for its purchase price?

Yours,
Duncan

GIO don't want your business - try NRMA :)

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I'm in Victoria which would make it RACV for me, but there's no way I'm giving them money due to their position on motorcycling:

I've got my D1 insured with Shannons for agreed value of $9500. More for the add-ons than the actual vehicle!! Policy was about $500 from memory.

Ours is in for $7500 with AAMI but its an ES with options and extras so that gets the total up. Does yours have any extras? If so, estimate the cost and try adding them to your policy and see if they will bump up the total. Otherwise, old Discos aren't worth so much nowdays...:(

I'm the same as Spudboy. Went with Shannons. Agreed value of $10,000 for my '95 D1 V8. I also have the wifes Focus TDCI with them for a high agreed value, and they were cheaper than AAMI.

Shannons do seem to be getting a lot of business - and they are trying to get it as well. A bit different to the majoe insurers who act like they're doing you a favour...

You should also read the fine print to see where they actually cover you. Are you covered if you go off marked roads on maps? If yoiu catch fire on some obscure desert track are you covered? If you drown it crossing a river will they say you exceeded the manufacturers recommended wading capability of the vehicle? And does the policy only cover modifications/accessories actually listed on the policy? Sorry to be paranoid, but insurance isn't always insurance, if you know what I mean.

Does any insurer cover that? Surely not...

I think some will cover it if it doesn't exceed the manufacturer's recommended wading depth, but the problem is suspension lifts and tyres alter the depth that people attempt to wade and go over the recommended depth.

I asked Shannons about that, and the bloke said if it is a public road or you are on private property and you have permission to be there you are covered, doesn't matter where it is in Australia.

Didn't ask about wading too deep .......

97 TDI Insured with AAMI for agreed value $7,450
Premium $345
Excess $ standard $625
Excess flexi-premium $1550

Was always insured with NRMA before but the premium went up to $900 for an agreed value of $5500. When I rang for a please explain, they said its because its an old model and they would have trouble getting parts if damaged in an accident

I've heard that 'trouble getting parts' excuse before and its rubbish. LR parts are readily available. If they're not already in the country its only a week to get them sent in. Don't most replacement car panels for many makes actually come from the same factory in Korea anyway? Sure I read that somewhere.

I received a call from Youi wanting to give me a quote on my '95 Disco. I allowed it, and they gave me the quote, to which I asked what today's "market value" is for my vehicle, as that's the only reference to the value of the vehicle in the policy.

Response was:

A market value is determined at the time of a claim, and we work it out by basically looking at how much you would be able to
Sell your car for if you sold it privately. So at the time of a claim we take into account things like the make, model, condition and
Kilometres travelled to determine how much it would cost to replace your car to put you back in the same position you were in
Prior to the claim.

Not sure how I feel about a policy where they can't tell me how much I'm insured for??? Is that normal? I've asked for agreed value options as well.

I'd prefer agreed value and they can reassess it each year at renewal time, personally.
